How do we know what the radiation levels are in each of those environments?
I think the GECK one is significantly lower. In fact, if you kill Fawkes, I'm pretty sure you can go in and retrieve it yourself using the suits and medicine in the room right outside that.
I noticed this the other day when I was using google.co.jp... I thought it was just the Japanese one. My first thought was 'Oh wow, that's ugly.' Now I see it's going to be used for google.com, too... Ugh.
The user-submitted ones in the blog look way, way better, including the one they took the concept from. What were they thinking?
Because Google projects are usually side-projects that the developers work on with part of their time as a 'fun' project.
The developer that chose to do this was probably just having fun and didn't really expect it to be picked as one of the ideas that gets launched to users. So he did it however he wanted.
I worked at a computer store a few years back. We had 5 complete, working PCs they wanted to donate to a local thrift-store/charity. We had to jump through hoops to donate them. We never tried again because it was just too much hassle.
Don't assume that your area is the same as all others.
Or starts to equalize, really. We've currently got a situation where some countries have high-priced labor and other have very low-priced because it used to be difficult to travel and communicate long-distance. As those things change, all countries have better ability to do jobs from other countries.
In other words, the world was previously out of balance and now it's correcting itself.
The enticement at that point is that it's probably cheaper to stay there than move the entire operation, which means either disrupting shipments for a while or paying for 2 locations for a while. You have to be able to save a significant amount of money elsewhere to justify it. And you have to do either guarantee that savings, or do it in the short run to have it make sense.
Are you suggesting that the people would willingly follow the job and take a big paycut? Dell wouldn't move if it didn't mean a lot of money saved, so it's not going to be a little paycut.
If the people are so willing to work for less, why didn't they just work for less where they were at and save themselves the trouble of moving to another country?
Or perhaps, it just wouldn't matter whether people were free to move or not.
I don't think Fawkes was immune. I think he was just very hardened against it.
Charon, however, is definitely immune as ghouls are healed by radiation.
But your point is well taken... They just wanted the character to die for no reason. I'm sure I could have run in, hit the buttons and run out before the radiation got to me... especially with all the gear and medicine I was carrying for radiation.
I'm hopeful that Sony pulls this off and manages to get 3D-TVs to be the norm. Starting with gamers is a good way to do that, too.
Of course, if they have patents on this technology and nobody else can do it, it'll die an early death... Especially since Sony TVs are so heavily overpriced to begin with.
When they abandoned the 3D support is when I stopped caring about 3D from nVidia. If it's not there when I want it, what good is it?
As for this new offering, 'for the masses' is an asinine thing to say. The $200 glasses are as expensive as ever (if not moreso) and the special monitor needed to go with them is hardly going to be a cheap one.
The idea behind OpenID is that the forum never has your login credentials, they just have the promise of some OpenID server that you are really you. They can never use the information they obtain to log into any other service you use with that login.
You still have to trust that OpenID server with all of your logins, but it's not like you trust every tiny site with them.
Having said that, very few sites I use will take OpenID, and some are providers only... Which is absolutely worthless. I'm waiting for something worthwhile to happen before I jump in, and I bet a lot of other people are, too.
People have that attitude because it has almost always heralded the downfall of the thing that has ceased to grow. Face it, our society is all about 'progress' and that means newer and better goods. If a company stops producing better goods, it'll have fewer customers. It's all downhill from there. Very few companies manage to recover after that.
As for the 'media' attention and craziness about it, I'm sick of it, too. I don't need journalists or bloggers telling me what I can already see. They seem to have forgotten that their job is to bring new information to people, not just talk about obvious information constantly. (Journalists, that is. Bloggers have always existed just to talk about themselves incessantly.)
It's for both, actually. The Flash games in particular are usually meant for the Wii's browser, though. It's apparently based on Opera and they released a spec to allow WiiMote control.
A friend of mine had his removed because he was having headaches. Since I was also having headaches, I asked a doctor and his reply:
No, that probably will not fix your head or jaw aches.
He still recommended that I have them removed for other reasons, including the fact that the longer you wait, the more dangerous it is. There's always a chance that removal will tear a nerve in your cheek giving you a permanently numb cheek, among other dangers.
As always, I am -not- a doctor. You should only take medical advice from a doctor.
With this research, I'm wondering if I should have waited, though. The advice above about getting the stem cells from another back tooth is a good idea, though. Even if they (for some reason) couldn't regrow that back tooth, I'd gladly trade a back one for a front one.
1) Entertainment is not useless. That is -all- this was made for. Entertainment.
2) My friend uses this to put up a 'going to X tonight' so that all his friends can tag along like the sheeple they are. (Honestly, he really is the life of any party, so I can't really blame them.)
3) Language learning! It's a great tool to help learn another language. Nowhere else on the internet exists so much mindless chatter as on twitter. You'd think forums had it, but nooooo... Twitter has this area squarely under its thumb.
I assume you mean it's because they use the API to send the messages, but they could easily have just scraped the website to send them anyhow. The only way to prevent twitter-spam (and any other service) is to only allow messages from friends. Since that is really, really restrictive, you won't get many services to do that.
It's not that I don't agree that they should require authorization for apps on twitter, it's that it has nothing to do with this story.
I've started to play D&D a few times, but the groups I was in didn't seem to care about the rules at all and viewed my interest in the rules as bad... We never got past making a character, and I tried a few times.
So I'm serious when I ask: Why is that kind of person bad? Aren't they having fun within the rules? Don't the make the adventure more exciting instead of less? They take a system that is pretty predictable and stretch it to the limits.
As for 'rules lawyers', which you didn't mention, aren't they just keeping the gameplay fair? I mean, if there's rules, they're meant to be obeyed.
As for 'playing the system' of the stock market... I'm surprised nobody thought it could happen. Even if they aren't a gamer, surely they've seen the same activities in the workplace or even their own house. Everything runs like this because there's always someone who wants something.
By the same token, they could have any privacy policy and TOS they want, too, but you can bet there would be a huge uproar here if they did things nerds thought was unethical. To me, both cases are just as interesting. (That is to say, not.)
I did the math, too, but differently. I realized it's cheaper to buy the DVDs (usually less than $2/ep, but depends on the show) and then I not only get to watch it, I can watch it in a marathon AND I have a hard copy. So I dropped cable TV as well. It just isn't worth it for me.
He mentioned that it was because of the features. And that still doesn't excuse it, especially since they didn't charge for the iPhone update of the exact same content. It was a really foolish move on their part. They gained a little money and lost a lot of mindshare.
I have a theory on that. After spending so much money on a console, they have to be absolutely assured that they didn't make a mistake or they'll spend all their time hating themselves for choosing the 'wrong' console. It would be much more productive to realize that there's no 'right' console and just be happy with their decision, but that seems to be impossible.
Personally, I have all 3. At the moment, my PS3 gets turned on 10x more than the Wii or 360, but a few months ago, it was that same ratio of 360 to the other 2, and a few months before that the Wii was the clear winner.
In the end, I think the PS3 will be my favorite for 5 reasons: HD space is much greater (mostly because it's easier to replace than the 360 or Wii), the interface is more to my liking, my online friends have the PS3, I can access the Japanese (and EU and HK) PSN shops and buy things from there, and it's region-free for -all- games. Since I'm learning Japanese now (and other languages later) the last 2 are tremendous assets.
That doesn't stop me from turning on my 360 for every new exclusive, or when I want to play Rock Band, though.
I die a little inside every time someone says something is more important that the rights set down in our earliest documents. You know, the ones we wrote in response to England's tyranny. I can't believe anyone could actually believe something like that while living in this country.

Now that it's a big project, it's being fixed.

Don't assume that your area is the same as all others.
I'm happy not knowing exactly how my car runs and most users are happy not knowing exactly how their operating system runs.
Unless you know everything about absolutely everything in your life, you have no room to talk about people not knowing how their computers work.
"the world wide market starts to falter"

I knew a guy that tried that. At least, I think he was 'trying' it and not really believing it. It didn't work well for him.

Ah, not so!
There are 3 reasons why this is not 'useless'.
1) Entertainment is not useless. That is -all- this was made for. Entertainment.
2) My friend uses this to put up a 'going to X tonight' so that all his friends can tag along like the sheeple they are. (Honestly, he really is the life of any party, so I can't really blame them.)

10 points for looking correct, but minus several million for not being correct.
Earlier in 2008, the bug did not exist. In the newest firmware, it does. that means the bug was introduced in 2008.
The copyright on that code ended in 2007, so the code hasn't been edited since then.
Clearly, this is not the code you are looking for.
By the same token, they could have any privacy policy and TOS they want, too, but you can bet there would be a huge uproar here if they did things nerds thought was unethical. To me, both cases are just as interesting. (That is to say, not.)
