I'm not really sure what you mean by the fascism quote or the "Bush Derangement" link.
Regarding Bin Laden, however, I feel that you have misjudged both him and Al Queda. These guys are at least as loony as the right-wingers in America who support an endless "War" on "Terror". Bin Laden installing Sharia in America is about as likely as the tale of Iraqis welcoming the American military with open arms and quickly becoming a liberal democracy. It's simply not going to happen.
As for their goals to kill millions of Americans, if they truly had the resources to do this, it would've happened. However all they are capable of are a few scattered attacks that dot across the globe. White supremacist groups in America are probably more organized and effective than Al-Queda.
Finally, someone who is addressing the root cause of why Linux continues to trail market leaders in desktop share.
Hmm, I always thought "Linux" trailed because 95% of desktop PCs come with Windows preinstalled. So the root cause wouldn't be graphical, but rather Microsoft's inertia and slimy business practices.
But let's put that aside for a second, and assume that things like application and vendor lock-in do not exist, and people have the choice of whatever OS they want. In this hypothetical reality, I really cannot see people choosing Windows over KDE or GNOME because Windows is "prettier". Some might claim that, say, OS X is slicker-looking than all of these, but the reality here is that all these desktops have reached a point where they look pretty good.
This is quite possibly the worst (non-troll) logic I've seen on Slashdot for a long time. You are essentially saying we should halt all CO2 reduction efforts until we have a viable fuel that can replace oil in vehicles. Why the fuck do you think this a good idea? NEWSFLASH: oil isn't the only problem. And even though it is the biggest, most visible one, stopping research on the other 99% of CO2 reduction efforts would not magically produce some alternative fuel tomorrow, and would in fact stall all the other efforts, which I cannot see a positive side to.
What the fuck is your point? You proclaim at least a dozen assertions, yet fail to make any sort of rational argument. Come back when you can offer something that makes sense.
I find that most Wikipedia articles suffer from the reverse: poor writing style and trivia make them much larger than needed. Concise, cruftless articles would probably be a better way of reducing the disk/archive needs of Wikipedia.
"I tell you, freedom and human rights in America are doomed," bin Laden said as the U.S. war on terrorism raged in Afghanistan. "The U.S. government will lead the American people in -- and the West in general -- into an unbearable hell and a choking life." linky
Of course, we should keep in mind that Bush is simply the symbol of this decay. The Administration as a whole is what scares the hell out of me. Add to this the people in Congress who support these shenanigans. And places like the UK have some nasty new laws as well.
Didn't you know that Bush is the cause of all things good, even when he's not? The sad thing is it takes away any shred of credibility that his supporters have.
You actually think a bunch of untrained civilians with guns would stand an ounce of a chance against the most powerful military in the world?
I really hope you've never studied the American Revolution. Yeah, there were trained people (and the French), but you should keep in mind that Minutemen were named so because they dressed quickly in old clothes instead of fancy military uniforms. And there are dozens of other examples throughout history (as well as current events) that show civilians can incapacitate even the greatest military powers.
I think it's kind of funny that you complain about all these politicians and parties not sharing your views, yet you seem to be quiet on this point: democracy is more than voting. And I don't mean running for office, either.
You can join a political party and work to improve their platform on different issues. Depending on what state you live in, this might also be the only way to vote in a primary, giving you a chance to support candidates who you like.
You can join or start a non-profit organization. I'm pretty sure you've heard of ones like the EFF, ACLU, and NRA.
You can work to get measures on the ballot yourself. For some types of legislation, this is the only practical way to get something done. For example: my county petitioned our commissioners to vote on a smoking ban. It didn't pass (despite polls being like 85% in favor), and unfortunately the commissioner I know personally gave me a pretty weak anti-regulation reason as to why he voted against it (and he's also a smoker, heh). The plan now is to get it on the ballot (probably in '08).
Well, if it's breaking all over the place, I think it's a pretty appropriate name (har har). Also, I think one thing most comments have missed is that Dapper is really "Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS", and Edgy is not a Long Term Support version. Of course, it will be interesting to see how well upgrades from one LTS version to another work.
I think it's absolutely hilarious how easy it is to spot you right-wing libertarian/"anarchist" types. Even funnier is the fact that you hardly ever see anyone with these views using some kool-aid to make the cyanide taste better. Anyway, I digress.
MORAL OF THE PARENT POST: Government is always the force of evil that "takes away" your "freedom". Democracy is a lie and never works, and the only right and good way of doing things is probably The Market, which springs forth fully-formed from the Freedom of Man.
They're also more reliable if you consider the rate of electricity generating capacity being added in North America.
And more specifically, Google's main offices are in California, so this also pays off in the categories of "outage prevention" and "minimization of utility company shenanigans".
Two guys both out playing to win, just not playing by the strategies used by the high brows.
They were following the rules. They just weren't playing "correctly". And it's probably true that their tactics wouldn't work in high-level play. But I agree that it's stupid to be negative and bitchy about two guys who play, um, quixotically.

Debian's policy has always been that they can't and won't accept a licence specific to them. This applies as much to trademark licences as any other sort.
I think this is a good stance for a project to take, if they really want to live the ideals of capital-letters Free Software (and perhaps Open Source). However, this does raise some interesting issues as far as trademark law is concerned.
IANAL, but I do know that trademarks must be used and "enforced" in order for a person/company to keep holding the mark. Mozilla seems to be doing a pretty good job here.
But we should also remember that this isn't the only case of a Free/Open software project holding trademarks. "Linux" and "Apache" (and probably dozens of others) are trademarked. And yet we don't have Linus penning novella-length flames about the patches applied by the multitude of distributions that use Linux.
My question is: how would the courts view this? Mozilla could definitely show that they vigorously "defend" their marks, but what about other projects? I know that all distributions I've used have all stated "Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds, Ell Oh Ell", but who knows whether or not this is done for all trademarked packages.
I guess I'm probably really overthinking this whole thing. Trademark holders can perform diligence by periodically crawling Google for their mark and yelling at people who don't give credit, or those who try to pass off their "Myspace Stalker" patches as SUPAR OFFICI4L (D00D).
PS: this is the post you receive after I don't sleep. i hope you enjoy it
IANAL, however I think the key issue here is probably that of "derivitive works".
Case 1: you take a game and use its stock art to create your film. I'm pretty sure you'll get smacked down in court with this method unless you clear it beforehand, or there's some loophole in the game's EULA or something.
Case 2: you take a moddable engine and make all new art, or use capital-f Free art. I think there's less chance of getting sued here, however it's a very grey-looking area, and IANAL, so yeah.
Of course, there are a bunch of engines available under the GPL now (Quake 3, etc), so that would be a good way of doing things.
Let's think about this for a minute. If a man is on his cell phone for hours per day, who exactly is he talking to? It's probably, uh, his girlfriend/wife.
Did you read the article? I'm not claiming to be an expert on fighting and stuff, but apparently this guy is "several weight classes" above Boll. Also, you have to take into account that Boll "supposedly" was a boxer or something, so it's pretty hard to pin down his actual level of skill (possibly negating any advantage).
I'm not really sure what you mean by the fascism quote or the "Bush Derangement" link.

Oil replacement first, then reduction.

If you can't admit, sans weasely qualifier, that there are in fact valid counterpoints to your original claim, I think I'm done here.

libertarianism is a conservative ideology
