While a T1 thread is a little slower than an Itanium thread, I would hardly say that it's a chicken compared to an ox. But to go with this, the T1 runs at 1 Ghz while the latest Intel chips run between 3 and 4 gHz. I know you cannot extrapolate performance directly from frequency, but it does give some idea of how fast these threads run. So, say your Intel chip is about 4 times faster. Since there are only two threads running, your performance is 2 X 4 = 8 generic performance units. For the UltraSparc, you've got 32 threads running at 1 generic performance units. That means 32 generic performance units. So, you get WAY more throughput and use less power as you've pointed out. Now, some people have argued that it's better to have a single (or a few) blazing fast cores. Sun has taken the view that it's better to have a LOT of somewhat fast cores. Since these high-end chips are mostly used for servers that handle many many users, it's clearly better to have many somewhat fast cores that use less power and on a performance basis are MUCH cheaper.
Last time I checked hyperthreading wasn't enabled on the Intel dual core chips. Even if it is enabled on the latest Intel chip, that is only 4 threads total. That's nowhere near the 32 threads in the UltraSparc T1. Sun's next generation is Rock which will have 64 threads in a single chip! By the time Intel gets to 8 threads per chip, Sun will be at 64.
but most of the time I honestly don't have the energy to pound the pavement 24/7
Take one of your vacation days, apply to 100 jobs online that you're qualified for. You will probably get about 10 responses which will lead to about 3 interviews. You will then get 1 or 2 offers that you are interested in accepting. If this doesn't work, try again. If you're out of vacation days, take unpaid leave if necessary. Having the right job should be a priority worth the investment.
I was just kidding man. It would be funny though right? I mean instead of having all that bad info about communism, they would be directing to your site with the picture of you and Mao living the good life at bars.
Well, I don't like patent abuse which this clearly seems to be, but I've always hated when they make a button to do smiley faces anyways. How hard is it to type:)? MSN and Yahoo have these 'emotions' to make many different faces, but it's just pointless to me. I like making my own:/.
That the U.N. would support a socialist program for handing out laptops that were designed by a university professor. I'm not saying that the proponents of this idea do not have their hearts in the right place, but lets be honest, it is what it is. Maybe this time it will work. I hope the program is successful, I'm just a little skeptical about these kind of largescale government sponsored give aways. This was tried in the Soviet Union for years and years. What happens? Well, the average Soviet spent more than 2 hours a day waiting in line to get their food, car, soap, vodka, etc. Imagine that everything in your country was as innefficient as the dmv (department of motor vehicles). This is socialism. Again, hopefully these laptops make a great impact, but I will believe it when I see it.
I always like the speculation that there could be life on gas giants. Bird type things at higher altitudes
Now that would have to be a powerful bird. It could never land so it would have to constantly fly. Also, it would have to be able to stay afloat with the gravitational forces of a gas giant! It had better have some powerful wing muscles. I'm not saying this is not possible. It's an interesting idea, but I'd hate to have one of those get loose on earth.
well, you generally don't find complex life at temperatures where water and most (all?) hydrocarbons freeze, do you?
It's true that we don't have complex life at temperatures where water and hydrocarbons freeze on earth, but I wouldn't assume that's proof we will not in another environment. It's possible that life evolved differently on earth than it did on other planets (if it did at all). Also, as one person pointed out there could be warmer temperatures below the surface of the ice layer. This is what happened on Europa. Who knows maybe we'll find a sea of life below the surface? That could include things at least as advanced as fish. Maybe smarter? I don't think there's any reason that a sea dwelling animal couldn't evolve a brain more advanced than our sea-faring friends?
I agree with the people who said that basically a billion sounds cool. I suppose you could use a million, but that would not be as cool as a billion. A billion is the new million. A company that is as media savy as Google is understands this.
Most employers believe it is a good investment to train their employees. If you work at one that doesn't agree, you might want to apply for some other jobs. Try to beg them to get you certified before you leave though:). Also, try to get into a company that uses *nix. I think you'll see that most companies that use *nix have more foresight than companies that use Microsoft. That has been my experience at least.
Your assumption is that these guys 'work'. I don't think they work in the same way you or I 'work'. Imagine if 'work' meant having a bunch of people suck up to you and do whatever you ask every day. Would that be worth doing even if you don't technically have to?
Ok, I'll give you that. That's why I said maybe you need a log file in my original post. Still I see no need to track the name of the voter with this. You just call the voter: voter 1, voter 2,... I suppose you will nring up the fact that there's a need to make sure voters only vote once, then all you need to do is track in a separate database the names of the users who have voted. So, after I go in and vote, if I try again, they'll see that Chris Gilliard has already voted. Maybe we can even track it based on Social security number but this should be separate from the place where they say, "Joe has 1000 votes"
Sure an education system may if it's good make a mediocre person better but it wont make a retard smart or if it's bad, a genius dumb.
I have to disagree with you on this. There was just a thread on geniuses don't grow in a vaccum. It's very important that we have a good education system. Imagine if we had _NO_ education system whatsoever. We would be a lot like some of the poorer nations in Africa. How many geniuses do you know from Ethiopia? See my point?
How do you protect the anonymity of the voters? No one should be able to figure out who someone voted for, and voters shouldn't be able to prove to someone else who they voted for so as to prevent selling of votes.
Still simple. Just don't include the name of the voter. There's no reason to have it in the data anyways. It's seriously just a list of candidates with the number of votes for each.
Interesting post. If I had the ability to moderate, I would give you +1. I just want to comment on one thing you said, "More importantly, it's not a question of whether we give artificial minds human rights. It's a not even a question of whether they will take it, the question is whether they will give it to us. Once (or if) we have a human-level AI, it should be able to improve upon itself, and/or it successors, leading to increasingly powerful AIs, and eventually, the Singularity. The AIs will be in power."
I have a theory that we have already have advanced AI in a way. If you look at modern civilization, you can think of it as a superorganism for sure. It can do so many things that none of us can do alone: Go to the moon, send messages around the world instantly, build huge structures. None of us could have even a glimmer of hope of being able to do these things with out the aid of the superorganism we call society. So, when it comes right down to it AI (our technological society) IS in power already. Think about if you try to steal from the bank. You probably won't get too far because there are cameras in the bank that see you and eventually they will tell a police officer to make a visit to your house and arrest you. Some people have argued that we will be no more than pets to our AI in the future, but aren't we there now? I mean if you have an ambivolent owner as a pet, you pretty much get to do what you want as long as you don't destroy property or otherwise disturb the peace. Hmmm, this sounds like society to me. We don't even need super advanced AI to extend this trend. When the day comes that cameras cost about $0 and computing power to do face recognition is cheap, we will have cameras everywhere constantly looking to see if anyone does anything wrong. As long as we have good government, this will be a good thing because petty crimes will just not ever happen. Cyber crimes will really be the only form of crime that's not completly detectable. So, are we pretty much pets right now? YES! We're pets of society and we have typical rights given to pets. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a bad thing because I think society is pretty good. This also means I'm not scared of a Singularity because I think we're already living by the rules of our societal superorganism and technological advances will just make it harder to commit crimes but I do not believe that it will take away our rights to live freely. In fact technology has given us more freedoms throughout the years. Yeah, 500 years ago, it was probably a little easier to rob a bank, but many people were slaves back then as well. Now we have little use for slaves because the free market sets prices correctly so that we have an endless supply of cleaners, miners, and cotton pickers. Many of the really crappy jobs are not needed because we've figured out ways to do them with machinery. So, I say bring on the Singularity, it will only give us more freedoms in the areas that are important to us.

Itanium has been taking share from both IBM power and Sun Sparc.
True but can they compete with the UltraSparc T1 (which has 32 threads compared to Intel Itanium's 2 threads)?

...in China they redirect the Wikipedia entry for communism to this guy's site.

Oooo...sexy alien mermaid babes on a planet 20,000 light years away. It has Academy Awards written all over it!

Don't kid yourself. This has nothing to do with being evil or not and everything to do with making money. Great big piles of money.
Yeah, but since we found out he's only making $1, it's not so bad right? A man's gotta eat.

Sounds like Europa. Maybe there's all sorts of little fishies swiming below the surface in the warm sea below?

Notice that I said, "(note: tongue planted firmly in cheek)". That means I was being sarchastic. I totally agree with you actually. :)
Or just use Firefox!
Yeah right. And if you believe this, you probably think capitalism is a good thing too! Give me a break. (note: tongue planted firmly in cheak)
According to yahoo finance:

Eric Schmidt gets $82,000 and Sergey Brin and Larry Page get $45,000.

Hey man, not sure about your comment, but your wife's sketches are really good!
