  2. Crying wolf... on Chinese Bloggers Stage Hoax · · Score: 1

Reminds me of the old story of the boy who cried wolf.

A boy was watching a flock of sheep. One day, he was bored, so he started yelling, "Help there's a wolf attacking my sheep!" The rest of the town ran to the boy's aid, they looked every where to make sure the boy was safe, but there was no wolf. So the returned to their daily lives.

The next day the boy was bored again, so he started yelling, again, "Help there's a wolf attacking my sheep!" Again the rest of the town ran to the boy's aid, but again, there was no wolf.

The third day a wolf actually showed up and started to attack the flock. The boy started yelling, for a third time, "Help there's a wolf attacking my sheep!" The townspeople tired of falling for the boys tricks, ignored him. Unfortunately, the boy was never heard from again, when the wolf ate the entire flock and then turned on the boy.

Drawing attention to the sensationalistic desires of the media by fraudulent representing the actions of a government with a less than stellar reputation is not the best way to make a point. However amusing the resultant firestorm of reports were, Wang Xiaofeng may never be listened to again.

    Shame on the media!

So what we need is an open source, community different Anti Virus project, that gives hackers the development community a chance of keeping up with the trojan cycle.

Let's face it, business are considered by development life cycle, SOX compliance, and manpower. If we all band together, and work towards countering the hacker insurgency that can adapt and expand much quicker than most private organizations, the we might stand a change of keeping up and getting ahead of them.

slipping someone $5 real world currency for Boardwalk would be cheating in Monopoly

There is nothing in the rules against this, it is a not so commonly implemented tactic for acquiring property in the game.

The same mentality should apply to farmer's in WoW. They spend absurd amounts of time to acquire enough resources to sell to people willing to pay the price. My thinking is that this would be their "job". So let them have at it and if you don't like it, earn the gold yourself or undercut their prices.

If Blizzard truly didn't support the concept in their game, they would do more than just "ban" the activity in the EULA (which is pretty much as useful as putting a "No guests allowed clause in a rental agreement), they'd improve the economic engine by removing these endless supplies of easy cash.

  6. Natural Selection on Google Share Loss Amounts to Billions · · Score: 1

Technology is the modern day extension of Darwin's Natural Selection.

It has the ability to accomplish tasks that would normally take thousands of people decades to accomplish. The simplest (or complex) device can be implemented to lift heavy rocks, build buildings, distribute information, cook your food, grow your food, sustain and provide life, pretty much any step in the human life cycle. Due to cost, availability and public blacklash, we are far from a complete implementation of any of these

If you are not the owner, implementer or have control over how that technology is used, you'll be scared that the technology might make your role no longer required and you will lose your means to provide income for yourself and your family. You have that right. I'd argue though, that the Google's of the world, also have the right, to make you obsolete and that it is your resposibility to adapt or become extinct.

I sincerely hope that 50 years from now, we as a society have abandonned any arcane concepts about traditional delivery methods and have the ability to analyze and reevaluate situations so that time and money is not wasted on competition but cooperation and best method implementations.

  7. The problem is... on Forecasting Doomsday · · Score: 1, Interesting

the probability of global environmental dissepation occuring tomorrow is extremely small.

The reality is that a large single global event, whether it be a meteor strike, a volcano eruption or a tsunami will cause the a major loss of life on the planet earth. What is the probability of this occuring tomorrow, next week or even this year, is extremely low. The probability that this type of event will occur in the next 10,000 years, well that's probably (no pun intended) a more reasonable expectation.

Governments can't afford to stake their political livelihoods on this type of low probability outcome. The reality for them is 4 or 5 years, that's it. Slow and progressive destruction of the environment is the same sort of thing. Who knows who the be in charge of the world in 50 years, so current governments are willing to risk their current votes on the chance that in the future something might happen.

I disagree with this is part. On one hand, I agree that the likeliness of the earth being uninhabitable in 25 years is low, I do believe that if we don't incorporate sound environmental policy into our beliefs and plans for the future, the world will one day be a not so nice play to live.

There are far to many levels of responsibility and for the average global citizen they don't know or care who is responsible for what.

Group memberships are forced upon us all by nature and society. Quite often people overlook the fact that they share the same planet with 7 billion other people, in order to reserve the right to be a member of a smaller grouping. Whether that be the United Nations, a continental union or trade group, a country, a state or province, a county, a region, a city, a neighbourhood, a block, a house, a family, a private club, a company, an organization, a religion. These are all just different arrangements we have made with others to try and regulate commonalities amongst our existence. The reason none of these organizations ever work, is probably because none of us are distinct member of any of them and thus our own interests become conflicted at some point.

You want a solution, which seems impossible, but will have to happen eventually or in some manner or another otherwise our conflicts will be the end of us. Then we all have to suck it up, pick a fundamental set of rules we can all agree with, and go with it.

Someone has to "control" the internet. If not the UN, then how about some sort of open source monitoring system where the user community and market demand controls and regulates the nomenclature and oversight of the internet.
