Why should RMS run the free software/open source movement? Maybe he helped it in the past, but now he's just a zealot. If he left completely, I think it would make things a lot nicer for users (Remember them? They're the people who have lives outside of computers and Slashdot, unlike us:)).
Oh come on! Most people, myself couldn't care less whether they use open-source drivers or closed-source "binary blobs". Don't get me wrong, I like open source software, but it's not some grand ideal for me. I use both Windows and Linux, because they both have pros and cons, and because, being a geek, I like messing with computers. People should use whatever software works best for them.
(Yeah, I know the RMS fanboys are going to mod me down for this.)
The ODP isn't a search engine, per se. It's a volunteer-edited web directory with a search feature. In my experience, it has some good listings, but can be somewhat out of date. I guess that's the cost of a directory vs a crawler.
I don't care if people snoop on my while I'm reading Slashdot. I just want to keep wardrivers/hackers off my LAN so that can't access say, my fileserver.
But seriously, if you provide root access to the system, what good is a Perl obfuscator/encryptor/compiler going to do? Nothing can really stop someone with a will and enough free time from decrypting the code.
Well, some ad services do pay per click. Others pay per download instead. Downloading and hiding ads helps sites that use the second kind of service.

It should be "most people, myself included".

Amen! I really wish I had some mod points for you.
I guess you've never read HTML. :) There is no html:// URI scheme. You're thinking of http:///
recursion: n.
See recursion. See also tail recursion.
From the Jargon File.
Imagine a Beowulf cluster of Soviet malware detecting YOU!
It looks like we just killed the server. MirrorDot has a copy.
Now with 100% more ads!

Do you even know what WPA is?
He has a valid point.
Spell checking? What do you the this is, Hogwarts?
Oh the irony!
TF is was talking about is this.
Why does everybody get this wrong? It was armed dolphins, not armed sharks. (Google it, I'm too lazy to find the link right now.)
LOL. Nice story, AC.
Nobody can read it anyway!

No, I'd rather play Global Thermonuclear War.
Mod parent up.
AFAIK, updating has usually been under the help menu. For instance, take a look at iTunes and Adobe.
You forgot Poland!
