I remember seeing a British Army advert where they control a UAV using a 360 controller, is this advertising, truthfully what they use, or trying to make it appeal to gamers? Either way, I was pretty disgusted. My 360 crashes so much, I really don't want to see the Army using them for anything. I saw similar advertising and think it is only the controller not the entire 360 they are using. UK military spending has to show value for money and not 'redesign the wheel' if unnecessary. If the 360 controller works and is readily available & cheap, why not use the 360 controller?
Indeed, sorry the numbers are entirely my mistake.
The AC's 720x576 is closer to HD than my quote of 480, so my point that for most programming HD isn't far enough from UK digital to be worth it, is actually more valid than I originally stated.

The only stuff that really benefits from an HD tv are sports and summer "blockbusters" like Transformers. I have said this before but the best application for HDTV is natural history, case in point The BBC stunner Planet Earth. I think it's ironic that the best use of better TV is real life.
You're right about most programming not needing HD, especially here in the UK where digital 480 widescreen is already the norm. You just don't need HD to get the full enjoyment of non-cinematic shows.
From the report, only 20% of computers in the schools are even capable of running Vista and Office.
And from my past experiences of UK schools, they're probably counting the Intel Macs in that figure. And the Acorns, and the bbc micros too. 20% is way too high.
I'm amazed people are fooled into replacing their phones at all In Britain, most people replace their phones when they get a new contract, as the cost of the phone is absorbed within the contract itself. A new contract every 12/18 months and a new phone at the same time. The rest of us have pay-as-you-go phones and natural wear and tear (my butterfingers) means a replacement every couple of years. I am amazed that people are willing to buy an iPhone at full price AND a pay for an expensive 2 year contract. No wonder Apple is making hatloads they have made people pay twice.
Haha, cause there's been no flooding up that way killing people or a billion other things that happen everywhere like say bombings, sword fights, all the good stuff. I seem to recall a heatwave killing a few people back a couple of years. Every place has it's natural and man-made disasters. This of course proves nothing as God created the world so his doorstep is some unknown place outside this universe so he can shit anywhere he likes here. I don't think bombings or sword fights (when was the last time that happened in the UK) count as 'acts of god'. And if you need any more taxi driver proof of God being English, two words - Killer Bees
And anyway that heatwave killed more people in France (more proof). This year he gave us a flood to make sure we didn't run out of water (a flood which hardly killed anyone in Britain) - God dislikes his garden (Kent) banning hosepipes you see.
"If god is in control of everything then why is it the most religious countries get hit with major earthquakes, flooding and tsunamis?" It's because god is British. - You don't shit on your own doorstep.
This is balance, showing all sides of an argument will annoy those on one side. Which is why the BBC probably is the best media source. It isn't perfect and just using it as your sole news source is unwise but it is better than the rest. (Channel 4 close second) I laugh whenever dickheads like Kelvin Mackenzie call the beeb "Blair's Broadcasting Corporation", while writing in The Sun (political allegiance New Labour). What's funny is that they are slightly pro-government but to whichever group is in power, which IS different to most commercial news outlets, which are partisan to a particular political party. This is hardly surprising being that the government renue the BBC's charter and therefore can remove the beeb from existence. The balance of power between government and the beeb is evidenced by the whole Hutton inquiry - one small error and the beeb got smashed.
What is disturbing is that the pro-government media outlet that is the beeb is also the most anti-government due to the fact they can be more unbiased than any other outlet. No other organisation could have Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight brutally grilling everyone in front of him, not just 'the other side', even his own bosses.
I thought it was illegal to lock phones to one provider in the UK(EU?)? Apple should be forced to remove the locks, I don't care if they made a deal or not, they shouldn't be allowed to do anything that anyone else isn't
You can get hold of SP2 CD's (I have two) they were quite prevalent on magazine covers and the like for a while. It's really important to have SP2 on before connecting to the net (especially as Blaster Worm and some other bigs are covered) and it does have a firewall (not that I would consider trusting that).
hurray , i can now buy a phone that has less features (no SMS, no MMS, no video calls) than my old Nokia did in 2001
Can someone verify this? (I'm feeling really lazy today) If the iPhone doesn't text, it is dead in the UK. DEAD. Everyone texts here. I can't see that Apple would make that big a mistake here, so even if the US one doesn't, I would expect the UK one to.
Another historical accident was that NVidia did, in fact, have a few source code releases way back. And every time they did, so it seemed, they got hit a few weeks later with a patent infringement lawsuit, usually from SGI. NVidia solved this latter problem largely through the expedient of buying SGI. A better bet would be how long before someone hits AMD with a patent lawsuit. - I say days.
It might sound faceious but this Franco (although Italian not Spanish) IS in a coalition with neo-facists The House Of Freedoms - In Italy Mussolini isn't really that dead. The problem is that this guy is making these choices Europe-wide.
Sorry, yes I meant 'set in the Spanish Civil War' as opposed to 'about'. Personally I felt it was most about the way that a young girl deals with an incredible trauma and stress. But that is great film making - it has more than a single subject.
Am I the only one to think that every movie that was nominated besides Pan's Labyrinth was a lot better and should've won instead?
In my book, Pan's Labyrinth was a jumbled, incoherent mess of a story that ultimately went nowhere. Sorry, but WW2 war stories and that kind of fairy tale fantasy just don't mix well, and Pan's Labyrinth was hopping from being one to the other all the time and in the end fell flat on both accounts. You're not thinking at all, it was about the Spanish civil war, not WW2. So I would assert that the film was intellectually above you. I am not going to explain why the two stories make sense together because that would spoil the film for those who are just reading this thread. But I suggest you read the imdb.com summaries.
Pan's Labyrinth, quite simply (for me) the best film since the turn of the millennium. No other film has so much and ties it together so well, both brutal with the viewer and the most wonderful climax (which I wont spoil)
It's such a shame that so many people wont watch it just because it is subtitled. I have friends who actually say that subtitles are "too much work"
I dunno, the Office, Cracker (it kinda got there), the Teletubbies (it pissed off the far right). The thing is I think Doctor Who is shit and around here that is a more dangerous statement than anything you have said.
Anyway, I've never been much of a cleese (python) fan - too silly for me. Faulty Towers is about my limit. Careful, questioning Monty Python on this site on a article about the BBC can get your geek hat taken away.
I don't need your say-so, or any corporation's. Just the law. Hard as it is to believe, the law is actually what gives us the right to do stuff, not your permission. I think recent evidence would seem to show that you *do* need their help. You shouldn't but you do.

I am right about the law, aren't I.
Real life copyright law, of course, resembles goblin law fairly closely. I wonder if this was a deliberate dig at copyright by the author.
Are you sure it wasn't praise? I don't know as I haven't read the HP books (or know much about JK's position)You can get hold of SP2 CD's (I have two) they were quite prevalent on magazine covers and the like for a while. To all replies, thank you.
I just couldn't see that Apple would have missed that one.

British, as much as we scorn at American culture, we aren't much better. If at all.

Aww, now you'll have the anti-silicate defamation league up in arms. They'll send Detritus around and he'll set you straight.
