This will be one more way poor parenting will be explained away. Personally I would rather the kid be at home driving a stolen car than out with his friends driving my stolen car. Really I can see a rash of halfway houses devoted to curing kids of WOW going to the parks with their plastic bracelets and emo haircuts staring at me, drooling as I sit with my laptop writing slashdot posts.

Everyone thinks it is the end of the world hell if it is not the bible thumpers it is the left-wing looneys. 6. Re:Useless comparison on Vista vs. XP Game Stability and Performance · · Score: 5, Insightful

It is not useless if you have a 2gz P4 Nvidia system and you wonder what would happen if you "upgraded". The article was interesting had a wide range of games and had Christmas tree graphs that showed how lame Vista is in game performance and how little you get for your money by "upgrading". It is fair to say that on newer computers you get about the same performance as your old computer so you will not be losing anything. I cannot for the life of me think about anything worth upgrading to vista for a home PC yet. It is not any safer and is more annoying and has the same printdriver scanner support as Ubuntu. When I upgrade my work computer it will be to Ubuntu and my gameing rig to an DS and PSP duct taped together back to back.

The problem with OpenDocuments incompatibility with MS Office is that Office is so much better than "anything" else. Office is worth the extra expence and possibility of some vague surmountable problem because it is a really good product. If you have seen Office 12 in action you would imagine how much damage a good Administrative assistant could do....

All you need is text, pure text - a small file of little hexidecimal thingys that can be translated on anyones fly to a huge and strange monstrosity of formating and flying and spinning boxes.

I have seen the future and it is the ability to see changes before they take place....Moooooooohaaaaahaaaaaa....hack cough , Where was I!? oh yes I have no idea why it looks that way in print preview but prints out with the margin cut off, just cut and paste out of the old document and into the new one. It just looks purple it prints out black. Why am I naked?, why am at school?......

There will be a dock with a larger screen so you can plug your kid in while you wait in line at the DMV.

I hope this is a way to get a subscription for Red vs. Blue or any of the number of independent serials that will be available.

I am sure that this will have a greater impact on video than it had on music. - as far as dividing up the money pie.

  16. What if OpenDocument really sucks on Open Source In Public Sector Meeting Opposition · · Score: 1
I was on a standards committee responsible for "file formats" for a state in the Southern US. I have to say that what MA and Maylasia is doing would be impossible here. First of all there was never even a hint of using anything remotely Linux like or open source. The main problem was that the different IT shops wanted to be able to do what they have done all along. We had Gartner come in and do studies and presentations - it was interesting but in the end things are slightly better because people are aware that there may be incompatibilities in software when sharing documents.

The most important thing to know about a state government in the Southern US is that each agency is autonomous to a degree. There is no one Central IT.

I have to say that in the small state agency that I work for is a whole MS shop except for the VM server which hosts MS operating systems. After seeing the new Office 12 I would really, really hate to go to something else. I cannot really see a benefit to trying to re-do something that is really not that broken. I have a friend who is a research scientist and when ever I give him one of my crazy ideas for a better future he is always saying "what are you trying to do?" That is the first question.

If Maylasia is trying to produce government in a way they can - really can - I mean if you have open source stuff but nobody who knows how to use it that knows "the system" - then you are producing confusion and cost savings. If you do it the easiest way - you get government. Right now doing things in a strange and haphazard way while funding the local economy of Redmond and the rest of Washington State is the easiest way to do government.

I wince at MA - I just know things are going to be very screwed for a while for a lot of poor it helpdesk people all over the world - things will settle out but not without some loss of choice and usability and some shops and most users along with venders will rebel, especially small shops with no IT.

I know that MS provides quality software with some of the best technical support and genuine cool factor when it comes to office suites. I also predict that the cobbled together pile of underwear that is OpenDocument will only be worn on the butt of jokes months from now. I know that laptops will always have MS office on them that is a certainty. Trying to make people do things is the surest way to get them to resent.
