"And not a small factor here for north America, it's not family friendly, 2 seats, where do you put the baby, do you have to shuttle your wife, then your kid to your destination?"
Right, cause I see so many cars with more than 2 people in them on my drive to work every day...
Americans might think they need SUVs but that doesn't mean they do.
I don't think society's opinions about climate change have anything to do with lining up with Anne Coulter or Michael Moore, and only a limited amount to do with Gore. My feelings on the matter, and I'm sure I'm not alone, are that I don't know which side to stand on because both sides have data that to my layman eyes appear totally believable seperately but utterly contradictive together. Why would anyone listen to histerical party hacks on a matter like this, a matter totally disconnected from their "cultural stomping ground" of expertise? Maybe I'm just not particularly political any more, but I don't see this as a political issue, but rather as a set of facts that need to be verified or debunked decisively before political stances can be made on it.
The reason the DMZ has been and continues to be defended by the South is to keep the North Koreans from invading and imposing their ideology which has proved capable of starving millions of its own people. Of course it's a matter of perspective, but if I were a South Korean I think I'd see any reasonable way of better securing the DMZ as money well spent. Unlike many militaries in the world, the strength of the South Korean one could be a matter of national survival.
I'm not saying this sentry gun thing is great, if it doesn't work it doesn't work. And I agree with you on your more technical criticisms, telling friend from foe etc. But this isn't the Mexican border we're talking about...
Yeah pretty good in the US, if you compare it to total shitholes. But if you prefer to make a comparison that actually means something, like with Europe, Japan, Canada etc, your police situation isn't exactly "pretty good".
Well that depends if you consider a neanderthal sub-human or simply non-human. They did, after all, have bigger brains than us. Of course they were physically bigger which means they weren't necessarily more intelligent, but there's clearly a grey area in our understanding of neanderthals that a eugenicist could take advantage of.
A MW-year isn't the same as a MW per year. The article says "A major, coal-burning power plant can churn out about 500 megawatts a year." The "year" at the end of that sentence is not needed, and it would seem from him putting it in there that the author doesn't realize a MW is not a unit of energy but a unit of energy per time. That's all anyone is saying here...
It (sort of) makes sense to measure the output of solar panels in MW/year, since the generating capacity is increasing over time. It's like saying "I'm making coal plants at a rate of 500MW per year", when you mean that you build one 500MW coal plant per year.
No, the author is making a mistake. Andykuan above explains what it is. A 500MW coal plant produces 500MJ every second. "500MW per year" doesn't make sense.
I'm just trying to figure out how you turned this into a criticism of america... that was smooth man, I got to the end and had to remind myself that I don't have to register a blog in my real name..
Do you know for a fact that it's not easy? Because it sounds a lot like it's a glorified poli-sci degree, and I'm pretty sure (on the sliding scale that is university difficulty) that a poli-sci degree isn't a particular taxing one.
Now I hate to be apparently the first to bring this up, but in general poor people are fatter, true? I am aware that in America, this phenomenum has been diminishing in the last 20 years or so, and rich the rich have been closing the "fat gap", but is that the case in France? It wouldn't be that much of a stretch in my mind to believe that poor people have lower IQs. I wonder if you tested fat and thin people from the same socio-economic background if the results of this study would have been as striking. Of course I didn't actually RTFA so maybe they already did that..
My point is that they are justifying some illegal act with other, potentially worse, ones. I know there are other ways to communicate privately. I just don't like these people glorifying piracy by playing to the conspiratorial element of society's distrust of governments, governments that for the most part are just trying to protect the people of their nations.
Man what a great idea. Justifying the 99% of the traffic on this thing that is piracy with 1% of "secret communications", of which a significant chunk is going to be concerning other law breaking, laws likely worse than piracy. Wire taps are the tools of opressive society! Oh and also the tools to catch mobsters and terrorists, I guess. But don't worry, I'm sure the people who wanted to blow up thousands of westerners on planes about this time wouldn't figure out how to use something like this.

Wait a minute... Didn't they have one of these in China? And as I recall, it wasn't very effective.
we just tell everyone the planes all have anti missile systems, when really they just shoot out party streamers or something equally adorable?
Yet here you are on Slashdot...
I love the wandering line of thought of some slashdot responses. Chess player runs for president of Russia ... Fucking Chinese!
Deep Blue for 2008!
Funny guy... Anyone know any more jokes that make light on friendly fire incidents? Those are hilarious.
No joke. Just don't use it at twilight or you get stuck in a urinal for 12 hours.

John Kerry? YOU read slashdot?!
Well you know, I can see why we had to give them the vote in the end. But why the fuck did we teach them to read?

Actually I think his comments like this were only part of the problem. I think the main problem was he was a prick and couldn't work with academics.

That's true. And a MWh is a unit of energy. But you said
"MW is a unit of energy. MWh is a unit of energy per time everything else seems correct".
A MW is a unit of power, aka a unit of energy per time. A MW-hour is a unit of energy. (joules/time * time = joules)
Is this a troll? That is exactly backwards..

That or sequestering CO2 from coal plants.
