They are fighting against counterfeit copies of Windows, so their use of the word is correct in a literal sense. This is not redefining a term. It sucks though, because they make it impossible (or difficult at least) for Linux users to download patches to take to client sites.

If you want to discuss redefining terms, how about discussing Microsoft's definition of downtime vs. the rest of the industry's definition of that term.

And I have rechargable alkalines that are six years old now. Their capacity is decreasing so it's time replace them (they've been recharged several hundred times) but I cannot find rechargable alkalines anywhere any more. :( I really liked rechargable alkalines - decent life, higher voltage than NiMH. I've thought about just recharging standard Energizer or Duracell alkalines (all mass-market alkalines are theoretically rechargable) but they're not designed to be charged, and are not vented, so . . .

So, I look for rechargable NiMH D-Cells (AA cells are readily available). Can't find them anywhere. Eveready advertises rechargable Energizer D-cells on their web site, but does Sprawl*Mart or Home Depot, etc. stock them? Of course not. But even if they did: 1.2V per cell vs. 1.5V.

No-Name/Off-brand Ni-Cd are readily available, but who the hell wants NiCd batteries?

I miss rechargable alkalines. Damn the Ray-o-Vac folks to Hell for discontinuing their environmentally-friendly rechargable alkaline batteries.

FWIW, I'd rip a DVD right in front of an MPAA rep. When he threatens to sue, I'd point at the interoperability clause in the DMCA, and point at the fair use clause in Copyright Law, as well as DVD advertisements which state that I OWN the DVD, along with various court precedents pertaining to the first sale doctrine. Providing I am not violating Copyright Law by distributing the content in violation of it, there isn't much they can do. There's not much they can do if I rip all of my DVDs to xvid to keep readily available on my HDD, and nothing they can do about my copying them to my PocketPC for mobile viewing.

Why fear the MPAA when merely exercising your rights?

Only a benefit if you're cheap or poor, or a programmer.

Not at all. Open Source benefits the users directly. Case in point: MCE can't write to MPEG4, because MS will never care about writing the feature. Obviously, someone around MythTV wanted this (honestly, essential) feature and wrote it in. MCE only has support for DRM formats. Open Source in this instance basically means you can play the movie you recorded on any computer. Obviously a benefit. A big one.

Another benefit: Open source pretty much guarantees your software will always be supported, at least minimally. When Vista comes out there is little chance ATI will release drivers for the AiW Radeon series, but with Gatos being merged into X.org the chances are fairly high that MythTV will eventually work with the AiW cards, and provide an upgrade path for Win2K and WinXP users. Ditto for various no-name USB tuner cards which are produced by fly-by-night vendors.

So, what you're saying is this: Windows XP is okay as long as you do not install Windows XP?

    (I kid, I kid)

Windows XP is ok. Here is what I dislike about Windows (XP and server alike):

      - You're pretty much stuck with the Explorer desktop
      - You HAVE to load the GUI
      - killing apps often do not die, whereas on *nix, kill -9 kills processes dead
      - multiuser-capable but disabled by Micro$oft (so if I want to connect to a remote machine, I disturb the existing session.)
      - WEAK shell (Cygwin makes Windows administration and automation tolerable)
      - explorer.exe as a file browser SUCKS. Konqueror is almost perfect.
      - Activation, Genuine Advantage, and constant phoning home (I bought a MSDN Universal subscription as a home user, and have subscribed at my office as well. I should not have to put up with Activation bullshit)
      - The installer sucks. It reminds me of Slackware circa 1994, only much, much less advanced.

Here is what I like about Windows:

      - hardware compatibility (pick anything ranging from a crap Bill & Ted's Excellent SIS board to a SuperMicro or Tyan Quad-processor board (dual in the case of XP) and Windows is supported and practically guaranteed to work.
      - The administration GUI is pretty good, but then again, it HAS to be because the CLI is so damned weak
      - Assigning processor affinity (if/when the need does arise is fairly easy, making working around certain race conditions in buggy drivers and/or apps fairly easy
      - You know, I cannot think of anything else about Windows that I actually like
