It ought to be possible ( using PGP ) to have the vote counters return to you a code that is your vote encrypted. Only you can decrypt it. If it is not correct, you can go public.
Wow, mods are touchy today.
The human mind congeals around age 30 I've talked over that very subject with several friends, and it appears to be true. As one of them said, "When I was 20, I looked back on what I had believed when I was 15, and it was stupid. When I was 25, I looked back on what I had believed when I had been 15 and when I had been 20. Same thing. When I was 30, I had changed some more, and I looked back on what I had believed when I had been 15, 20, and 25, and it was all crap. When I was 35, I looked back on what I believed when I was 30, and I still pretty much agreed with it."
The human mind congeals around age 30 wow. thats quite a premise to just tuck into your conclusion without backing it up. kudos. you get todays dogmatism award. If you are a bit over 30 and a moderately good observer, it's not dogmatism, it's not a premise, it's an obvious truth.
BTW, how old are you?
if nobody "owns" software, is it subject to tragedy of the commons?
There are probably arguments either way, but because software isn't a scarce commodity I don't know how that old idea applies. Wow! This must be a first on slashdot. Usually the poster expresses an opinion without sufficient facts. But P has all the facts and is unwilling to commit to an opinion.
So I'll do it for him: by definition, the tragedy of the commons is caused by one party using a scarce resource. If there is no scarcity, there is no tragedy.
Are we humans a benefit to the universe, as TFA suggests, or are we a detriment? Each point of view will certainly be represented in the posts that follow. FWIW, I think we are a benefit.
For those who think that we are detrimental to the universe, I suggest that the only logical thing to do is to kill yourself. Now. For the good of the universe.
Quit reading; do it now. Thank you.
The track records of the two governments matters more: theirs is getting more respectful of its citizens, ours is getting more totalitarian. They seem to be prepared to pass each other going in opposite directions.
But that is still a long ways off, so I'm betting on the US getting there first.
I was under the impression that the price at which a product was advertised was the price at which it must be sold? Almost. They must honor all but mistakes and vandalism. If they make an honest mistake ( and sometimes a judge has to decide whaether or not it is an honest mistake ) they do not have to honor it. Nor do they have to if someone alters their pricing for them.
"Are we no longer allowed to have any secrets, even on our own systems?"
Why do you even have to ask? As private citizens we arent allowed to hide anything from the government. Its labeled as obstruction of justice and we get tossed in the can if we don't cough up the keys. Of course, if you use stegography, the whole issue of keys is moot. Store all your data as the least significant bit in photos - particularly photos that you have modified as art. They can subpeona your artistic porn collection. But they can't prove that there even is any encryption.
Really now, does every profession need it's own appreciation day Yes. It's called payday. So do the job, cash the check, and if you feel under appreciated, look for a better job.
Appreciation days are for volunteers. ( With that thought in mind, I'd like to thank the folks who did Fedora, Ubuntu, Firefox, OPen Office, and all the other open programs that I use daily )
...having "sex" in SecondLife, or any other game, is already pointless. That you would even call it sex, and not at least "sex," is very sad. This is a troll??? Oftopic, maybe...
Ok, mods, time to get out of mom's basement and meet real women. ( or real guys if that's your preference )
But quit modding parent troll for speaking an obvious truth.
Who modded parent 'troll'??? He/she is right: NASA didn't understand publicity too well when they acted like the shuttle was safe enough for a teacher and then they killed her. Now NASA is learning how to do publicity. And in the long run that may be the most important thing because good publicity means more funding.

What is bizarre is that slashdot does not have a comment-editing feature.
TFA said 180 meters**2 of livable space. I have no intuitive feel for that, so I did some quick conversion: that's about three 18-wheeler trailers.
I already produce gas from bacteria. Move on, nothing new here.
...yeah, but I don't have to be accurate on slashdot.

There were 25 viruses. How does something catch six percent? Eight or four, sure. But six?
"...know if I have lung cancer..."
TFA didn't mention cancer, either as something that counld be detected or as something that could not. Anybody know???
I think you mean a RED screen of death...
I won't object to it as long as I can recored the location and activities of the cops, and store that indefinitely
And covered with snow.
It's not dead, it's just pining for a better battery.

And even when they do build one they will be turning their crank in public.
