They do have VT-d, but I believe transactional memory is a Haswell only for the moment. I have read nothing on whether AMD will implement such extensions (I could be wrong on this).

I hit submit a bit too soon. I'm going to wager a guess that the Ivy Bridge-E -- if released -- will have the missing Haswell features on the 4770K. If not then getting the best of both might involve Xeon, if those chips allow for overclocking.

Well, "free" clock headroom aside, Intel removing features from the K series parts (VT-d, etc.) has been going on since Sandy Bridge I believe. Basically, if you want the best of both worlds you will want to invest in an Extreme Edition processor. As quick search on ark will show, the 3770K does not have VT-d while the 3930K does.

Your post reminds me of some time I spent software testing at a company that maintained a mainframe system.

While I can say that I am not interested in the craft of mainframe applications maintenance/development it was interesting to find out how such systems worked. I was taught by the departments guru on the system as he explained everything from JCL to copybooks.

"It's hard enough to find people that can step into a team to support a major project."

I couldn't agree with you more. Besides the guru the only other person with mainframe experience was the manager (both gentlemen in their 50's) the rest were web testers. Granted the company maintained COBOL apps and their equivalent web apps but the majority of requests came for mainframe application improvements which for large projects only left two people who could jump right in.

Before I left he was looking everywhere he could for a QA tester with the years of mainframe and COBOL experience needed to do what you just said.

  7. Orcs with Hyena masks...OH MY! on The Dungeons and Dragons Fourth Edition Preview Books · · Score: 2, Insightful

Instead of Gnolls just being Orcs with Hyena masks on, they'll now apparently fight with pack tactics and cowardly tricks. Giving flavour to the opposition seems to be the basic idea: off-the-rack encounters will no longer feel so rote.

Do your monsters just stand there while adventurers come by with a wagon to take their stuff? If that's the case then you fail as a GM.

Tip: Doing some research on monsters you add to a campaign will give you a better idea about how to use them in fights. Even then there is nothing wrong with monsters using guerilla tactics and *gasp* cowardly tricks. There is also nothing wrong with your adventurers parlaying as opposed to fighting to avoid encounters.

It's called an imagination, use it.

Nope. No more illegal than you eating cereal on a Sunday.

Very few people use all of their computer horsepower, need the quality of kitchen knives they get for wedding presents, or need as many pairs of shoes as they own, either.

Noted, as I have seen this point made many times on this website. I am sure you do not use your off road vehicle everyday to its fullest potential. Unless of course you own another vehicle and use your off road one for fun which would then make my point here worthless and myself a jackass :P

But I actually use my vehicle, in exactly the role for which it was intended.

Just as my brother-in-law uses his 4x4 to haul his tractor and bushhog and see to the needs of his camps for the hunting season.

The point of my post was in answer to a question about the attractiveness of SUVs -- as I remember that radio segement being rather lengthy I felt I should share a summary with the person who asked the question -- and less about the legality of what vehicles are used for. As far as I am concerned if that is the vehicle you want great, its not my place to tell you what does or does not meet your needs.

I think you are about spot on in your assumption. I remember listening to a radio program some years ago (I can't remember it, but I know it was from an NPR affiliate) where a gentleman talked about the attractiveness of SUVs. He called the concept "command seating" and that people do feel safer being above the road. I also recall watching Car and Driver (the TV program) where engineers for the Ford Expidition claimed all the advanced off-road features would never get used by a majority of the public.

Then again maybe drivers feel safer knowing their vehicle has improved traction for offroad meaning:

offroad feature = more safety on road.
