I'll be the first to say that there's really no good equivalent for some applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. For those you'll need a Windows box. However, the vast majority of people don't those applications.
You can always find alternatives to most computer applications and in many cases, the alternative while not being feature to feature identical are good enough for most people and in the case of Linux are usually free and well maintained.
For "Photoshop" the Gimp is pretty much identical and for "Illustraltor" you could use Inkscape . Of course, you will always get people who say "But it is not the same as [name your Windows-centric product here]" then it becomes rather pointless even attempting to point out the alternatives.
The major issue people are concerned about is that things will be built on top of systemd (and they have been built on top of systemd), and then you have a huge unrelated dependency on this init system which makes it hard to swap out in the future if you want to use containers.
I have been running Fedora before systemd (2010) was introduced and have never had an issue with it. I am now running Fedora 25 without any issues. Since my OS is on an SSD I can power up then login in then start my applications within less than one minute.
Just for you I started up my systemd configuration GUI and you can for "Units" and "User Units" see the following "Load State", "Active State", "Unit State" and "Unit". If I want I can "stat", "stop", "restart" and "reload" a unit as well as being able to "edit" and "isolate" a unit. There are plenty of other options available for you but I would suggest reading up on them.
Basically screwing up in systemd is pretty much the same as screwing up in an init system and instead of whinging about it, fix it.
If servers randomly do things behind your back or you restart one during a standard change and it doesn't come back up and your change window is between 1am - 3am (like my employer) you can be in hot water if you can't get it back up if something weird happens during a patch or other activity.
I would assume you would have raised a change request and had it signed by all parties before you even considered applying a change and/or rebooting a system?
In the case of a critical or even minor changes to any production machine an IT professional must consider the following:
1) Is this change a recommended one from the operating and/or application system vendor?
2) Has this change been tested and if so where and what was it tested on?
3) What is the projected time frame to make the change and if required reboot the system?
4) What are the pros and cons of this change?
5) What are the rollback procedures in case of unforeseen issues?
I could go on but by now you should realize that you are also protecting yourself in case the unforeseen happens. Making a change before getting permission is really asking to get fired.

It sounds like Microsoft is going to use Delta Updates which is kind of strange since Microsoft were one of the first companies to actually use this methodology in Windows XP. Forcing a 4GB update (as per article) is just plain lazy.

Unfortunately, some packages don't support deltas and Google Chrome (approx 40MB to 80MB) I am looking at you.
Note: Even though I do get allot of updates I rarely have conflicts and if I do I can just lock out the offending package or just don't update until the issue is fixed which on average is one or two days.
BTW. Debian supports optional debdelta but Ubuntu dropped this in 2011.

Ah! you've got me there. I think I would rather have an OS (ie. Linux and Unix) that you customize your updates across different platform groups that only takes a few minutes to setup although getting the change requests approvals may take a few days or weeks. It takes me less than an hour to install the latest version of Redhat from media or a few minutes across multiple (hundreds/thousands) platforms using Kickstart.
That kind of software that only runs under Win7.

Once someone opens a PDF in chrome on linux that memory usage increases a LOT and doesn't reduce when the tab is closed. The same goes with some other plugins. I've had a few people on 8GB go into swap until they close chrome but each time they may have had that instance of chrome running for a couple of months.

When I start Chrome my memory utilization goes from 2.3GB to 2.5GB
Start four tabs and open up some large (3 over 4MB PDF's - one was 35MB). Memory utilization now at 3.38GB.
Remove the four tabs that contain the PDF's. Memory utilzation now at 3.2GB and is still dropping but very slowly.
Close Chrome. Memory utilization drops to 2.36GB, which was where I started before firing up Chrome.
I do concure with what you said but I normally close my browser when I have no use for it. Of course other people may prefer to leave their browser up and all tabs open but since it only takes me about a second to start Chrome, approx two for Firefox, a secod for QupZilla and a second for Konqeror I don't care. SSD's on a SATA 3 bus are really quite fast.
I rarely use my Chrome browser to open up PDF's prefering Ocular or any of the other image viewers I have installed on my system such as Geeqie, Gwenview or E-Book Viewer. I can even use The Gimp if I want although I don't.
If I am not using an applicaion I normally close it although there are some applications I always have runing. Since I have been using virtual desktops (my default is four) for well over twenty years I could leave multiple instances of browsers or applicaions up but I do prefer clean desktops. In fact the only icon I have on my desktop is the trashcan. For favourites I have a auto hiding bar and of course my Favorites tab in my application launcher.
This is why I like Linux. If you are a messy worker you can be messy, if you prefer neet you can be that too, but whatever customisations, layouts and styles you are comfortable with, you are in control.
Chrome, the current Firefox and a few others are designed with the assumption that memory usage is not a real issue while speed is - hence all that stuff in tabs being kept in memory. Yes it sucks if you want to use anything other than their application at the same time or have an older machine with less memory than the maxed out dev machines, but those developers do not care about such a situation.
The answer is an older version or a project that has a goal of a low memory footprint.
Having 16GB of DDR4 memory is great except I rarely exceed 4GB of usage even with multiple web browsers and tabs. Most of the time I use Chrome and my overall memory utilization (includes system applications as well) is around 1.5GB to 3GB. Just for your edification, I opened 20 tabs in Chrome and my memory utilization jumped from 2GB to 3GB. Maybe you are running Chrome on the wrong operating system.
BTW. I run Fedora 24 and on login I automatically run Konsole (six shells) , Dolphin, Ktorrent, System monitor and VLC. I actually am running a video at the moment as well as the twenty tabs in Chrome and I have barely gone over 3GB in memory. Of course having a Skylake Core i7 6700 (not into overclocking hence I never bothered with the "K" model) does help.
Point me to the version of Edge I can install from the Debian repos.... Yeah, not a contender.
Can't find the Edge browser in Fedora or Mint repos so I will have to make do with Chrome, Firefox, QupZilla and Konqueror not to mention the other web browsers I can install in a few minutes if I feel like it.
The newest version of Chrome is garbage. Crash city. I had to go back to Firefox.
I am running version 54.0.2840.71 (latest as far as Fedora 24 is concerned) and don't have any problems. Maybe it's the operating system you are running it on.

Writing a virus for any operating system is fairly easy and no operating system is safe. In most cases, viruses are propagated with the user's consent or ignorance, although crackers commonly use what is called social engineering to achieve their ends.

BTW. Please don't think I am hating on Mac OS which is a BSD Unix derivative because I am not. BSD Unix was the first Unix operating I worked on over 35 years ago. Even then we knew that you never worked as root . With "sudo" we never allowed user root privilege since an attacker only needed to compromise the user who had this so all activity that required root required the user to also know the root password.

These days I do virtual machines. Cygwin provides no value if you need to run modern apps bugfree. Same with Linux guys who do wine. If you need to run Windows than do it in a vm

If I wish to use "apt-get" I would install a Debian-based distribution either native or in a virtual machine. If I wish to use "dnf" I would install a Redhat based distribution either native or in a virtual machine. It normally takes me about an hour to install a fully customized distribution.
Personally, for home use I prefer the native approach for Linux and virtual machines for other distribution that I wish to test and/or evaluate, however for Windows I do use a vinegar based solution to clean them and they do come up sparkling clean. Of course, you may have to use a little elbow grease to get rid of bug splatters and bird droppings.

It takes me less than an hour to install the latest version of Redhat from media or a few minutes across multiple (hundreds/thousands) platforms using Kickstart.
That kind of software that only runs under Win7.
So according to Microsoft, you like running your software on an obsolete operating system?
Once someone opens a PDF in chrome on linux that memory usage increases a LOT and doesn't reduce when the tab is closed. The same goes with some other plugins. I've had a few people on 8GB go into swap until they close chrome but each time they may have had that instance of chrome running for a couple of months.
I am using the QupZilla browser to reply to you on this.
When I start Chrome my memory utilization goes from 2.3GB to 2.5GB
Start four tabs and open up some large (3 over 4MB PDF's - one was 35MB). Memory utilization now at 3.38GB.
Remove the four tabs that contain the PDF's. Memory utilzation now at 3.2GB and is still dropping but very slowly.
Close Chrome. Memory utilization drops to 2.36GB, which was where I started before firing up Chrome.
I do concure with what you said but I normally close my browser when I have no use for it. Of course other people may prefer to leave their browser up and all tabs open but since it only takes me about a second to start Chrome, approx two for Firefox, a secod for QupZilla and a second for Konqeror I don't care. SSD's on a SATA 3 bus are really quite fast.
I rarely use my Chrome browser to open up PDF's prefering Ocular or any of the other image viewers I have installed on my system such as Geeqie, Gwenview or E-Book Viewer. I can even use The Gimp if I want although I don't.
If I am not using an applicaion I normally close it although there are some applications I always have runing. Since I have been using virtual desktops (my default is four) for well over twenty years I could leave multiple instances of browsers or applicaions up but I do prefer clean desktops. In fact the only icon I have on my desktop is the trashcan. For favourites I have a auto hiding bar and of course my Favorites tab in my application launcher.
This is why I like Linux. If you are a messy worker you can be messy, if you prefer neet you can be that too, but whatever customisations, layouts and styles you are comfortable with, you are in control.
Chrome, the current Firefox and a few others are designed with the assumption that memory usage is not a real issue while speed is - hence all that stuff in tabs being kept in memory. Yes it sucks if you want to use anything other than their application at the same time or have an older machine with less memory than the maxed out dev machines, but those developers do not care about such a situation. The answer is an older version or a project that has a goal of a low memory footprint.
Having 16GB of DDR4 memory is great except I rarely exceed 4GB of usage even with multiple web browsers and tabs. Most of the time I use Chrome and my overall memory utilization (includes system applications as well) is around 1.5GB to 3GB. Just for your edification, I opened 20 tabs in Chrome and my memory utilization jumped from 2GB to 3GB. Maybe you are running Chrome on the wrong operating system.
BTW. I run Fedora 24 and on login I automatically run Konsole (six shells) , Dolphin, Ktorrent, System monitor and VLC. I actually am running a video at the moment as well as the twenty tabs in Chrome and I have barely gone over 3GB in memory. Of course having a Skylake Core i7 6700 (not into overclocking hence I never bothered with the "K" model) does help.
Point me to the version of Edge I can install from the Debian repos.... Yeah, not a contender.
Can't find the Edge browser in Fedora or Mint repos so I will have to make do with Chrome, Firefox, QupZilla and Konqueror not to mention the other web browsers I can install in a few minutes if I feel like it.
The newest version of Chrome is garbage. Crash city. I had to go back to Firefox.
I am running version 54.0.2840.71 (latest as far as Fedora 24 is concerned) and don't have any problems. Maybe it's the operating system you are running it on.

Well, I don't think he has anything to worry about since "Hacking" is not a crime and if it is made into one then I think that will be rather difficult to enforce since you would have to lock up most of the population of this planet. Now "Cracking" (think safe cracker) is a different matter.
IT writers, popular press and especially Holywood have been getting the definition of "hacker" wrong for over 25 years.
Even Wikipedia has got it wrong (from an older school perspective) in their initial definition of the word Hacker although if you read further the article does mention the historical difference between the words "hacker" and "cracker". Ah! the power of the ill-informed media.
Repeat after me "A computer hacker is someone who writes and modifies computer code. A computer cracker is someone who illegally breaks into computer systems". As an example, a hacker can write and modify computer code for nefarious purposes but it is only when that code is used for illegal purposes then the person who uses it becomes what is called a "black hat hacker", "script kiddy" or more accurately a "cracker".
Not convinced? How about downloading Wireshark . It's free and it is an excellent network checker. Run Wireshark in the confinement of your home and you are effectively hacking your own network by capturing and analyzing all packets. Run Wireshark outside your own home without permission (written is best) and you could be in trouble for trying to crack any networks that your PC can see.

Excuse me. That's not less (self-replicating) Viruses. That's none. Zero. Zip. Nada. For the entire sixteen years of OS X. Not one "Virus" on OS X (macOS) that can propagate without the User's knowledge and consent.
Writing a virus for any operating system is fairly easy and no operating system is safe. In most cases, viruses are propagated with the user's consent or ignorance, although crackers commonly use what is called social engineering to achieve their ends.
A simple web search will prove you wrong "OS X viruses". I get over three million hits.
BTW. Please don't think I am hating on Mac OS which is a BSD Unix derivative because I am not. BSD Unix was the first Unix operating I worked on over 35 years ago. Even then we knew that you never worked as root . With "sudo" we never allowed user root privilege since an attacker only needed to compromise the user who had this so all activity that required root required the user to also know the root password.
I think one of the main reasons is lower apple market share means less virus writers. Also windows has to support a lot of legacy crap which creates vulnerabilities.
That is big talk from someone (ostensibly) using an OS (Linux) with many times more malware than OS X/macOS has had (there isn't even a Wikipedia Article for OS X Malware!) in its sixteen-year history, but with far less marketshare. Kinda blows the "Security through Obsurity" meme out of the water, doesn't it?

Windows 10 is an Open operating system. Open to viruses and Malware . Wait I take that back Windows 10 meets the very definition of malware and a software virus.
Office Open XML is so open that there's 6000+ pages of documentation explaining how everything works. I don't see 6000 pages explaining how OpenOffice formats work. See how open Microsoft is being here. It must be open if they produced so much documentation.

The best way to obscure information is to embed it in massive amounts of documentation. You can even go one better if you wrap your information in legalese or cite particular relationships that don't exist in the documentation or are vague references. Another trick to obscure information is to make sure it is vague or chatty and if you are sneaky, display the writings in a sans-serif font (fine for magazine captions) such that the reader's eyes start to glaze over after the first sentence.

The console window for the start menu item "Bash on Ubuntu on Windows" (terrible naming by the way) is already in quick edit mode, you don't need to right click the titlebar.

Can you apt-get install to run any binary? I hate cygwin with a passion.
These days I do virtual machines. Cygwin provides no value if you need to run modern apps bugfree. Same with Linux guys who do wine. If you need to run Windows than do it in a vm
Why would you want to use a Debian base package maintainer in Cygwin it has it's own installer/maintainer?
If I wish to use "apt-get" I would install a Debian-based distribution either native or in a virtual machine. If I wish to use "dnf" I would install a Redhat based distribution either native or in a virtual machine. It normally takes me about an hour to install a fully customized distribution.
Personally, for home use I prefer the native approach for Linux and virtual machines for other distribution that I wish to test and/or evaluate, however for Windows I do use a vinegar based solution to clean them and they do come up sparkling clean. Of course, you may have to use a little elbow grease to get rid of bug splatters and bird droppings.
