    Lock boot images, and the real security problems for persisting on a host and hiding activity will only move to the next rung on this ladder.

    Except with Windows, at least, the next rungs on this ladder are already secureâ"signed bootloader boots signed kernel runs signed drivers. Regardless of how tight your tinfoil hat is (or how tight it should be!), this is the last step in defeating TDSS-alikes.

    Steam lets you play games offline. I played a lot of Torchlight on my netbook which, ironically, rarely had internet access. When I got home, it'd sync my save game with the Steam Cloud (el-oh-el), and I could pick up where I left off on my desktop.

    That's why I have 132 Steam games, but will never buy another Blizzard product again.

    All of these things shit up the board (even more than my knee-jerk someone-on-the-internet-is-wrong! posting history), and nuking entire threads of bullshit takes modpoints I'd rather spend on up-modding.

    It's not "sad and pathetic." Replacing spinning rust with an SSD is almost better than buying an entire new computer.

    Besides, a 120GB drive can easily hold ~55 hours of high-bitrate music. It's like calling someone's new sports car "sad and pathetic" because they can no longer tow all of their boats at the same time.

    If you watch the moderation for any given topic, it always skews a certain way and punishes anyone who speaks out against the conventional wisdom. Because a limited pool of users controls the filtering of opinions, there is in fact an overall viewpoint that is enforced rather than a diversity of ideas.

    Funny, elections work the same way.

    When I installed Chrome it did not pop up a window and offer me a choice of which search engine to use.

    You're either lying or blind, Mr. AC. I installed Chrome just now, and I was greeted with a search engine pop-up. If you miss that, you'll see it every time you right click on the URL bar.

    The USGS fact sheet shows 30 GWe potential. The 550 GWe figure is a guesstimate assuming "enhanced geothermal systems" technology happens. Although there are two small plants in France and Germany, the Los Alamos national laboratory shut down theirs after failing to produce net power. To my knowledge, there are no other sites.

    You may as well say, "We have 95,000 GWe potential assuming fusion."

    You're kidding, right? Wikipedia says we generated 1100 gigawatts of electricity in 2010. If estimates are correct, we'll have 15 gigawatts of geothermal by 2025. That's roughly 1% of current production, with potential for "over twenty percent of our national energy needs."

    I know Wikipedia isn't the epitome of reliability, but those numbers are a far cry from "100% of baseline for the foreseeable future." Do you have any citation at all for that claim?

    So, they make a whole bunch of them and bury them in the grass on the quad where everyone assembles in an evacuation.

    I remember, back in high school, the district deciding on a new set of emergency procedures, to be rolled out post haste. For our safety and edification, a bored teacher was reading them to us, along with every other class first hour.

    After a few pages, he got to "bomb threat," stopped, and said, "Well, that's stupid. If I were going to plant a bomb, it'd be where everyone evacuates." Not exactly villain-from-Speed levels of evil, but still kind of shocking to hear it coming from a teacher.

    So, I think you, I, and at least one other person are of like minds--if anyone calls in a bomb threat, the last thing I'm doing is packing in close with everyone else. The horror, though, if anyone ever calls in a tornado threat.

    Digital currency just means the Central bank can wipe-out our savings more efficiently (by devaluing the dollar).
