But it was the Amiga (first 500, then later 3000 and 4000) where I taught myself C and later C++. From there about a year using Windows, and then to Linux.
As I look back, I now notice that almost every system I was ever drawn to was programmer-centric. I never realized it back then, and even into post-secondary education it took a while to realize that CS was my destiny.
But it sort of does make sense. You spend your whole life worrying about the unknown. Saving for retirement, dreading what may potentially happen wrt your health. Will I still have a job next year, will I be healthy enough to provide for myself in old age, etc?
In some ways, you're living in a constant state of 'fight or flight', with adrenaline levels at maximum all the time. IOW, you're always stressing about something. When you eventually hear that you're dying, you can basically stop worrying about the future. You only have to think about things from day to day, and hence you can enjoy those days.
I've had that happen with relatives, where in one case they were extremely frugal their whole lives, and never spent money on themselves. When they found out they had a year to live, they went out a spent $20000 on credit cards, and died in debt. But they died (relatively) happy.
And another relative, who was exactly like your anecdote, that became happy once they knew they were dying. It makes sense if you consider that some peoples lives are a constant source of stress, and you can never relax for any reason. In some sense (and this will seem extremely ironic), being told you're going to die is a huge weight off your shoulders. I have to admit that I sometimes feel the same way at only 40 years of age. Perhaps that's not a good sign...
Not sure if this is supposed to be serious or a joke, but the 68K refers to a Motorola 68000 CPU, and it could address up to 9 *MB* of RAM. It was in an absolutely different class compared to an 8-bit Apple ][.
Success (!) on getting Kmail 1.x working again in KDE 4.9.4. I simply recompiled the kdepimlibs package, and forced the kmail1 binary to use the new ones. This fixes the profile issues. I suspect once KDE 5 hits, though, Kmail 1.x is dead for good.
For my part, I suffered through the nasty port of Kmail to Akonadi, which was a truly awful experience, but I got through it with my folders intact and it's finally back to a state resembling usability, though not nearly as fast or solid as the original. The Kmail user interface is still the best going, and one day I might actually see some benefit from the new database backend, instead of just pain, races and nonsensical warnings.
Personally, I never did get the newer Kmail working adequately, and am compiling the last 1.x version (from KDE 4.4 or so) and using that. That worked perfectly well up to KDE 4.8. Once KDE 4.9 was released, the profiles stopped working. Previously, you could have separate inbox, sent-mail, servers, etc for different email addresses, and when you sent from each email address, it used the correct sent-folder, etc. Now, it all defaults to local folders. So I don't know what to do next. Dig into the code, I guess, and try to hack it again. Why can't they just leave working programs alone???
They also have Luma/Chroma inputs, which is also what the C64/C128 can output. And those two signals together are basically an S-video connector. The C64 did it before S-video was even a standard. I'm actually looking for such an Amiga monitor for my C128-D, to use L/C in 40-column mode, and the digital RGB in 128 80-column mode. Yes, I probably need another hobby:)
I have to completely agree with this. I've been involved with several large-scale RFPs, and this is exactly how it goes. The only thing I'd add is that like clockwork, any party that doesn't win threatens to sue someone. It happens every time. They must be teaching this in business school or something. I've never seen a more childish group of people.
Not sure if you're being serious or not, but if so, no wonder the the current business world is so screwed up. It seems to be just a childish high-school popularity contest all over again. And IME, many business-people are the most childish, vindictive people I've ever met.

And the further one is removed from actually getting their hands 'dirty' and doing something, the more they're praised. No wonder society is so screwed up.
I know it's almost impossible for Windows' fans to understand, but sometimes dealing with things not working is still better than dealing with problems in Windows. At least with the former there's a chance that (a) someone will fix it, or (b) you can learn to fix it yourself. That just isn't an option in Windows. If there's a bug and it's closed-source, there's nothing you can do about it.

Yep, openness and proprietary concerns are diametrically opposed. The former seeks to standardize and homogenize, while the latter seeks to differentiate (aka, lock-in).
I'd argue that it's always been like this, but the 1% want you to believe in the 'American Dream' and that you can actually achieve it. As long as you're toiling away with dreams of eventually making it, you won't be distracted by the system that is so obviously set up for you to fail. Once large numbers of people start to realize this, then those in control will really be in trouble (the Occupy movement was a brief start).
Interesting note: the shield was formed by reading the game code as data (for perceived randomness). So when you look at the shield, in some sense you're looking at the source assembly code. Matrix-style.
I don't think anyone ever reasonably stated that Linux wasn't efficient, or that OpenGL wasn't adequate compared to Direct3D. Or maybe they did, but it wasn't factual. A properly configured Linux system has been faster than Windows for some time, at least for the past few years. The main problem with Linux has always been the lack of polish and presentation to the general public. The pieces have always been there, it's just been very fragile. Maybe now that someone is stepping up to the plate, Linux can receive what it's needed all along: better marketing and polishing. IMHO, it hasn't been large technical issues keeping Linux back. The technology is sound, and has been for quite some time.
Of course this is only available where it absolutely needs to be; where they're being hammered from competition. Meanwhile, other markets are left to be price-gouged as long as possible. This only proves that they have the ability to upgrade the network, they just won't until they're dragged kicking and screaming. Of course many businesses have that attitude, but it isn't often so obviously apparent as in this case.
Just wanted to add that this is a very good description of how the real hardware works. And the problems of non-realtime determinism is one of the major issues I face in developing Stella (http://stella.sf.net). For a system so rudimentary, you'd never believe how hard it is to accurately emulate it. You basically need to emulate a TV as well; the system was tied so closely to it.
Do you have this response typed up somewhere? Because every time an SSD discussion comes up, you post the exact same response. Quite a few of the 'facts' on the website you mention are no longer applicable to current technology.
