    I'm a grumpy old gamer myself, and I think that new games are massively better than they used to be. I'm not a kid any more though, and though I still enjoy games I don't get nearly as much from them as I used to. If the old games were better, they'd be making games like the old games now. Besides, there's masses of innovation - I'm just not that interested in it. Scribblenauts, Mirror's Edge, Echochrome, are recent ones, not to mention the Wii itself - that revolutionised the console market, and not through flashy graphics. An entire genre of hugely popular games was spawned by Dance Dance Revolution. I'm too old and stuck in my ways, so I hate all these, and continue playing my JRPGs, driving sims and 4X strategy games :P.

    But those who are familiar with how the language is used know that "ice" is a word that applies to certain cases of solids without regard to their chemical composition.

    That's what I told the judge. I asked her if she wanted ice in her drink - she didn't specify h2o ice.

    Honestly... ice means h2o ice. I cannot think of any time anyone would use the word ice (alone without adjectives) to mean anything else, save for completely unrelated slang. Educate me....

    The windchill effect is basically a made up term that is _supposed_ to tell you how likely the surrounding atmosphere is to give you frostbite, though no one can agree on a decent standard that works well. It is pointless trying to apply it to freezing rates of any substance (notice how ice (basically) always freezes at 0, whatever the windchill?).

    Here in the UK they're both chip and pin - few retailers will take signed for cards AFAIK. My credit card has had the bit where your signature goes rubbed off for the past couple of years (revealing void void void), and I doubt very much it'll swipe through any magnetic card readers now. I still use it regularly though (I know it's pretty insecure, but if I lose it I'll just phone up and get it cancelled).

    In the UK if there are charges which are made to your debit card which you claim are not from negligent acts on your part (like your example), they have to reimburse your account basically immediately, then do the investigations. They are liable for fraudulent access to your account, as long as you've not been negligent. If you voluntarily agreed to the full transaction though, you're out of luck (ie. a business who went bust, or a scammer who didn't fulfil their side of the bargain) - it's just like giving cash to them. Credit cards have more protection though - any transaction over 100ukp you can get back, for almost any reasonable reason, ie. paid and did not get the goods, etc. Transactions under 100ukp are covered in the same way debit transactions are I think.

    This is a new idea - and a bad one IMO. There is no right to control distribution of your creations. Copyright's only purpose should be to help ideas get into the public domain - the point is not to protect the original content from infringement, nor provide a revenue stream for the author for life. No one has an absolute _right_ over their ideas if they share them with someone else.

    There can never be such a thing as ownership of ideas. If you claim there is, illegal ownership of those ideas would follow, and we really do not want to go down that path. What we have now is an artificial monopoly enforced by the government to prohibit ideas from spreading so as to enable the originator(s) to generate more money. I do support this to some degree, purely because in a limited form it keeps corporational innovation moving forward - I don't think it would affect individuals that much. However, what extensive lobbying has resulted in is a system which allows individuals and corporations to profit from works which my grandparents consider old. The point of copyright is to encourage individuals or corporations to share with society, it is not a sacred right to print money or a sacred right to have absolute control or your creation.

    Just FYI - The Commonwealth of Nations is pretty open, and is not a British controlled organisation. I guess the point I'm making is that just because Australia is a member of the Commonwealth, doesn't mean anything at all about their political and legal system necessarily, at least within certain limits - the commonwealth is pretty forgiving. Basically the commonwealth just needs you to be a democracy (the rules are a little lax), and more importantly have a decent legal system and not be racist. The Harare Declaration is basically all that is needed to join the commonwealth :

    * We believe that international peace and order, global economic development and the rule of international law are essential to the security and prosperity of mankind;
    * We believe in the liberty of the individual under the law, in equal rights for all citizens regardless of gender, race, colour, creed or political belief, and in the individual's inalienable right to participate by means of free and democratic political processes in framing the society in which he or she lives;
    * We recognise racial prejudice and intolerance as a dangerous sickness and a threat to healthy development, and racial discrimination as an unmitigated evil;
    * We oppose all forms of racial oppression, and we are committed to the principles of human dignity and equality;
    * We recognise the importance and urgency of economic and social development to satisfy the basic needs and aspirations of the vast majority of the peoples of the world, and seek the progressive removal of the wide disparities in living standards amongst our members.

    Note the entire lack of accepting the British Queen as head of state. Also, there are two countries which were never British colonies at all which are now in the commonwealth (Rwanda and Mozambique).

    The main obvious effect of the commonwealth is simply easier visa and work permit aquisition in other member countries. There's also the commonwealth games, which is (at least in the UK) probably the second biggest non-single sport sporting event.
