i see these sort of people all the time.. so focused on their phone they are not paying attention to what is going on around them. Be it busy downtown streets, train stations.. places you might want to pay some attention to avoid personal injury.
I've always been curious as to just what is so interesting that it cant wait 30 seconds for them to cross the street safely??
how is a "safety razor" designed not to cut you dangerous? Maybe you are thinking "straight razor" by chance?
I've tried several electric shavers, they take FOREVER and by the time i pass over the area over and over again it is raw. Single blade safety razor is my personal preference..
If only i found out about the safety razor earlier in life.. but at lesat the days of spending $20 for 5 "cartridges" which only last a few weeks are long gone. A single safety razor blade easily lasts a month since they have two sides and at $20 for a HUNDRED....(been using a safety razor for 10 years now).
anyone who is buying any "multiple blade" heads is just throwing money away. Seems every few years they bring out their latest "N" blade head and pitch how much better it is then the N-1 blade head.. "the latest 6 blade head is twice as effective as our old 5 blade model"... I find my single blade model is much easier to use and it never jams up and becomes garbage, not because it is dull, but becaues it is plugged up.
get a safety razor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.... best move you can make.. blades are easily replacable and super-cheap. I picked up 100 for around $20 like 3 years ago and still have some left....
We have a local newspaper where i live, i pay the "voluntary" $6 a week for the paper. I do this for two reasons: 1) i want to read those ads, they are all local companies and i want to see what grocery deals there are available, etc. 2) i like to support the young kids getting up and doing somethign with their time.
I dont mind some ads, but just because it is basically "free" to the advertiser doesnts give them a right to saturate me with them.
I love these posts about "specialty cycle shops" where you can get bikes (from a box, they are all shipped that way) at twice the price?
"Generally these bikes are supplied in flat-pack boxes to be assembled by the owner, or may be taken to a "proper bike shop" to be built-up, for an additional cost. "
Show me a bike which isnt shipped in a box, regardles of the costs? because they assemble it for you behind the counter.. doesnt mean it isnt shipped in a box.
Mine is a "pay as you go".. i dropped $10 at bestbuy for the phone, and pay monthly.... no contracts... nothing. Carrier locked, but a lot of phones are.
"Best Buy [bestbuy.com] has 8GB Verizon Motorola Moto E 4G No Contract Smartphone for $9.99"
I paid $10 for a Moto E on black friday and it came with a case. I bought two in case i lose one.. the MicroSD's i put in cost much more then the phone did.
I use them as "bike computers".. because at $10 for a throw-away phone it is MUCH cheaper then $160 for a "bike computer" which doesnt have software updates, doesnt play music, have maps or much of anything else.
so when they repair the bike lane they can ignore the road?
How about they dont repair either and your car gets all broken to shit from running over the massive potholes? dont really see bikes destroying the roads...
you cant really argue with them.. all the car people will complain about "getting a free ride" like they are paying for the roads and that money isnt from "general revenues".
Agree with you 100%. creating a small section and painting it for cyclests makes sense and the costs are not that great since they are already paving the roads.. widening it isnt a huge cost.
Here (ontario) you can only ride a few months of the year yet the cars can drive on it year round.. and most cars think they "own" the entire road, including the cycle lanes which become parkng spots.
I follow the laws closely, and have been hit TWICE from cars making right hand turns and not looking first. Given a choice, i would much rather ride on dedicated cycle paths, even if it is a much longer route.
I'm also an "average" cyclest. i ride home 3 times a week and average 150km/week (50km per trip).
My speeed is around 22-26 km/h as i have to deal with hills, traffic, stop lights, buses, my own physical limitations, etc.
The longer the distance, the more difficult it is to maintain higher average speeds. While I can do 45-50 km/h for very short burts (much higher on the downside of hills) this cant be held for long.
100 Miles in a few hours.. perhaps on a car, power assisted bike, etc..
I ride a lot.. i average 150km/week in the summer.. but lets see if your logic applies in the winter here.
the closest grocery store is ~6KM from where i live and in the winter the average snowfall for the season is 122 CM and we have temperatures as low as -25C (even lower with the wind chill).
Some of us live in very large countries where things are not as close together and the temps dont always favour riding.
I also have a DOT and am impressed with what it can do at that price point. I will probably get a few "echo" units as well.
One would think Apple will have a hard time moving a $350 item when i can get two echo's at that price. History indicates this isnt the case and apple fans will run and line up for days to get one before their friends have it.
Just waiting for amazon.ca to start sellling htem.. As it stands now, it doesnt actually ship from Canada, so when i ask for the weather i need to specify the country "alexia, what is the weather in toronto canada".
I also love my kindle but wish it has a larger screen.. they are priced weird, either they have the small screen and are almost disposable ($60ish) or a larger 10" and are rediculously expensive (~400)???
As a parent of three kids, I tend to agree with most of what you wrote.. but Smartphones are slighly different then say nintendo DS's of the past.
How many times has some mindless zombie kid almost walked into you as they are walking and using their phone at the same time, clueless of their surroundings? i dont recall kids walking and playing their DS's.
Good for you!! people need to stand up, our rights are slowly being eroded and we are rapidly turning into a "rental" society. They send out these blanket "settle or else" statements and a lot of people just settle vs the hastle/financial burden..
Sort of reminds me of the "419" scams.. email as many as you can and hope for positive results.
I have a couple old T420's which came with windows 7. Replaced them with Mint/Ubuntu and i cant think of a single negative experience. it is almost like they designed for linux or something. sleep/wake on screen open always works and has never once "hung" as it does on my desktop from time to time.
As someone says below.. they were known as "stinkpads".. but that was long ago and the quality has improved greatly since their "ibm stinkpad" days.
have the same issue as you. The lockout is beyond excessive from a drivers perspective (it pretty much only lets you adjust the radio) but seriously.. if the passenger is doing the button pushing do i still need to come to a full stop?
Was hoping someone would post about the "safety lock enabled" and sure enough.
One of our cars has a built in GPS, the other two dont.
Two cars - Stop at a light or pull over and adjust the after market stick on the window GPS units. One car - Safety lock enabled... you pretty much have to pull off the road, stop the thing and put it in park before it lets you do ANYTHING with it. Oddly enough, it will let you adjust the radio.
Half of the systems settings are also "safety locked" and it is a constant source of frusration as everything seems to be at least 3 menus deep. And for this i think it was a $3,000 option... total waste.
I'm with you on this one and have been using bluetooth headphones every day for several years now. I find it interesting to see how many people walk around holding their phone in their hand, wires danging.
Why not just bluetooth to the phone, put the phone away in your backpack and not have to worry about wires being caught on things? Of course they are not "white ear-buds" so everyone knows i have an iphone (i dont actually have an iphone either).
To those who say bluetooth audio sucks:
You do realise i am using headphones on a busy train using compressed MP3s on a phone... Not in a studio using high quality equipment right? Yes, i have to charge them, the ones i have last 5 hours (consistently) and i charge them every few days (i charge the phone more often then this and the headset charges in like 30 mins max).
not having to have my phone in my hand and still being able to can change songs, adjust the volume, etc is a huge added bonus (pause, previous, next, mute, and answer are all buttons on the bluetooth headset which are easy to access).
Then again, if you are a hipster you need to be seen walking around with the newest iphone in your hand, how else do others know you have it?
I found the US system to be more friendly to be honest. At least there i could see a "specialist" without having to go find a "family dr" and get them to refer me costing me time and several visits.
Here (Ontario, Canada) it really does seem to be around maximizing the number of trips you make. That may be OK, but they waste a huge amount of your time as they book an appointment at 10:00 but wont see you until it is closer to 11:00. If you wanted to see me at 11:00, why not just book the appointment then? Because they double/triple book to make sure they are paid (you swipe your card upon arrival, not upon service being delivered and if you leave because the wait was too long they are still paid). On the few times i went to a US dr, i dont recall the waiting being nearly as bad.

i was looking for that article when this thread was started, but thought it came from straight dope and couldnt locate it.. thanks for the post!

Opps..didnt realize i wasnt logged in.. reposting as myself.
Ontario here as well.
Dont forget about the "victim surcharge fine" (so a charge on a charge)...

try importing text books from overseas and see what happens.

Another vote for thinkpad.
