I've also had problems with Steam. The only Valve software I've ever bought is the (original) Half-Life "platinum" pack which had HL1 and the original expansions. After not using Steam for a couple of months, I thought it was nice of them to greet me with a "you've been hacking, bud" message when I log in. And it won't even let me play single-player.
The best part of this was the exchange I had with Valve. I told them "I have not logged in for several months, what's the deal?". They want me to verify that I own said CD-keys. So they tell me to, here it comes, take a picture of the CDs and the packaging. And I had to do this twice, as the first time I did it, they somehow lost the file. After this, I resolved to never ever buy something that runs on Steam again.
the question is when are the anti-malware community going to step up to the plate and provide protection from this software
Or you could just use Zonealarm, or some other third party firewall. I just hit 'decline' when wgatray tried to access the network, and that was that. I haven't had any problems with Windows Update, either.
Wine is not supposed to be "a real Windows system". It is supposed to emulate the Windows API on top of X11 and Unix. That said, World of Warcraft runs on Wine. Also, another post pointed out the fallacy of your Quake 4 claim. So congrats, you have some gigantic holes in your logic. Well done.
It sounds like you have some good stuff to say, except for the fact that you can't stick to one argument and follow through with it. Even though half-baked points generally make sense, stringing a couple of them together does not a good argument make.
And by "half-baked" i don't mean they're bad, just that you don't follow through on them.
It would be nice to play with a cat without being miserable. However, I think we should be trying to breed healthy and smart pets instead of designer stuff like this. I'd rather have a smart mutt than one that is stupid and gets sick all the time. Yeah, I realize my ideal pet could be considered "designer". Also, YRO??
Um, I just want to say that NPD sucks. They don't release numbers to the public, so we have no way of tracking them to try and analyze whether they're just making shit up. I also am not sure that they get sales information from all of the major retailers, so we have no way of knowing if their numbers (even if accurate) really reflect what's going on.
There. Since you didn't actually mention WTF you install, that's all the help you're getting from me. I'm not going to assume anything, since you are the one who asked. Form a question first, don't expect us to decode your bullshit.
Wait, wha? Let's have some evidence, bud. I find it hard to belive that video games are making more money than an industry where they have gross profits of hundreds of millions of dollars per hit (movies).
People in big media report things that are important,
Hahahahahahahhahahaha. Yeah, the corporate media have done a swell job of, say, questioning the US government, especially on issues like "the truth of 9/11" and "why did those exit polls in 2004 not match the vote count?".
Unless you meant "report things that will help them stay in power". Then I agree with you totally.
Well, if you buy into the whole MS/SCO connection (and I do somewhat), it makes sense that they would want to drag this thing out as long as possible. Making stupid claims that IBM has to refute just makes the whole thing last longer.
They also seem to love ignoring court deadlines and then making motions to request extended time.
My "deliberate butchering" was to note that I was focusing solely on that portion of your claim. I know that Sony's marketing, among other things, were far greater factors. I have not, however, seen any evidence whatsoever that piracy was a significant reason the Dreamcast failed. Thus why I focused on that claim. You fail at reading comprehension.
I'd say this is more like "you're going to print my FUD or I won't give you an interview". Glickman is (semi-subtly) using a fundamentalist, black and white image of copyright, that to the untrained eye might look reasonable. The neat thing about his little trick is that anyone who disagrees with him is anti-copyright, anti-property (see the clothing example), and against compensating people for their work (musicians, etc).
Unfortunately (for him), he's a fucking loon. The EFF has never advocated abolishing copyright or not compensating artists. They have, however, advocated exploring alternative models of compensation that might actually work in reality.
Well, I believe that in the past, the ESRB was much more an "honor system" type of process. The game company wanting a rating would send a video that "accurately reflects" the general content of the game. If, however, Rockstar is forced to document each thing that could change the rating, it's a bit different. A game the size of GTA has hundreds of events that may reflect on the rating.
I'm afraid that my save has been screwed over. After triggering a quest, the "monsters nearby" bit was apparently set, so I can no longer sleep, wait, or fast travel. I figured it was because I was in the general area of the quest, so I went to the nearest town. Whoops, looks like there's some monsters in the inn, so no sleepy time for you, Mr. On-the-verge-of-leveling. Hopefully I can find a workaround.
What in the fuck kind of dumbass argument is this? A single computer/video game costs a lot of money. I fail to see how people expecting a polished product are "not appreciating" the game. The genre and/or content of the game has nothing to do with it.
Wait hang on a second. Wasn't there a bunch of squawking about how MS wasn't going to allow updates for the offline portions of games? Is this still true? If not, it's certainly a rather sad precedent for console games.
Damn man, it's really funny when a self-confessed pedantry post is completely wrong. If "detoxing" means making it impossible to obtain whatever you're addicted to, it's pretty damn logical to consider a place helping people get over a non-chemical addiction as a "detox" clinic.
And non-chemical addictions can most definitely be as strong or stronger than chemical ones. Just because it is different, does not mean it is "a million miles" away.
Frequently addiction is only applied to socially undesireable or prohibited indulgences. For example, despite its frequent use to excess, users of alcohol are rarely described as "addicted", and are instead given a specific label of "alocoholic".
I love it when I read something that goes like "tobacco, alcohol, or drugs". Tobacco and alcohol are most definitely different, they aren't even in the same category as those evil drugs. Because everybody knows marijuana kills far more people than alcohol and tobacco.
Yeah, nobody's ever successfully argued by comparing stuff to cancer or communism... oh wait. I guess it's ok if you're a huge corporation, but a few people doing something they believe is right is insanity.
And people wonder why I stay off of Myspace...

Strip clubs and prostitutes != pornography.

And my experience with the DC was the opposite, as I nor anyone I knew who had one pirated games for it. Your anecdote fails it.

We'll probably have to watch Digg and Technocrat for the story about the Dupe detox center...
