...and let us not forget the value of being able to personalise the ads as easily as facebook could allow for (they can arguably know you better than you do if you fill in enough of that info section). Targeted ads are worth far more than non-targeted, for obvious reasons.
Good, it's not extended. Bad, it was too long anyway. I read an article (here) that said the optimum length is ~14 years!
IMO, it should be life of the author and that's it. Oh, and it should also be non-transferable---stop (most) record companies forcing the songwriters to give up the rights to their own songs in their contracts...
Why are wasting our time with a bunch of delusional cultists? Because there are a lot of powerful people associated with the organisation, they have a lot of money, and probably a fair amount of political leverage. So no matter how inconceivable it is to us that anyone can take their beliefs seriously, their 'religion' can make them dangerous to our values and society.
What a difference a couple of months of good press for Blu-ray makes Like what?
More likely, it's due to a couple of bad weeks for HD-DVD (security keeps getting cracked). That'd be more motivation for keeping to the other one if I was an idiot executive. Who cares if one gives a better quality video? One of them is still capable of manipulating our customers^W^W^W protecting our content.
I'd move towards the ~66 characters per line first (it's about the
right width to make scanning back easy enough not to lose your
place---LaTeX users will be familiar with this already). You might
find you don't need the line shading after that.
In fact, this mostly tends to be the cause of any trouble that I
have reading stuff on the web. That, and the text is too small.
Fortunately, one can kill both with one stone; increasing the
font size, reduces the number of characters per line! ...now if only sites would start doing it.
Actually, this approach is a different one to the multi-layered aproach you are probably referring to.
Said multi-layered approaches use multiple pn junctions with differing band-gaps, all on top of one another. This allows them to capture a broader spectrum of incoming light energies, thus increasing efficiency.
The approach referred to in this article is attacking a different problem - using a 3-D 'nano-tower' construction for the pn junctions in order to minimise the reflection of light, thus capturing more of it and therfore being more efficient.
While I'll agree that even this idea for such nano-cells has been around for a little while, it is still in very early stages of development, and has a long way to go. It is encouraging to see apparent evidence that the concept does work, however!
artists that used to rely on albums are still doing so, and they are still selling.
i wish these people would clarify their statements, even at the behest of not getting their hysterical punchy story headline. popular music artist's albums are dying. that's because they were only ever out there to make a few extra bucks, and they are filled with the hit singles and then a bunch of shoddy filler material that no-one ever rated anyway. is it all that surprising, now that it's easier, and more economical to buy just those songs that you like, to do just that? no. real musicians are still doing just fine. they always used to concentrate on making the best albums they could (as opposed to just a few catchy songs), and they still do. guess what? i bet they are selling just as well as they used to as well!
maxi CDs are not sold in the UK, we have to buy two, or even three separate singles... that's stupid UK chart company limiting what classifies as a 'single' rather than the music labels, mind.
also special editions of certain albums are often only sold in particular regions.
and many of the lack of problems occurs because the stores simply import (you can tell 'cos of the import sticker and ridiculously high price) them themselves, they're still not strictly sold in that country by the labels.
CSS will be fine when it reaches a point where random behaviour, like the addition of a border to a cell doesn't move it up/down by 10px or so (yes, it happened), stops occurring.
some of CSS is OK - the how it looks bit, mostly. the rest is abysmal, IMO. if i tell something "width: 100px; height: 200px;" i damn well expect it to be 100px wide, and 200px high. not 'only if it's in display:block', always.
personally, i reckon it's about time we had a new web language from the ground up. fuck backwards compatibility. sometimes the only way to progress is to get a clean sheet of paper out of the drawer, sharpen your pencils, and start again.
Not until digital formats are sold in of equal or better audio quality, and i can do with them what i please, at least......and 5-7 channel surround sound would be cool too.:D
Somebody give me a good reason - that doesn't involve apple potentially looking into what i have in my library (i know they say they don't, but i can't figure any other reason) - as to why automatic album artwork download should require one to log in to the iTMS?
this reminds me of the old 1.5 "force new windows to open in a new tab instead" er, argument...
judging by what happened there, the answer would be 'no':( (have to go into about:config)
turns out, while i hated having custom-sized new windows still pop up at the time, i'm kinda used to it this way now. i'm guessing this might end up the same?

they have a right to do whatever they want within the law on their own website, I have the right to not view any adds I want.
honestly, next they'll be telling me i have to read every email/postal ad i get before binning it...

ah, yet more advantages to having a publicly-funded broadcaster!
more countries should try it.
come on guys!
:o
you could at least try!
-what? are you...

So there never was a paradox after all!

sounds a bit like quicksilver, except fewer features, and less cool...
*insert obligatory 'but then this is an OS X program, and the advertised is a Windows program, so no surprises there' quip*
there are issues with physical media, too.

What?
Uh. I beg to differ.
See people saying how much better casette tapesare than CDs?
No.
it's 'cos they aren't.
Just because something is analogue, doesn't automatically make it better than compressed digital.
Last time i checked, all my old video casettes were degrading terribly...
and from what i recall, they were never that great to begin with.

In other news,
Apple is preparing to sue every company who has released a product name beginning with a lower case 'i'.
honestly, I expected better...
Well I sure as hell hope CDs don't disappear!
