There's nothing wrong with the electoral college - as originally specified in the constitution. What's wrong is how it's been implemented today.
Today, all electors in the state are forced (by the state) to cast their votes for the one candidate that received the state majority vote. The way it was originally designed, and the way it should operate today, is that each elector cast their vote for the candidate that received the majority vote in that elector's voting district. This would result in a much more accurate representation of the population than what we have today.
The electoral college is there to give each region (state) as much power as the next region in the federation, creating a balance of power in the federal level.
Not true - if this were the case, then each state would have the same number of electors, similar to how the Senate works. Instead, each state has a number of electors proportional to the state's population, similar to how the House of Representatives works.
The way the electoral college was originally designed, each elector would cast their vote according to the majority in their electoral district. This means that not all electoral votes in a state would necessarily be cast for the same candidate. If the system worked this way today, this problem would not exist.
The solution is neither to change the constitution, nor to have each state's electors vote for the national majority, but rather to implement the electoral college the way the constitution originally defined it - each elector casts their vote for the candidate supported by their district.
I just did that, actually... developed a site for my kids' school, and put a link on the bottom saying "this page best viewed with Firefox" - although i guess I could put a link to Opera in there too...
I have 1.5 installed on a machine at home, and if i remember correctly dragging does not work. I will revisit to make sure.
Customize menu option can't fix how the menus are painted - ie borders, padding, colors - all of the things that make up "polish"
I haven't tried this path, I'll investigate. If I find something that can do what I want in terms of polishing up the interface, then maybe it'll be worth a try.
Again, I'll have to double-check when I get home... maybe i remembered wrong (it's been known to happen from time to time).
Not sure where this came from, don't think I mentioned problems of this sort....
I think they're referring to people like me who still run 1.0.7 and need to upgrade to 1.5.0.4. I choose not to upgrade because I think the 1.5 interface is too sloppy compared to the 1.0.7 interface. A bit too much wasted whitespace in the menus, specifically - doesn't feel as clean and polished.
I do use 1.5 on my home machine, and one thing I've noticed is that managing bookmarks in 1.0.7 is easier - I can drag and drop items as necessary, whereas 1.5 makes me use a "move up" button.
Sorry,/. editors, I will NOT be upgrading any time soon.
Ok so I'm a geek and I'm trying the puzzles. Sue me.
I got a valid answer for number 5 (Septoku) that's different from the "official" answer in the key. Anyone else finding multiple valid answers to any of the problems?
If I remember correctly, it is not always simultaneous. The decision of when to jettison the SRB has to a lot to do with the pressure remaining in the SRB as well as the time in flight, so they could very well be dropped at slightly different times, enough to not see the left booster.
Here's a good site with a lot of info about the SRBs (incidentally, this page appears to be the source for much of the SRB info on Wikipedia).
The heat shield tiles are designed to be reused for several missions. If they fail inspection after a mission, they are replaced prior to the next mission.
Ok, I hate to be a bear about this, but I know for fact it's the HD. I have seen 2 Dell techs take apart 2 different D600's (not to mention my own explorations - what can I say, I'm a geek). Also the fact that I've swapped out a few drives on this notebook, and I'm looking at the HD caddy right now - under the left palmrest.
The CPU is under the keyboard on the left side. The HD is under the palm rest on the left side. It's a fact. Deal with it.
This is a pic of the D600 motherboard. The pic is taken from the perspective of a user holding the machine on their lap ready to use. You can clearly see the CPU socket (blue) on the top, and the slot for the hard drive on the bottom. The hollow area in the lower right is the battery - also quite hot after extensive use.
No way - just look at the size of the hinge. The X200 has a short hinge, maybe an inch or so. The laptop in the picture has a longer hinge, closer to 2 inches or more. Also, the burning laptop doesn't have the VGA port on the back edge.
My original thought was that this was either a Latitude D800 or D810, now I'm thinking it might be an Inspiron 5100 (there seems to be a port on the right side, similar to this).
I had thought that also, especially as there seems to be a water slick on the tablecloth. I wasn't sure if the water was there from before, causing the fire, or after, trying to put it out.
This is a D600, not a D610, and it is most definitely the hard drive. The 610 wasn't on our company's approved hardware list yet when they bought it for me. But thanks for the tip about the layout - makes me even more interested in getting a 610 when I get the chance.
While it's never caught fire, my Latitude D600 can get quite hot after several hours of World of Warcraft/Call of Duty/etc.
The hard drive is right under the left palm-rest area, and it has quite literally burned my hand several times. It's not suprising to me to see one on fire.
this story gets posted... I only submitted it 5 days ago (and had it rejected)... Is there some secret handshake I need to learn to get a story accepted?

found my mistake - oops.

Amen to that. I was thinking the same thing as I watched...
At 3:14-3:15 the other booster does appear briefly at the lower right edge of the frame.

You never know with some people. You know better, I know better... but do they?

I'm pretty sure the parent poster was being more than a little sarcastic...
in having a Vonage ad under an article about VOIP security risks?
Where's a moderator point when you need one... I'd mod this whole thread funny if I could...
I, personally, have absolutely no problem with that image - I rather liked it, actually ;P
But I could be fired for accessing it. Gotta love it.
Dude, stick a "NSFW" on that, will ya!
And yet they still can't keep their servers up...
Time to dig up the game CD...
