  1. Aero Glass... restrictive again? on Why Vista Won't Suck · · Score: 1

I'm one of those people who generally dislikes default themes in anything. I actually use my Windows with the taskbar on top, and that's not because I'm some crazy fanatic using Apple-ish theme for windows.

Now, I wonder if Vista will be as rigid with themes as Windows XP, and will it only accept "signed" themes from MS, and encourage you to buy the oh-so-useful Plus!. In XP, the theming engine was one of the Big Things that were supposed to make the system better, and more popular, but yet, in order to use just about any theme out there, you have to jump through hoops and "patch" a dll in order for windows to recognize unsigned themes. I understand the need to protect users from unsigned, potentially dangerous themes, but in XP, it feels more like some sort of a crazy DRM, than protection of the user.

Personally, I use BT, both for downloading stuff fully legally, and not. I'm not trying to say that every single tracker out there is bad and evil. What I was trying to say that with trackers used to share illegal copies of software/music/movies/whatever, there is always a lot of discussion on whether or not they are actually illegal.

I suppose I should've made it clear that I mean legality of individual trackers, not trackers in general.

I find it strange that iPod would manage to hold the 90% of the marketshare with its features alone, at this point. There's other DAPs out there, that offer similar or sometimes even better features, and yet, if you asked your average Joe what alternatives to iPod he knows, he'd look at you funny and say "iPod nano?"

IPod not only managed to deliver a better product, they also managed to popularize it... Before iPods became popular, no mp3 players were popular - no flash player reached the level of popularity of ipods. IPods became "hip" and "cool" and that's part of their success. And that's also why Creative doesn't like Apple.

  14. Re:GMail is the future! on Mozilla Thunderbird Gets Firefox-style Tabs · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Personally, I dislike webmail interfaces.

There are many reasons for that. Some of them being that I have several email accounts, and an email client checks all my email faster than I'd check it manually. Another being the fact that my email client can regularly check my email without me paying any attention to it, and notify me if I have new messages (I know that there's gmail notifier, and stuff, but again, gmail is not all I use). Also, downloading messages via POP3 is a more viable option than using webmail on non-standard platforms, such as PDAs.

There are several more reasons, but my point is, I still see a lot of use for mail clients, and I don't see them going anytime soon.

Sounds like something that would have to keep a huge database of relations between songs. Also, it seems like something that would derandomize shuffle unless it was capable of generating entire playlists dynamically. While it seems like a fairly good idea, it could prove difficult to implement.

Then, also, I tend to skip songs for other reasons - for example, hearing the song too many times lately, and being bored of it.

  25. Different uses, different markets on Why Have PDAs Failed In The iPod Era? · · Score: 1
I have both a PDA, an Axim X50, and a harddrive MP3 player, an iRiver H10 20GB (yes, there's other MP3 players besides iPod. I know. Gasps). I carry both devices with me most of the time, because they serve two different purposes. The iriver lets me listen to music, can be used with one hand, and has decent battery live. My PDA can be used to go online when I have access to a wifi network, and it can check email, check slashdot, browse other websites that are somewhat PDA-friendly, and even use stuff like skype or irc. I can also take notes on it, set up reminders for tasks in the todo list, etc.

I wouldn't consider current PDAs media devices. Sure, they're capable of video and audio playback, and with my 1GB storage card, I can store longer movies on them, but the battery life isn't that great, and PDAs aren't really good at running for prolonged periods of time. PDAs are cool and stuff (or maybe not, since most don't come with white headphones), but they're mostly not designed to be "uber multimedia devices" that can be used like harddrive MP3 player. It's like TV tuner cards for PCs - you can use them to watch TV, and some people actually do, but most people will stick with their dedicated TV watching device.
