HorsePoopies. Of course one should live up to one's obligations - the guy (bloke) should fry if he's done the U.S. wrong. Although I'm not sure who has committed the crime here. Was it the chap in his girlfriend's aunt's flat somewhere in London? That sure is a long arm he must have to have committed such a foul deed on US property in the US. Or was it the security homeboys in the US who built, what I assume, is secure systems for NASA and/or military/government system? Better not let any middle east TERRORISTS know your systems are vulnerable. So lets see how the European courts play this out. And yes I will let our politicians know I think this extradition crap is crap (sorry - I just love recursion)
I'm still trying to figure out what the heck
"scientists at the Space Nanotechnology Laboratory at MIT "
is?? Are they like...A small lab on the space station??? Huh?
Whether its air, water, oil, real estate, donuts, trees, gold, or any (such) commodity they all belong to humanity, not individuals or corporations or any government or country or political or power group. Same with intangibles. That ugliest of phrases 'intellectual property' is an intangible. Whether tangible or intangible these commodities can be distributed in a fair manner, ie those producing/growing/extracting the commodities can be 'paid' for their efforts/resources. How this distribution takes place can be done by consensus. That wonderful entity called the internet provides consensus. Lets start taking our resources and enterprise back from the avariced, power hungry and entitled individuals who, besides destroying the planet, are making life miserable for the worlds populations. FOSS is an example of resource/enterprise firmly back in the hands of no-one and everyone. Likewise Creative commons. Even lawyers, politicos and the ilk are getting on board. The IP goombas are running scared. Lets make sure they keep running.
Right now I'm watching Cable TV - the weather channel on my NTSC tv - Sony 32" I picked up recently on sale. I'm feeding cable to 1Ghz PC with 720Meg ram 40gig hd and AGP Radeon AIW. Can only get this sucka running win98 - I cant get any Linux distro to run this hardware combo due to fact that X server will not give me a video selection THAT WORKS WITH THE RADEON FOR S-WIDEO OUT TO THE SONY. ARGHHHH ETC. However I am currently downloading the new Fedora 9 via bit torrent. Simultaneously I have nasa tv running on realplayer. I end up watching nasa most of time, switching to cable tv for 'interesting' stuff, then usually go back to nasa, or occasionally check out download status email or go surfing. I tend to switch out of TV at start of commercial, or when some interesting event happens on nasa. The ultimate surfers paradise. My wife watches cable on XP system media centre. She usually watches PBS or TVO (Canadian PBS in Ont. Canada) or BBC. She uses the XP as a DVR if not in mood for TV watching and will play solitaire while recording. She usually watches commercials, if any (or self-o-mmercials?). Her biggest nouveau tv thrill is Free downloadable content (Grey's anatomy etc). All this on a 600K 'low' speed cable feed from Jolly Rogers. My next upgrade is to get ATSC tuners for the PC's for 'free' OTA 'digital' teevee.
We are both 'seniors' (60+) and enjoy our 'entertainment'. We don't mind paying for our entertainment whether it be print or electronic. I will buy the Discovery 'Earth' DVD's (blu-ray) when and if I get a PS3. I will let my purchasing power vote by buying DRM free content. I will vote for content that is freely (as in speech) available to all. I will actively participate in the publicly(non-governmental) owned and democratically run information infrastructure that is free from private ownership, greed and control, and is free from governmental and bureaucratic control and rot. The web is an extension of our freedoms, and is definitely worth fighting for. I have lived through a generation that saw private industry co-opt the telecomm arena, both cable (teevee!!) and telco for greed profit and control. Lets fight to prevent this from happening again
Keep your friends close, but your enemies even closer. - attributed to SUN-TSU. A quick web search of his (SUN-TZU) quotes reads like a litany of BALLMER/M$ tactics.
If I make a widget from wood (free as in I don't have to buy it - trees were here long before economists) and sell it for a loonie (buck) the total cost is zero. - my labour - $1.00 minus selling price $1.00. The money part is just there so that corporations and governments can extract profits and taxes - I mostly don't have a problem with that. That $1.00 from my buyer represents wealth from him, thus the transfer of wealth, some of which is taken for tax and profit. IANAE (economist), nor do I wish to be one, let alone talk to one, apparently with some holding differing views. In some quarters, I understand, they are even held in high esteem. However it seems to me that the wealth of billionaire bill, and others in the software, entertainment and industries of similar ilk, have acquired rather large amounts of wealth, and THAT don't grow on trees. So it must have come from somewhere. Some from me, definitely. Some from those more impoverished, definitely. I would rather see, and would trust more, if that wealth remain in the hands of the impoverished, rather than take a circuitous route through the Gates foundation whereby 'strings' may be attached. Open source certainly seems to fit the er, 'bill' in this case. Seems fairly logical to me. I certainly don' eed no steenken degree in economics to tell me this. But, just to show you I;m not closed on this I can dig up one of my texts from the '70s, or would a more recent suggestion from you be more enlightening?
And therein lies the crux of the problem. If the enterprises that BUY the software dont have to pay for it then they will SAVE that money and increase their bottom line. This money thing is a zero sum game. All that is happening now is that the vast majority of all this loot is ending up in the pockets of billionaire bill and his cohorts. This wealth has been EXTRACTED from users (poor and rich alike). Try looking at this as a black box with inputs and outputs only. For the poor, open source allows them to keep this extracted wealth, even to pay themselves for additional open source development etc., etc. The mind boggles. Will future society be like that portrayed in Aliens or Star Trek? Society has been co-opted by the self-aggrandizing. The web, open source and hopefully other 'open' endeavours are beginning to RETURN CONTROL to us shmucks. Democracy and Enterprise (Capitalism) have proven themselves over time. Lets take them back from the turds.
Ok so ro understand all this Hoopla I need to know 3 things.
! Where is the centre of the three dimensional universe (The one at least I live in)? If none why not.
2. Is there a frame of reference in this three dimensional universe that I can call 'standing still' or zero or absolute zero motion? ditto 1.
3. I found this phone left to me by aliens. It is unbreakeable, ie. it cannot be examined, it never breaks down, it doesn't need batteries (unlike some other phones) so never runs down. It can replicate itself at will, so I can give as many copies to as many entities as I want. It allows two way video/audio/information (including translation functions) transfer conversations from anywhere in this or other universes. It's only function is to allow conversations between two (for now) entities in the universe(s) to communicate NOW. It is, therefore, I assume, not constrained by the speed of light because two people, light years apart, can communicate as though the were sitting together at the same desk. It has a display that shows each persons 'local' time ( say some sort of accurate timer (hydrogen atom ticks?) since the 'big bang').
I've just given a copy of the phone to my ladyfriend named Bright who travels much faster than light. She has just left home in a relative way, but may return home so we can re-do the previous night.
Can anyone explain how I could use this phone ( and Brights) to explain WTF is going on, what I would see on the display, etc, etc. Its all free open sourced hardware/software and uses the free inter/intra universe(s) net. It apparently has other functions I have not yet uncovered. BTW its named ePhone, apparently after Einstein.
Also this month (April), Rogers is implementing capping on high speed Cable internet access. There will be billed charges starting now so that one can see traffic overage. These charges will be refunded on the bill for three months, then (July) they will not be refunded. Yahoo.
Having been in the IT for some 50+ years now and retired, I can say that no software 'environment' is ANY guarantee of a reasonably 'secure' career, even one based on m$ wares z?. I can see this one coming... the end of the m$ hegemony. All the m$ money backing losing causes such as HD-DVD, buying off officials to prop up a product that isn't all that good (windows et al) spells the end of the m$ empire. At least French SUN kings and perhaps mssr Gates, who is now bailing from his company, can repeat the same phrase - Apres moi - le deluge.
As systems guy from the 60's to 2005, I've had plenty of projects cancelled (yes - some were even due to mismanagement on my part). It's devastating on people - mostly those involved in project. One of most fundamental reasons for cancelling was bean-counter input along with cohorts in top management - mostly marketing types. So after I swore revenge for such dastardly deeds, I began to open source my projects. Or was it I wished I had? I think I may have started the open source movement. Hmmm.
Anyhow the open source movement is now becoming the 'New Paradigm'. Software - hardware - telecomms - the legal profession - the oldest profession - the list is endless...
So I propose all open source types get in on this project - buy the thing - whatever it is and launch it - buy the space station...
Arghhhh..

I'm sure your company is getting a lot of nasty mail over this one. Deservedly so. There are a few times I'm not proud to be Canadian. This is one of them. The last time I felt this disgusted was when Diefenbaker canceled the Arrow. Sincerely; Frank Kokot Oshawa
- dad(or mom) can I rent a hi def movie?
- sure kid
- whats best hd-dvd or blu-ray?
- we got dvd's at home - probably same as hd-dvd; those marketing
types'll try pulling... - get blu-ray

No. The Internet began Neutral... If the money-grubbers want to co-opt the Internet, then they'll have to overturn NN, not the other way around.
Congratulations America. Now lets see if our Canadian FCC (CRTC) slams our own arrogant ISP's - Bell, Rogers, etc...
Doh!!

06/06/08. I hereby declare the end of the M$ hegemony. M$ is dead. Long live M$. Goodbye Bill.

In the C&D letter to IMSLP regarding copywrite violations http://imslpforums.org/Second%20U-E%20Cease%20and%20Desist%20Letter.pdf - that are approved in EU imply a similar ruling in Canada - as noted in the C&D letter; I wonder if a similar arrangement applies to patents?
