But wouldn't the column of air above the scale in the one region be a different weight than the other? That means that the starting '0' displayed on the scale would be different - thereby giving a false starting point to begin with. IOW if the scale were empty in one region it would disply '0' then when they took it to the other region - without any adjustments - when it had nothing on it, it would not display a '0' correct?
Say I'm working at the DARPA, and
somebody puts a code on my desk, somethin' no one else
can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break
it. And I'm real happy with myself, cus' I did my job
well. But maybe that code was the location of some
rebel army in......North Africa or the Middle East and once they have
that location, they bomb the village where the rebels are
hiding... Fifteen hundred people that I never met, never
had no problem with get killed. Now the politicians are
sayin', "Oh, Send in the marines to secure the area" cus'
they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there,
gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number
got called, cus' they were off pullin' a tour in the National
Guard. It'll be some kid from Southie over there takin'
shrapnel in the ass. He comes back to find that the plant
he used to work at got exported to the country he just
got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his
ass got his old job, cus' he'll work for fifteen cents a day
and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile he realizes the only
reason he was over there in the first place was so that
we could install a government that would sell us oil at a
good price. And of course the oil companies used the
little skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices.
A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't
helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. They're takin'
their sweet time bringin' the oil back, of course, maybe
even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who
likes to drink martinis and fuckin' play slalom with the
icebergs, it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil
and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now
my buddy's out of work. He can't afford to drive, so
he's walking to the fuckin' job interviews, which sucks
because the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic
hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin' cus' every
time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate
special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with
Quaker State. So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for
somethin' better. I figure fuck it, while I'm at it why not
just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his sworn
enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby
seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I
could be elected President.
Yeah but it is obvious to you that Germany were the bad guys right? When I look at WW2 all I see is a Germany trying to do to Europe what Europe did to the rest of the world in the preceding centuries. I mean Britain enslaved people, forced its religion, language and culture on them had concentration campus - Germany tried to do the same and became the bad guys. America tries to control the world and impose its will through financial institutions and political and trade pressures but when someone else does it by whatever means they have necessary then they are terrorists all of a sudden. Don't get me wrong I am not saying that they are not bad - I am saying that we all are! No one can claim purely clean hands in this world. It is just whoever you can convince to buy your story more than others.
Does "not believing" bring baggage with it and can I have the right to discount atheism on grounds of the baggage?
My feeling is that we all have baggage - it is the human condition. I was born in South Africa during the apratheid days and I never ever whipped a black man or did anything overtly racists (subtly - I wonder). But when I started to get invoved with non-whites there was an attitude toward me that I felt I didn't deserver - but then I figured out that it was 1 000 000 time bitten - very shy.
I guess religion is like that.
People know more about what christians are AGAINST than what they are ABOUT.
And usually they seem to be against most liberal lifestyles and laws.
but hey no one is perfect we are all just trying to figure it out as we go right? I know I am.
The summary said that they had banned all contributions from a certain IP adress right?
Then someone replied by saying that they can post anonymously, so I thought "hey they can pretend to be who they like but their IP address would still be the same."
So I thought I would ask the poster to have another look at the summary and see if they "banned an IP address or username."
But then I thought that maybe "anonymously" meant some kind of IP spoofing and became intrigued.
Now OBVIOUSLY you would do it differently and that's fine - more strength to you - but wow the amount of energy and anger and discontentment aimed at my response is amazing.
Was it really that bad? Drawing attention to the IPAddress vs Username block specifically with regards to "anonymity"?
Wow - I almost feel like apologising - almost!
Excellent response!
Bravo!
Of course I wonder why I was marked as flaimbait? I wasn't trying to start a war of any kind just trying to point the poster's attention to the fact that it was not a username that was being blocked but an IP adress. But then I thought - hey I don't know everything about everything - so maybe I am missing something - perhaps if I draw attention to this then an interesting convesation will start and someone will show me what I have missed.
I am humble like that.
But hey, you have a fantastic weekend.:)
For me truth is not about numbers. Once upon a time only a few people beilived that the Sun was the centre of the solar system.
Does that mean that truth is relative?
Surely it cannot be - there is either a God or there is not.
I believe there is and you disagree - I believe that you are wrong. I do not think that I am better than you or feel that I can order your lifestyle to conform to my beliefs - to a point. what if your beliefs ordered child sacrifice - should I say something? I believe so - but then I am imposing my belief on you.
Who determines true value?
Absolutely right.
After a life spent searching and questioning, I came to the conclusion that I was a created being - controversial yes - but this was my truth.
No I was not brought up to believe it.
No I am not insane or on psychiatric medication.
No I am no scared and need a "crutch".
I honestly belive this with all my heart.
And if it is true then how do I engage this creator?
What is he / she / it like or about?
So yes there is more than just blindly following something and obeying some rules.
I consider myself a seeker of truth and as such I listen more to the quiet voice of reason and deduction inside me than to the screaming voices of judgement and criticism.
Having said that I am also very open to the voices of reasonable dissent as long as their motives are to understand and help and not just to condemn and mock.
The term "christian" is interesting in its use here.
For example, I am a christian but I do not go to church or have my name on
any memberships of any kind. I spend some time studying the teachings of Christ and try and work out what he
meant and how to apply it to modern life.
I read Paul's letters and the old testament as well (yes even all the contraversial parts) and try to understand what I am to learn from this.
How much is literal and applicable to today and how much is not.
I consider things like abortion, gay marriage, other religions etc and try and align that to the teachnigs of Christ - the deeper teachings that it - to try and understand how to assimilate these issues (and others) into my world view and value system.
At no point do I carry banners, march, judge or condescend.
But then I know that I would for things like child abuse - but would I for capital punishment?
And if I would do it for child abuse - then what is driving my value system?
In medievil times it is reported that some European kings liked the "company" of young boys - if I was alive at that time would I have protested? What is driving my values now - and how do I know I am right and not just "seasonal"? Which values are ALWAYS right regardless of date and time and who decides this?
So when the word "christian" is thrown around with contempt I know that is aimed at the institutionailsed members and radicals but also - I suppose - at anyone who believes in invisible fairies:)
It seems to me that many organisations would consider payroll, health and other HR info as private and hence restrict access to it on the network, but they wouldn't consider encrypting it with a passowrd - well at least nowhere where I have worked.
And perhaps military institutions consider attack plans, weapons secrets and such as worthy of protection but not an "inteview" that we did "ourselves", "inhouse".
We are learning more and more that this is a connected world - yes even your fridge will have an IP address and be on the net one day mark my words and EVERYTHING will need to be encrypted. Encryption grammar and other security verbiage will be second hand speak for moms and kids...
"have you packed your lunch"
"Yes mom"
"And MD5 SSL'd your homework via the kerebos LDAP certificate server? You know what happened last time when Mr Jones found your SSH key unencoded on the SELinux partition - I don't want to go through that again"
"Arghh yes mom I have been over this 1000 times with you let it go - my friends and I were scanning photons of the prom dance when James accidentally Bluetoothed a letter from his brother in the army to Amy's communication jewellery which had a compaible 3DES encrytpion algorithm - now will you let it go!? Shees!"
"I'm just saying is all - I have to go and buy some groceries and when I scan my embedded subcutaneous barcode it better not say that I have been SQL Injected because of a bad CRC checksum - I won't be embarrassed like I was the last time"
Wow that was quite an open and honest confession you just laid out there.
I am glad that you have found help within the church. I can tell you from experience that if you spend time in prayer and meditation, God's Holy Spirit will work with you to achieve a healing in your iife. Peace comes through the knowledge of God - the more you learn about him the more peace you will find.
Be strong in the Lord and meek in his strength.
How do you know a corpse can't hear?
Does the tympanic membrance still vibrate in a corpse? If so does this mean that the ear has registered the sound?
Does the absence of - measureable - brain waves or other responses to auditory stimuli automatically mean that it is not registering?
Hmmm... I wonder...
Just so I understand, hasn't anyone been able to buy / build a model aeroplane for the past few decades and possibly attach a camera or weapons to it? The only difference now is that they can go a little further - I guess.
Hmmm... good point but I think that the shareholders are like "who cares - where my ROI? If we were a university then that would mean something to us but we are a commercial entity.
You gotta spend money to make money that is just the way it is.
Also, Apple has no where NEAR the the service/product offering that MS have.
There are overlaps in their target audiences but there are also major variations.
Hmmm... yes these are some good points.
So over here we say "cisco rowter" as opposed to "cisco rooter" [router].
We also say "deeb-eye-an" as opposed to "deeb-i-in" [debian].
Soo-zee as opposed to Soo-zuh [Suse]
Dee-min as opposed to Day-mon [Daemon]
Ah and two of my personal favourites:
This same guy I mentioned above will correct you if you don't say the WHOLE name.
eg: Postgres - he will correct you and say postgresQL
OpenOffice - he will insist on OpenOffice.org
and so forth
I agree - I too will prejudge a person based solely on their use of colloquialisms etc. I once had a friend who said that anyone who used the term "sequel" as opposed to spelling out the letters "S-Q-L" knew nothing about databases!!!!!!!

Hey that is a good point - I have never thought of that myself.
How can you tell what your bot community is doing? Is there a way to tell?
What about SETI? Is that a botnet? How do we know what it is doing with all out free CPU cycles - maybe it is a government conspiracy to... wait wait only kidding.
I hear what you are saying - but what is the business model? IIRC Borland tried to sell commercial Linux apps without success. That's quite interesting considering that his company is in the business of making and promoting the 'medium' - independent of the 'message'.
