I just ordered mine and they charged me $299 for the phone because I am currently still in a contract. Why bother telling us about the $179 price since they push new phones on you when your contract is up in order to keep you in a contract. If only a very small percentage of your user base is not locked in a contract then its some pretty shady trickery to shove the $179 price down our throats. At least if I pay $299 don't make me still enter an additional 2 year contract. There are various places on the net reporting this, including Android's Forums.
The point of the software is that it doesnt require you to install a program and set up port forwarding on a router. The "server" end can be installed and connects to a proxy where the "client" side can then access the server. Basically, if your friend lives 5 states away and you want to help them, they can EASILY hit a website or load a single application and allow you to access their system. VNC software alone requires that you drive 5 states away to configure the machine first -- or worse, explain to a clueless end user how to install an application and set up port forwarding on a router that they don't even know the password for.
I use VNC a lot... but it just doesnt work in some scenarios like these.
And think about how it got to be that way. Remember when Steve Jobs came back to Apple in 1997? The most memorable moment of his keynote was hime saying microsoft doesnt have to fail for Apple to win and he called for huge respect for Microsoft. Today, Apple has grown into a huge company again.
"I don't believe it's a Cisco problem in any way, shape, or form," he says firmly"
How do they know that?
Simple: The invested a lot of money in cisco and nothing in Apple. Thankfully companies that sell the most expensive equipment never make any mistakes so we can safely assume that it is not a Cisco problem.... in any way, shape, or form.
I have no idea why no one on the entirety of slashdot knows anything about networks. If I were to reply to every wrong post in this thread alone, I'd be here all fucking morning, so I'm just going to deal with this one.
Thank you so much for demonstrating the problem for us. It's now apparent that the iPhones do not understand networks and because it is their belief that ever network is running DHCP. The iPhone will not take no for an answer and all hell breaks lose when there is no DHCP to be found.
I hate math... In college I was failing statistics so badly by the third week that I mathematically not be able to pass the class. I couldn't figured out statistics but I needed math to realize that I couldn't pass the class.
Point is, I think the emphasis on math is a little skewed but the author of the post is more skewed than anything. Basic math (+, -, X,/) may really not be all that important since us geeks are surrounded by computers that can EASILY do that for us but I can't understand how you can even begin to work with a computer and understand computer logic unless you understand at least the basic principals of algebra.
So a system that is based on 1's and 0's (I checked, those are NUMBERS) suddenly does not require any mathematics to operate?
I guess some people will like that, and it will probably increase security for the phone, third party network applications would include all kinds of malware if I understand it correctly.
Microsoft buys friends in the music business for $1 per Zune sold.
Microsoft releases the Zune and listens to the laughs hear round the blogosphere.
MAFIAA realizes that $1 for each of the 8 Zunes sold only equal $8 which does not cover the cost of a single CD and restricts their music from being properly used on Zune
Microsoft learns that buying friends is a bad idea.
MAFIAA calls press conference which contains only one sentence: "So long and thanks for all the fish!"
The worst part about this entire process is that, while it may make sense for a new artist to get substantially less money, in the long run it has nothing to do with how good or well liked the artist is in the general public. The RIAA decides who will make it and who will not. If they want someone to do well, then it is them who get the good $7 promotions at Target, the good advertising spots, and the most airtime on radio stations. OTOH, if they dont want to have an artist do well, that artist is still left to fend for themselves AND pay the RIAA on the off chance that they do make it big.

Wow... slashdot CAN be educational! :) Thanks for that link

It doesnt seem they included this device in their calculations. I wonder why? :)
Stanford still has the the best idea.
But it was more than 15 years ago, so I'm not that worried. Besides, they would go after my son, wouldn't they?
And fortunately you now have the slashdot community as a witness for your trial.
Cisco killed Linksys years ago when they bought them. Oh, wait... you mean their just taking the name off? Ok, that's different.

RIAA lawsuit against modecx in 5.. 4.. 3..
This is just a patent for making hacking difficult, but since when does that stop anyone?
Apparently AACS knows how to stop them.
Its good to see iTS (and the Amazon store) making steps towards a sensible sales model.
My money is on the fact that Amazon has a patent on sensible sales models.
As far as I can tell, Jack Valenti didn't kill the Emperor.
Actually, he did die. Maybe it' not worthy of forgiveness but it sure as hell helps!
"...if you make the tiniest of mistakes such as timestamps..."
Yes, it has been confirmed that time stamp errors can cost you 12 days in jail.
Google: "Don't Be Evil"
DoubleClick: "Be Evil"
This actually scares me... Google buying YouTube was a question of intelligence... seeing this is really a question of morals....
Great... another reason for Microsoft to send us an anti-pirac^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H windows update.

Yes, Paris Hilton will be proud.
Seriously though I just don't understand how something can come to a market like this with a major selling point like this crippled the way it is.

Nope... your up there with Wal-Mart.
