  1. Re:Which begs the question on RentACoder Losing Street Cred? · · Score: 2, Informative

That isn't how i've seen it.

I'm no guru (yet :D) but I just recently joined and put down a $10 bid to get some business and some credibility on a random number generator (I think someone wasn't doing their homework -.- ).

I lost the bid to an Indian programmer who bid $20 and his bid was a generic "I look forward to hearing from you, and rest assured that the results will meet your requirements and expectations."

Whereas I had just spent the last half-hour talking with the guy about exactly what he wanted, and sent him a demo.

All in all I figure RAC is good for odd jobs and an occasional good-deal... but I doubt many people like me (American -.-) make a living off of it.

Actually this is a half dupe, since the main contest here is the fiber strength not the elevator. It is a secondary note.

  3. X-Prize Foundation on Space Elevator Challenge · · Score: 5, Interesting

is already responsible for a major advancement: the first private space ship able to relaunch in two weeks (SpaceShipOne).

The prize is definately motivation, and the X-Prize foundation has a few contests going:
-The Ansari X-Prize (Get 3 people to 100km twice in two weeks) - WON
-The Archon X-Prize (Sequence 100 people in 10 days with $10,000 cost per person) - OPEN
-The Automotive X-Prize (Currently being developed. Create super-efficent cars or alternative energy) - FUTURE

Those are the three the X-Prize Foundation has created. An interesting fact from the X-Prize website: "Ten times the amount of the prize purse was spent by the competitors trying to win the prize."

  4. Don't block sites on VDARE Fights Blocking By Censorware · · Score: 1

    without a damn good reason.

What we need is less blocking.

I can understand blocking pornographic content from school servers, and I can understand blocking excessive gore and even games (to make them focus on their studies or something).

But you shouldn't block websites which have a person or groups opinions. As I like to say (and I think many others do):
"You have a right to your opinion, however sick, twisted, and wrong it may be."

Protecting young children, I think I can understand. But if kids cannot judge what is right or wrong on their own by 18, it is probably the parents and/or schools sheltering them that's retarding their judgement.

It says 'transferred for value' so I think taking a tax cut for the donation is right out :)

But hey, i've been evalutating WinZip for a little while now... ... and it works pretty well. I think it needs more testing.

IMHO donating to charity shouldn't be a problem, but I agree: Check with the rep.

  7. Checkup on Listening for Cancer Cells · · Score: 1, Insightful
"In fact, the blood-test procedure could be performed regularly such as in screenings for high-risk patients, requiring just a small sample of blood, and its results would be almost immediate. "It could take just 30 minutes to find out if there are any circulating cancer cells," Viator said."
With how long many medical tests take, this should have definately made it into the brief...

I can agree entirely with that.

With steam it's more of buying the download, and it is nice to be able to log into steam from a new computer and download the games without hassling about it...

But pay to play for retail games?

I'd only ever take a service like this as a alternative to renting games via Blockbuster-esque stores.

  10. The price for casual gamers. on Ask the Warhammer Online Team · · Score: 0

I'll tell you right now i'm not shovelling out $15 a month for a game i spend 4 hours a week on. Sure some weeks i'll spend tons of time on, but around midterms and finals, I might not even get on for a week or two.

The question is: How is payment going to be handled? Is there going to be a way for casual gamers to get a reasonable deal while limiting the cost for hardcore gamers to a reasonable total?

If perhaps however you went say $0.xx per hour (up to $15 total per month) I would definately pay it. Even if there was a minimum ($5 minimum, but that pays the first x hours in a month).

Perhaps two tiers of payment. $10 for maximum of 8 hours per week and $15 for unlimited access.

  11. Re:are the files usable? on Best Buy, Real and SanDisk To Launch Music Service · · Score: 0

If you buy a song you have the right to back it up. Assuming you bought it for keeps, just use a direct recorder and save the file as whatever you want. If you bought it for say two weeks, then you are legally obligated to delete the backup when the original times out.

I'm really suprised how much effort is going into the DMA when it is so easily thwarted.
