Apple does not sell OS X without accompanying hardware. You can grab an OS X upgrade disc for a nominal fee, but it is just that, an upgrade version.

Most Apple users believe they are somehow better than everyone else and that they are somehow elite because they own an Apple product.

Try talking to an actual Apple user. I know dozens of them and not a single one fits your silly description. The fanbois you talk about hang around on macdailynews, not on slashdot. They are a small minority and give people like me, who actually like using a mac better than windows or linux, a bad name.

They allowed the dogs to follow their preference - seems 90% chose sniffing out drugs over explosives.

  8. Re:Speech-to-text on Futurama Voices Could Be Recast · · Score: 1

Won't work. The way words are pronounced depends on the surrounding words. Also, words are not seperate soundbites but a continuous stream of sound. It is not possible to cut one word out of a sentence and keep it distinguishable. Written language suggests words are seperate entities, but looking at a graphical display of sound there is no way to count the words in a spoken sentence.

You actually think Ballmer is afraid of Linux, not of Apple? The majority of people and businesses buying computers are not aware of this desktop fight. Maybe some lost nerds will pick an OS just to defeit the Evil Other Side but I can not imagine a substantial part of the buyers basing their choice of OS on tactical-idealistic considerations in stead of their own preferences or needs. Ballmer is not likely to frighten people using Linux into choosing sides between Apple and Microsoft and I bet he knows it. If Ballmer needs Apple it is to convince people (Neelie Smit and others) that Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly in the OS market.
