  2. can you record the shows using Direc TV PVR? on CBS, NBC to Offer TV Shows for 99 Cents · · Score: 3, Interesting

From the article "The new DirecTV DVR comes with a hard drive that holds 160 hours of programming. One hundred hours are available for subscribers to record and store programs. The remaining 60 hours will be used by DirecTV to download programs that can be viewed on demand for an extra fee."

So they are recording a few shows from NBC, push them to your PVR, then let you pay money to watch them. Are you able to record them using the PVR in the first place for free? Or does the software prevent you. IF they prevent you from recording them yourself, this could be a preview of the boradcast flag, well a proprietary version of it.

The details on speed and price are not quite correct in the parent post. You can read them here:

    http://www22.verizon.com/fiosforhome/channels/fi os /root/package.asp

Verizon plans to cover 3 million homes next year, which probably requires a bit more fiber than SBC's 40K miles! Plus, while speeds are limited to about 20-30Mbps per home today with the electronics Verizon is deploying, the fiber in place will support MUCH more, 1Gbps / house is being worked on in the labs. Sort of makes DSL and wireless sound like stop gap measures doesn it?

This will be great for competition once people realize they can do this... Right now many are probably unaware of this.

The section is entitled "Don't forget 3G" but it is all about SMS, which is more of a 2G wireless technology, heck even if it was supposed to be about GPRS that is a 2.5G wireless thing. 3G might not be dead (or even barely born yet really) but SMS is not the proof of this! As far as how to charge, well bandwidth and IP address are both limited resources, so both will get charged for. And since it seems broadband providers in the US are loosing money, prices very may well go up for people who use more of their resources.

The key will be where all your information is stored and the amount of control over it. And clearly choice in where it is stored (MS or SUN, or hopefully other places) is a good idea.

It is likely that you will be able to remain anonymous some times. This will put and end to the process of lying about who you are, which is not really useful in the greater scheme of things.

  25. Your mileage will vary, check DSL reports. on Can Cable Really Be Slower Than 56K? · · Score: 1

I am pretty sure that no one supports service level agreements for home DSL or Cable connections. With an SLA you would be guaranteed X bits/s at a minimum, or be due money back, or parhaps X bits/s 95% of the time, etc etc. Better service promises would cost more money. Currently phone and cable companies make some effort to maintain connections and speed but are under little obligation to meet exact specifications.

The only reason for slowdown (besides weather related things) is over subscription. With Cable since it is a directly shared medium it is easy, with DSL it is less likely, but DSL connections are often concentrated together with your neighbors, and certainly eventually you need to talk to the rest of the internet and that is shared so there is always a bottleneck. Check dslreports.com for cable and DSL reviews in your area. If you can't deal with some slow downs run a wire to everyone in the world you want to talk to, then you will be all set. (which is sort of what the plain old telephone system was, but is becoming less and less so every day)
