Complaining about dupes accomplishes only one thing: it generates far more duplicate traffic in the form of repetetive dupe complaints than the dupe articles themselves.

For real. How many times has TMM posted a first post with the same sentence: "Story is a DUPE. Original article can be found here. $SLASHDOT_EDITOR you suck. ^_^" ?

He just does it for karma points. After all, why would anyone who knew it was a dupe have any interest in commenting on it again?

You said you have a girlfriend, right? So, uh, unless you are lying, why don't you ask her?

Does it count as a dupe if Digg did it first?

Yes, of course, because slashdot is supposed to be all original content. Oh, wait. They link to articles from other media sources... Hmmm... So, then, yeah, they have to be the first to link it, and Slashdot editors should spend most of their time reading digg and boingboing and the like to make sure that nobody else linked an article first. Oh, wait, but then how would readers that don't read those other sites ever see that material? For that matter, how would the editors find time to review submissions if they spent all their time reading other sites? I'm almost stumped here.

I've got an idea. Why don't we let slashdot be slashdot, digg be digg, boingboing be boingboing, and stop worrying about the fucking dupes!

That's why I didn't find [his] commentary terribly insightful.

He wasn't trying to be insightful, he was just trying to get first post with enough links or quotes from the article to get modded up by people completely lacking the ability to think critically. This guy does this all the time. The problem is that mods don't RTFA before modding up the first post that sounds like the author might have RTFA, whether or not it actually offers any insight in to the subject. In this particular case, the three links to the various magnetic products might seem relavent and informative to someone who hasn't read the article, but I think they are more of a distraction, as they really have nothing to do with the kind of ion exchange dialysis that the article actually refers to. I'll agree that the article is short of scientific detail, so I, too, will suspend judgement, but I don't see how the original (the first, imagine that) post is insightful/informative.
