Apple hypes the crap out of their products. They create a complete product from A to Z. They support the product and even distribute and manufacture the product. Lastly, they released it _earlier_ than everyone else.

Google what did they actually do? just wrote an OS (actually bought the OS and renamed it and changed it a bit) and they did that much slower than it took for Apple to do all those aforementioned things.

From the shear reputation that Google has a bunch of nothing brands (like HTC) jumped on the tidal wave "that is" Google, used Google's reputation to sell their devices. The main difference being Google had other companies do the leg work Apple chose to do themselves. As a result Google is now beating Apple in market share.

    Several issues here.

    - Apple controls its distribution. So it's not by accident that 10 different vendors wont/cant sell iOS. Is it fear of rejection to do so? or the ability to control its product offering to maintain its up sell/value add reach? (another argument for another day)
    - iPhone for a long time was the only smartphone option and now its not as the competition has moved in. Not to say it took them long enough but it's always been the case that Apple has had the limelight on certain product offerings until competition knocks on the door.
    - Dell purchases its parts from many different vendors, making them the reseller as well. Apple does the same thing and tries and tinker with the vendor / reseller model. As such it works to a certain point.

Google's philosophy to beat Apple's at its game is too "divide and conquer". This report stipulates that their strategy is working. Bragging about it is fine by me, its good to see a well ployed strategy knock a potential monopolistic business model around a bit. It keeps Apple in their place in my mind.

A $35 laptop is VERY possible and can hold the same quality as a shiny Apple iPad when you break it down into units. India is a great place for this to begin simply from the fact their manufacturing costs will be low but _they_ still walk away with a sizable profit.

Apple is just like every other "Reseller" not vendor RESELLER. They take bits from everywhere else at a massive unit rate, assemble it in sweatshops like Foxconn for nothing, ship and sell it a with a massive markup with govt taxes and all. How do you think Apple made it successful? it certainly wasn't by offering their technology at a fair prices

The only successful vendor to do this (i can only thing of one) is Microsoft and they got away with selling their components at stupid prices. Windows could of been sold at $20 a pop and Microsoft would of been the size of every other vendor out there, nope sell it for the maximum and become a giant.

Apple's done that on the manufacturing and reseller front. Take the Dell approach of sales and milk it 2x 3x what they did, splash a bit of marketing into the mix and *BOOM* a winning formula for an IT giant.

The problem is its like the same problem the American Military has, show these 3rd world countries how to do war then they start taking shots at the people who taught them in the 1st place. Developing nations are now doing the same with IT and they'll undercut the crap out of their American mentors.

The mail tools in the iPad are good, maps are okay and so is the diary but these things are on my iPhone and doing it on the iPad is redundant for me.

Its YouTube tool is okay mainly from the perspective that you're watching HD on a cool little 1cm thick TV screen but again back to the simple ability to find what you're looking for. No latest uploads, no order by most viewed, nothing usable is present so to pinpoint what you're really after in the YouTube app is next to impossible.

Since it's all locked down until Apple gets it's finger out to fix these problems no one else will write these features. Maybe Opera will come to iPad but that'll take months and their attempts at writing a browser for iGadgets have sucked so far.

The list of problems for the iPad are long and will take years for Apple to get right, everything from the 'lack' of application support, lack of ebook support, and lack of device connectivity, it really wont be hard for these other devices to overtake them in coming months.

I like the iPad, its cool cause i can browse the web while I'm on the toilet, thank you Steve Jobs for creating a tool i can use while i take a crap. It's great to use for presentations because everyone just wants to touch it "Oh you have iPad, let me play" but other than that it's advantages are far and few.

HTML5 isn't going to impose a solution to this, if anything we are years away from seeing any of these shortcomings you speak of disappear. HTML5 is a good concept and too see it flourish is going to be pinnacle to my work, but alas I'm a cynic and lost faith with standards and compliance years ago (not that I'll ever make a website that _isn't_ strict complaint) but my iPad is a perfect example of how everything still wont render friendly. It mulls up font-types and screws up javascript code and every now and then. Now with each browser competing to be "more compliant" than its competitor, it gives the excuse to developers to worry about less and implementing less backward compatibility.

Not something I'm afraid of, I get to make up for it in all the billable hours on fixing broken websites. But it's falls in the same computing issues the world has seen time and time again, security and legacy working to destroy whats new (or vice-versa). What needs to happen is we need a more abstract approach to this legacy trump and put some sort of middleware on the web servers that can solve these issues for developers and track this standards garble the browsers play at.

My Dad who was a mechanic with no real great qualifications who lived in a small terrace house as a child with limited tools and next to no experience built two houses in his life.

The first was a 2nd story home with timber walls and a tin roof, it followed building code and was fine to live in for over 10 years. The second one he built was a double brick with gyprock, roof tiles, steal framing. The brick one survived a hurricane, meanwhile the wooden home still stands on a 100 acre farm in the middle of nowhere, this has been the case for the last 20 to 30 years.

Building houses is hard for idiots that get screwed over by labors and have next to no clue what they are doing and should just go off and buy home rather then _trying_ to build one.

Just because most "civilized" people haven't the basic god blessed skills we had for the last 10,000 years doesn't mean we are all like that.

Okay, please tell me exactly what is so much better about Apple products? I've used various technologies over the years and Apple's products are good but I can't really see this "massive" benefit everyone talks about.

As for shininess my new Toshiba looks just as sexy as any Mac (actually it gets more comments from people in the office over any Mac). Just about anything brand new these days if you spend the same amount of money as you would on an Apple product usually looks just as physically good. Feature wise Apple products have always had less features with the express philosophy that the features they bring to the table are more refined. Now, If you went back 10 years granted Apple was quite original but now the more technology grows Apple goes down the same vein as it's competitors and the more they become alike. The software, well okay it runs UNIX and to me this is always good but to say that Windows 7 is a poor operating system as much as it pains me to say it Microsoft has got it right for a change. My Toshiba laptop with touchscreen (pen also) works really well, my laptop has never been slow and it does everything the top of a line Apple does and just as seamlessly (in many cases much better).

It took me until the last 3 months to go out and get myself an iPhone. When I was first exposed to them I thought some of the things it brought to the table were good but it wasn't until I needed a new phone did I actually make the decision to get one. I think that's how a lot of people shop when it comes to phones because I don't see people regularly spending a marginal amount of money on something as "unimportant" to their daily lives as phone handset (it's really a luxury item). Unless the company you work for opts up to buy you a new phone the only real time the average person purchases a new phone is when their plan is up and the chance to grab a current handset is offered too them.

Their uniqueness put them this far ahead of their competitors but I don't think they are that unique anymore as the speed of which competing Tablet's are being created and released into the market is a fine example of this as we are expected to see nearly 50 brands of Tablets hit the market within the next 6 months. If anything its simply brand awareness now and I think that's why they keep at it with all this hype. They are sticking to what works well to sell their products and not really about the quality of the product because Apple knows how prominent they are and they know all too well which one they have to push. It's "product quality" vs "marketability" and I think marketability is now cheaper for them and easier.
