I find this rather ironic, since in the pilot episode of SG-1, the whole Stargate program had been mothballed and the facility was only being manned by a skeleton crew - until the Goa'uld decided to pay us a little visit. Hmmm... Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Yeah, it kind of makes me wonder at how long the mothballing of Cheyenne has been in the works, and who leaked it to the SG-1 writers. ;)

What about concept albums? Do you really want to buy just one track of Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, Dark Side of the Moon, The wall, and other records which are designed to be listened to straight through?

Take The Wall as an example: who on earth is going to buy the track "Stop" or "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" or "Outside the Wall?" I think out of six billion people, you might find a grand total of *pulls number from tush* three who might buy those tracks individually. Of course, if out-takes and live versions were offered, you'd find a good deal more, but none of the band is willing to authorise live recordings or outtakes they haven't already (Gilmour, Waters, and Mason are all pretty vocal about that) and express disdain for bootlegs since most of the bootlegs lack the polished quality of their officially released material. (I don't know if Pink Floyd's work is on iTunes, I run Linux therefore cannot access iTunes to check :( ).

For some works, offering them by individual tracks doesn't make sense - concept albums in particular.

  8. Re:LCD backlights will fade unevenly on Are Plasma TVs the Next BetaMax? · · Score: 4, Informative

FWIW, the half-life for plasma screens is now around 60,000, which is comparable to conventional CRT sets.

LCD backlights prohibitively expensive to replace? The fact is, they CAN be replaced, and aside from a few manufacturers who INSIST on gluing or epoxying the cases together, they are relatively easy to replace, and the tubes themselves cost anywhere from $2.00 to $30.00. Compare that to plasma, where to replace the screen you may as well just buy a whole new set (it's the equivalent of replacing a picture tube on a conventional television or monitor).

    Buy a set based on:
      - Response time
      - color purity
      - contrast ratio and black level
      - Image burn-in possibility (a potential issue for static displays and console gaming)

Until OLED sets become available, Plasma will win color purity and contrast ratio hands down. LCD will win for weight/ease of installation and possibly versatility.

Windows/AOL users who insist on TYPING IN ALL CAPS can keep their precious 'feature' for all I care - I'd rather skip such a user's post in entirety rather than read a couple of lines (thanks to the missing capslock) of drivel to discover that the user's post is not worth reading. Time is a precious resource, and with the ability to know at a mere glance that "WARNING: this idiot's post should be skipped" I will not have wasted two precious, precious seconds of my life discovering that yes, the user is an idiot. From that perspective, legacy CAPSLOCK functionality is something I hold dear to my heart.
