They will read all my documents and give them to the government who will throw me in jail and rip off my toenails!!!!!!
If it sounds bad to you then don't use it. How hard is that? People will bemoan this like they did with Gmail and the contextual ads. If they aren't twisting your arm to use it why are you freaking out about it?
I don't know - the first thing I would do if I ever bought an iPod woudl be to trash the original headphones for some more generic-looking ones. Nothing says "hey, mug me, I have an iPod!" like those little white earbuds.
I don't know about everyone else by my broadband is expensive. I am not 100% that I want the entire neighborhood benefitting from my $45.00 a month to stream video and choke my connection. Remember that social ideas are always spoiled by the greedy - and that describes most of humanity.
Normal, everyday people are not going to get as excited about Linux as most of the people here. Other than the price, they are simply not interested in the benefits. However most people will pay through the nose for something as long as it "just works". They don't care if it is Windows or Linux. Can they still email? Can they still write Word documents? That is all that matters and Linux seems to be too much of a hassle (and lets be honest, for Average Joe, it is).
So in order to sell Linux to Average Joe he must not be able to see the seams. He must be able to do everything and more in OpenOffice that he was able to do in MS Word. Even if he never uses the advanced features - the fact that he knows they are not there makes him think that it is not as good.
I agree with you and all of the moderated posts above. I guess that my point is aimed more at the user who thinks that just because they may live in that concrete-reinforced home that they can leave their home, forget to shut the front door, and still be more secure.
I know that *nix is more secure from the ground up - but that does not mean that a stupid user will operate it in such a manner to keep it secure as it was on day 1.
Every piece of code is subject to exploits. Show me a program/OS that is 100% infallible and I will show you a liar. I think that the main reason OS/X (and *nix for that matter) was considered to be rock-solid is because very few people were taking shots at it. Now I do realize that *nix-based OSs do plug up the obvious holes that MS left open. But don't assume that just because no one has broken into your house yet that your house is completely secure.
A computer is only as secure as its maintainer. I am running a small network at home that has a mishmash of linux and Windows computers. Now is it right for me to say that my linux computers are more secure just because they are running linux? No, that's stupid. The same thing applies with this story - Macs can be exploited because that is the nature of the business. We usually find the holes because some numbnut exploits it.
You are absolutely right - we don't need no education, we just need a cell phone that will think for us and make common sense decision that we are incapable of. Silly me! I thought that cell phones were for making phone calls!
Mine was a 486 with 33Mhz. I loved the "Turbo" button that allowed me to power down to 8Mhz for running older applications (that way I could play "Red Baron" and not have the plane moving too fast).
On a side note (and to further plug trillian), my previous employer paid for the developers to use trillian pro. It came with a plugin called rendezvous that would scan the LAN and automatically add other rendezvous users to your buddy list. Very handy and pretty cool.
I meant upgrade the hardware
I'll bet that this is not an idealistic change but a thrifty one. I certainly wouldn't want to upgrade all the workstations!
Does the GPL Violate Sarbanes-Oxley?
[E]ssentially counsels users of the free software license that they have no need to worry.

What is the use of slashdot if submitters are just going to copy sentences and sentiments FTA?"

There is a small bottle containing a red fluid on a shelf in Sheffield University's microbiology laboratory.
Is that like a ship in a bottle?

Definitely - since the original footage of the '69 moon landing was such high quality too!
Why is this news? It would be more interesting to read a comparison of my left and right hands.
I will compare a LCD computer screen to a newspaper:

Wow - I think you're on to something here!
Okay - but are they equal in sale price?
What weighs more, a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers? They both weigh the same but you do end up with a lot more feathers.

a polite human being.
Seriously folks! How hard is it to turn off the ringer? Are we so daft these days that our phones have to be polite for us?

yeah - java is pretty fast as long as you are running Gnome.
I think "spun" is the word you are searching for...
I know that I have said this before but if you want a web-based chat client you really ought to check out meebo. Quite impressive really...
