isn't radio essentially advertising for the labels? I for one welcome this because by reversing payola, it is far more likely that radio stations will turn to independent labels and unsigned bands for material to play on the air, and the indies will welcome this because they want to be heard and make a living without selling out and being indebted to the big labels -- and we "consumers" will hear better music as an end result. Everybody wins! Well, everybody except the big labels, who seem to be hell-bent on corporate suicide.

Between my work schedule and social life, I don't have much time for television during prime time. I sometimes use bittorrent for timeshifting - which is really convenient. It's about time networks embrace P2P networks - and what they should do is host the torrents, embed ads in the downloads, DRM-free of course, and they can get some idea of ratings/popularity through tracker statistics. Granted, it would not be a perfect system but it would easily be as accurate as the old Nielsen rating system.

minor spoiler at the end of this post

The musical numbers in this one seem forced - yeah, it's the way it was intended, but it really comes across that way perhaps more so than they intended.

My favorite musical scene from Futurama is from "Hell is Other Robots" when Bender is in Robot Hell and Fry and Leela are descending into Robot Hell. My second favorite is from "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" (what was until recently the season finale).

I think the explanation to Seymour's being encased in dolomite was pretty funny.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way. It seems like they were trying to hard with the writing, and adding too many subplots to a movie that already has some complicated time-travel stuff going on seemed like a mistake.

They actually address that in the commentaries. They acknowledge the story is complex and you have to follow closely, but also that the following DVDs will not be so intense in that regard. This DVD was designed for hardcore fans who stop on frames to catch the more subtle jokes, watch it repeatedly to catch background jokes, and so forth.

    I thought it was fantastic.

That's what I was wondering. How can there be a speed of sound in a "medium" which does not have enough mass to transmit sound waves? I mean, I know there are sparsely-distributed particles even in "empty" interstellar space, but is the medium thick enough that there can even be a "speed of sound" associated with it? Can sound transmission in such a medium ever even be measured? I was curious and googled on desity of matter in space and found this:

    http://library.thinkquest.org/C0126626/fate/fate%20of%20universe.fate%20of%20universe.mass%20density%20of%20the%20universe.htm

The most obvious technique for discriminating between an open and a closed universe is to measure the average density of matter. The Friedmann equation describes the competition between the attractive gravitational force and the expansion of the universe. The gravitational attraction exerted at the center of an arbitrary sphere cut out of the universe is proportional to the average density of matter. The measured value of the Hubble constant (H) yields the kinetic energy of the expansion of the sphere. If the present density is below the critical value at which the expansion and gravitational attraction balance, gravity cannot halt the expansion, and the universe must be open. The critical density for closure of the universe is

    d critical = 3H2/8G = 5×10-30 gram cm-3

[sorry the equation got munched! -Kim]

where G is Newton's constant of gravitation. Another way to express this critical density is in the number density of atoms, which amounts to 3 x 10-6 atoms per cubic centimeter (cm-3), or only 3 atoms per cubic meter.

3 atoms per cubic meter is actually higher than I expected it would be given the immense (infinite? It certainly can't be definitively measured by any means we have, only theorised and later disproven) size of the Universe. Is 3 atoms per cubic meter enough to even have a "speed of sound" associated with it?
