Yes, I am viewing this site from a Windows OS. Windows 2000, to be exact. I'm on my lunch break at work, where the use of Windows is mandated. When I get home, however, I will read follow-ups to this article using Chimera on OS X, from my iMac, or using Galeon on my Mandrake Linux 9.0 PC.
It's just too damn bad all the corporations that have been crippled because of virus and worm attacks from using Microsoft software can't get together and create a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft, to help recover all the BILLIONS of dollars (US) that have been lost because of them!
I have been in the computer industry since 1982, and I have been watching Microsoft devour it's competition since roughly 1984 or 1985. I can still remember an article in PC Magazine when John Dvorak (sp?) mentioned:
"DOS ain't done till Lotus won't run".
This was WAY before any anti-trust cases against Microsoft were started. Almost since day one, Microsoft has determined it will be the dominant force in computing, mainly by stabbing it's competitors (and allies) in the back. I just can't understand why more people can't see this? There's more proof than any court would need, yet Microsoft keeps buying it's self out of trouble.
I, for one, AM doing something about it. My house is Microsoft-free. I refuse to buy ANY product with a Microsoft operating system installed. I won't buy any computer that REQUIRES me to buy a Windows license, even if I'm not going to use Windows. Hear that Dell, HP? What we really need is more people AND corporations to make a commitment like this. The only way to bring down this tyrant is by refusing to fund them.
The Programmer's Guild has been lobbying against the H-1B for years now. Without much effect. I'm glad that the AFL-CIO has brought this to the attention of the main-stream media. Speaking as an American programmer, who's really tired of watching my peers get replaced by cheap, over-seas labor, it's about time!
This will prove very interresting. On one hand, Sen. McCain is a Republican and Republicans generally favor "small" government, which can (and often does) lead to deregulation. On the other hand, Republicans have bowed-down to big business interrests in the past (does anyone really need examples?), and this could be what der Fuehrer Valenti is counting on.
Except for one thing: Any time you use any Microsoft technology, you HAVE to sign-up for a passport license. How many MSN user's HAVEN'T signed-up for passport? How about Hotmail users? Do you use PayPal? Then you use passport. It's getting very difficult to sign-up for services without having to sign-up for passport!
I was introduced to Knoppix about a month and a half ago by a friend of mine in Texas (USA). Since then, I've burned several CD-R's and distributed them to other friends and acquaintances who are curious about Linux, but didn't want to "mess with" their Windows computers.
I think Knoppix is an excellent distro and a great way to introduce people to Linux. I'm thinking about infiltrating our local computer user's group (all Windows users) and seeing if I can hand-out some Knoppix CD's:-)
I no longer have a Windows PC in my house. My wife and I switched to the Mac (matching 17" LCD iMacs) last Saturday and the only PC's I have run either Linux or FreeBSD.
Yeah, but with Windows XP, you need a 3.06 GHz P-IV to equal the perceived performance of a 266 MHz Pentium running Linux:-)

I'm currently 43 and on my second marriage. My first marriage ended in divorce, not because of gaming, but becuase of hacking. I would practically lock myself in the room with my computer and write code on the weekends. Boy was I stupid back then! Now I just don't lock the door:-)
I guess I'm spoiled by my ADSL line, the process of running cvsup on my computers doesn't take more than a few minutes. I suppose if I were using a dial-up, it would take quite a while longer.
Either way, I will schedule my cvsup for this weekend, and run my buildworld then. It's much faster than downloading and installing a new ISO image.
Very true. I tend to track the current release on my server, which helps keep it stable and bug free:-), while I track -stable on my desktop system... because I can;-)
Why is that a good thing? Hell, once you install a FreeBSD distribution, you never have to install another one on the same computer again (assuming you don't mess it up:-). Just point your cvsfile at the branch you wish (RELENG_4 in this case) and do a buildworld, and voila! You will have FreeBSD 4.7.
It's amazing that we (the United States) fought the "cold war" with the Soviet Union for almost four decades.
Our weapons against them were "freedom" and "liberty".
Now that the Soviet Union has crumbled, the United States is becoming more and more like them every day.
I just wonder how long it will be before people are stopped on the street by agents, pushed into cars with darkened windows, and are never seen or heard from again.
I plan on purchasing a Mac in the near future, but I will continue using Linux, FreeBSD and Windows (yes, even Windows). I have been messing around with the iMac and OS-X, and I am really impressed. Not enough to make it my sole OS, but I would like to spend more time investigating the intracies of the Mac and OS-X
My question is: Can any of the DVD's written by these burners be played in a standard home DVD player? Sorry, I just crawled out from under a rock and haven't been following the DVD format wars or anything. I don't want this to pirate DVD's, I was thinking more on the lines of capturing video to disk, then burning it on a DVD.

...can I run Linux on it?
Nah, but I hear there's a port of NetBSD on the way...
... Don't let the door pinch you on your FAT ASS on the way out!!! :-)
Yeah, but let him try to stuff it in his back pocket!
I don't know, she doesn't seem to have very much meat on her bones. She looks rather like a stick.
If we only could have GUI integrated to the kernel...
We'd be running Windows, you dummy!
Hey wait a minute, that IS a windmill! :-)

Oh, please! she has the face of a horse. You seriously need to get out more.

What, you mean like working correctly? I wish!

Yep, that's what I did on my nice new 17" LCD iMac. I *clicked* and it ran :-)

I use the GNU tools on FreeBSD, does that mean I should call it GNU/FreeBSD?
How about the folks that use GNU tools on QNX RTOS? Should they call it GNU/QNX RTOS?
I even use GNU GPL'ed tools on Windows. Should I now call it GNU/Windows 2000?
Is there a line buried somewhere in the GNU GPL License that states "If you use GNU tools, you have to preceed your operating system name with GNU"?
Or maybe if more than nn% of your operating system utilities are GNU, you need to prefix the os name with GNU?
This is getting rediculous.
