I think it will be quite a while before StarOffice becomes completely compatible with MS Office - it's in MS's own best interest to keep Office separate just to keep the installed base in place...
I totally agree - this is a basic ground rule that must have immediate consequences for being broken, so out he goes. All too often people want to make excuses and let people off the hook, but that only serves to erode the integrity of the medium.
They estimate that each shot would result in a 90-lb recoil kick due to the movement of gasses within the gun during the lasing process, so I'd bet there's going to be some sound too.
Besides the basic durability issue, I would think these weapons would also be vulnerable to an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) device, which as I understand it, could basically knock out all such weapons within the range of effect...
The question however, is whether this is built into the service agreement with customers, or is just "their word." In bankruptcy court, the secured creditors would hardly let something of value like that simply slide out the door.
Trust is truly the operative word here. As the article points out, patches were available for Slammer and other attacks, but admins didn't feel confident that installing these patches wouldn't cause further problems. The patch is worthless if people won't install it...
The problem is that many companies now IPO just so that the angel investors and the like can get their cut and get out. They are not really doing that well and the capital they receive from the IPO isn't going to change anything.
