Look I like Roy Blunt Jr. He's pretty funny, does the witty but behind the times old guy pretty well. But I do totally disagree with him on this one.
Having said that I RTFA (the horror!) and he's arguing that this is the beginning of something much worse. That even though TTS sounds like Steven Hawking now it is getting better. He even cites an IBM employee boasting at how realistic they are able to get TTS these days.
Again I totally disagree with his position but it's getting a little tough to read the same "snappy comebacks" from people who didn't read the article. He addressed the "how it sounds" argument, he addressed the "reading to my 4yo" argument and he addressed the "Americans with Disabilities Act" argument in the article.
What he didn't address were Fair Use, dying business models protected by bad law, the progress of how media is enjoyed by people these days and how one could turn the Kindle's ability to TTS a book into a great PR piece that might help his members sell more books. Those are the things we should be pointing out, not regurgitating the same rhetoric over and over even though he's already made up his mind on these.
Finally, I'm no longer limited to just searching the continents for Waldo. Now, I can also search the oceans.
I swear I'll find him, and when I do, he better look out!
Just like with the proverbial dog and car I think you need to ask yourself; "what will I do when I catch him"? You owe it to yourself to be honest when you answer.
Well, it's not now. But the EU might change that. All opinion on whether that is right or wrong aside my point is just that MS can either turn crisis into opportunity and do something snazzy to add better package management to Windows or they can drag their feet and be subjected to fines, ridicule and further legal troubles. Being pretty pessimistic about MS I'm guessing they will choose the later.
Great, now my grandma is going to call me up to ask why the Internets isn't working. Then I will have to go to Walmart just to buy my free webbrowser.
No one said you shouldn't be able to download it. The best suggestion I've heard so far is an addition to Add/Remove programs that allows you to find apps on the web and install them from there. Third party apps could be included as well with Group Policy settings and local App Download Servers (like WSUS) for corporate environments that want to control what can be downloaded and installed on corporate computers.
Anyway there are plenty of ways to do it; the challenge is for MS to do it in a way that a) doesn't suck and b) allows fair access by third party apps.
I don't consider any of the reasons you provided as "rational". "We can't control it, we can't tell if your on it when your driving" are not good reasons to me. If a cop can't tell that you are impaired by giving you a field sobriety test then the any thought of arrest should end right there. The reason a cop can tell a raving drunk but has difficulty determining if "smiley" is high is because alcohol significantly impairs your physical coordination while marijuana does not. I don't recommend driving while intoxicated on anything but I would much rather take my chances with people who are "baked as hell" and driving then people who slam 6-10 drinks in a bar and then get behind the wheel.
I have four children; I'm much more worried about them out drinking with people then smoking. Hell, I'm more worried about them smoking tobacco then I am about them smoking marijuana.
Not to stereotype you but I would have thought a guy with a/. handle of Garcia (not to mention the low id) that runs a website called Lazy Lighting would be a little more enlightened on the relative dangers between alcohol and marijuana. Screw the "we can't keep teh childrenz from smoking" rhetoric, the only real reason they have is the trillions you mentioned at the end of your post. America needs to wake up and realize that the emperor wears no clothes.
Why should I read this FA if the author apparently didn't finish high school?
The anonymous submitter and CmdrTaco's grammar skills have little to do with performance in Ubuntu. RTFA; it makes a good point and I for one hope that this observation is accepted by the Ubuntu developer's and something is done about it.
Not sure if this is what the PP means but this certainly is native linux running in Windows.
andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows 2000 based systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista; 32-bit versions only). This project was started for Dynamism for the GP2X community, but its userbase far exceeds its original design. andLinux is free and will remain so, but donations are greatly needed.
And anyway, AC, the point is that even if this didn't exist but I got an itch tomorrow to do it myself no one would stop me with a "Whoa, whoa, whoa, you can only compile and run that code on X".
with X representing a variable, not a popular OS by Apple:-)

Maybe this is a good time to try an alternative like Foxit?
So is the guy's name in the article...Jamz lol what a goofy name hehe
Pfft. This from a guy named "Anonymous Coward".
Happy sequential Unix time day.
I am spending it drinking alone on a Friday night and wishing I had a girlfriend. How are the rest of you guys celebrating?
About the same. Oh, except my wife is asleep in the next room.
Except it won't because unix time doesn't account for leap seconds
See here!
technically it's a dupe.

Why do you hate us? Can't you just let us have our fun?
(although I guess you are technically correct, which, after all, is the best kind of correct).
This is NOT Microsoft's responsibility.

I see IE's bundling with Windows as a *boon* for browser competition.
I mean, without IE pre-installed on the box, how is Joe User going to go and download Firefox, Safari, Opera or Chrome?
See here.

Sounds like the piece should be called "Ohm's Law".
OINAE - Ohm is not an Engineer!
He did.
Is a "quaternary bit" a "quaternary binary digit"? Doesn't make sense. I think you're after a "quaternary digit", or "quit".
I like the sound of 'quigit'.
Quigit eh? Quyte nice. You'll get no quyble from me.
Plus, let's flip this on its head: do you REALLY want to have to publish your changes so that Microsoft can take advantage of your hard work?
Yes. That's how Free Software is supposed to work.
Lets compare apples to rocks why don't we.
Apples, rocks, it seams that AT&T is perfectly willing to throw both at it's customers...
OK, my bad. I've been fighting the anti-drug rhetoric in the US for so long now I tend to knee jerk out of frustration. My apologies if I offended.

Rails can only prosper from this (ugh, I hate how I'm phrasing this) 'merger'.
I agree. They can really leverage synergies and break down some silos with this.
Well then I'm excited.
Under Bill, vi will be the national standard. Yeah!!!
If you ask me Bram Moolenaar would be an IMprovement over Bill.
echo -e "\a" >>/dev/pts/0
Makes user's terminal beep. Fun stuff.

Probably because IE6 is irrelevant.
More like a large steaming pile of excrement.
Steaming piles of excrement are totally relevant when discussing Microsoft with First Post trolls.
