I wasn't aware that Stephen Moffat wrote blink - it's an absolutely fantastic episode and one of my favorites to date. I was a little concerned at Russell T. Davies' departure but this fact + watching the episode (which wasn't half bad) gives me some faith.

  5. Re:Big Battle on Bing To Become Default iPhone Search? · · Score: 1

Umm the reason Bing has been gaining marketshare is that since it's release, absolutely any possible setting or search asset under Microsoft's control has been defaulted to Bing. Example: ninemsn.com.au (aus MSN site.. which just timed out), all the search bars in I.E., etc. Since i took that first look at bing i've basically given up and not specifically attempted to navigate to it since, and even so i've still stumbled across it 10 or so times.

Bing is not gaining market share because it's any "better" than Google, or because people like it more. It's gaining market share because of the same reason IE gained so much market share: because it's the default option.

That's only $22 a month on a 24-month contract. Often that's around the same price as the handset repayment, so what's the difference? (This is in Australia though). Generally the higher $ plans have the handset for "free" - but I assume this is the only level at which they can justify subsidizing the handset to be free from the extra $$$ they are making. I'm on a pre-paid plan and having done the math it worked out only a few dollars more a month to buy the phone outright, be on the flexibility of a pre-paid plan with similar $$$ and data and not a contract.

To Motorola, to get Android this type of attention. They advertised the Droid on their homepage, and I think that must have just about been the first time that any product had been advertised on their home page. Buy your phone outright. Then you can do whatever the hell you want with it. I've done this with my last 2 phones (Nokia N93i and Android Dev Phone 1) and haven't had any problems. The only problem is that it is a large upfront cost ($830 and $650 respectively for me), but the costs work out to be almost the same if you divide it by the standard 2-year contract plus handset repayments. I managed to front up the money as the typical struggling university student in both occasions, i can't see why anybody else couldn't.

I feel like Google's had to shoot themselves in the foot a little to gain the attention they wanted for Android. The HTC Dream was the first "flagship" android phone and I think they deliberately chose a different carrier (Motorola) for the flagship 2.0 so that HTC was not just the only manufacturer throwing dollars at Android.
I wonder which company will have the flagship phone for the next version of Android?

Do they really expect to be able to review all 80,000 + iPhone apps, 10,000+ Android apps, and everything else in every other app store? What are they going to do, attempt to pull every app until each one is reviewed? This sounds like some 60 year old executive finally upgraded his aging Nokia to an iPhone and thought it a good idea.
These apps are digital downloads from (generally) overseas sources, I'm sure there are plenty of programs you can download from the vastness that is the internet that contains content that people would object to. Do they review them? No.
And I know not of Stephen Conroy's involvement in this, but he's already under enough fire from the proposed Internet Filtering Scheme. Give it a rest!

I'm somewhat of an Android-handset nerd, so I have been following a few recently.
This has the advantage of being perhaps the second QWERTY phone since HTC Dream/Dev Phone, but..
It doesn't look very good to me. Just seems to be missing the "slick" sort of interface RAZR has.
I see what they are trying to do (MOTOBLUR being like HTC's Sense UI), but it just looks like a less nice version of Hero's Interface, and the handset sort of looks chunky/ugly and the T-Mobile and Motorola logo seems like one too many to me.
The backup stuff (All contacts, log-in information, home screen customizations, e-mail and social network messages are backed up on the MOTOBLUR secure server) seems nice but, I seem to already have all of this apart from Home Screen customizations on my Dev Phone (Contacts, Emails all synced with Gmail).

Seems like it has both a D-Pad and trackball, which is good. The track ball being on the left is probably a bad idea, as anyone with a HTC Dream will know that its placed in a good position to quickly scroll and type (albeit; the track ball being hard to use and mostly useless anyway).

Anyway, the only reason i'd buy this over a HTC Hero (/Sense UI) is the QWERTY. I'll be keeping an eye out for the DEXT (and the Motorola Sholes which has rumors floating around about it being the flagship phone for the Android 2.0 release). Still waiting for a good looking QWERTY phone to replace my ugly Dev Phone (but if these images of Sholes are real, Motorola will have my attention: http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/30/motorola-sholes-android-phone-headed-for-verizon/)
