I didn't ask you to name all of example companies. Just name one. Can you do that? Name one where the CIO hired the brother of the girl he is banging. Dude, just name one.

Siriuskase, your post is an interesting one but I don't understand the jab against corporations that you threw in at the end. Corporations are merely voluntary associations between individuals. Buying products from a corporation is voluntary. Becoming an employee of a corporation is voluntary. That sounds like a model of a free and open society to me. Nobody is coerced into any transactions with a corporation. That's a lot different then dealing with an oppressive government.
Did you see this in a movie somewhere or can you name a real company where the CIO is hiring the brother of the chick he is banging? Name the company right now or we'll know your full of it.
Do you have any data that shows that Mono deployment in the enterprise is increasing, relative to java deployment? Because, in my experience of 8 years of enterprise java, Mono is not making any strides. It's a backwater that a few people are toiling in.
Fears about the current government of China are well founded. Perhaps the decision to exclude Lenovo where inspired by this man. If so, then I applaud.
Check out Circuit City's balance sheet. They have over $600 million in cash with only $50 million in long term debt. They have a lot of liquid assets available to finance the legal battle if that's what they choose to do.
I agree with you. I'm always surprised when so called progressives want to dramatically increase the tax on gasoline consumption. This only hurts those folks at the lowest end of the economic scale that have to spend a higher proportion of their income on gasoline. Take, for example, a recent immigrant who is starting his own gardening business. He has to drive his own truck to do his business. He's barely breaking even and then you double his fuel costs. Now you've taken a hard working free man, a potential employer, and you've wrecked his business. Now he'll be on welfare and haunting the ER everytime he has a cold. How is that progressive?
If I go to work at a company, do I bear the responsibility of the consequences of the decisions that company makes? It seems to me that if I take a job that is capable of being outsourced then I share in accepting the consequences when that outsourcing happens. The arrangements in the UK or the USA between and employer and an employee are voluntary. If you don't want your job to be outsourced then don't take a job that can be outsourced.
It will get issued but it won't get widely adopted. RMS has become impatient in this quest for social revolution and now he's decided to wield a bigger club. I don't think many others, who write and widely distribute highly useful software, will pick it up and join him.
I love the idea of the Internet as Sovereign. However, I don't think it would be accepted by countries whose governments are highly dependent on limiting their citizens access to information and free expression. What would happen to the great firewall of China in this scenario? Could the average citizen in Iran download western tv shows without fear of the morals police?
Many resumes I read these days proudly trumpet UML and RUP as a key skill. Those resumes cause me to either pass altogether on that candidate or grill them harder on fundamental computer science during the interview. Many of these folks can't tell me when to use a hash table vs a linked list. So, some hiring managers have not drunk the UML coolaid.
Why do you have an expectation of privacy for space on a hard drive paid for by your employer? Why don't you just store private data on a device that you personally have paid for and leave your employer's gear for work purposes only?
Why would you stay in a job that makes you miserable? Your relationship with that employer is a voluntary choice that you made and you are free to unmake it anytime.

That's not true at the company I work at. At least half of the new hires this year are 40+ with a handful being 50+.

Are you implying that News Corp is sensationalistic? Where is the evidence for that?

If you are a good programmer then you have options as to who your employer is. Given those options, why stay at an employer than makes you miserable?
If things are that messed up at your company then why do you stay there?
It will not be bad at all because nobody will go the AOL properties to see the ads.

Eric,
I hear a lot of bitterness in your post. Please tell us what alternative to capitalism that you prefer.

Ok, when I come to work for you must provide terabyte for personal use. Anything less is abridging my human dignity.
How much space is for your personal use? If you ran a company, would you spell that amount out in the employment contract?
Does storing personal encrypted data on someone else's computer qualify as a basic human right?
plasmacutter,
Why do you have an expectation of privacy for space on a hard drive paid for by your employer? Why don't you just store private data on a device that you personally have paid for and leave your employer's gear for work purposes only?
So, Lumpy,
Does this mean that in the mean time, until DRM is dropped, that you'll just continue to steal the same content?
Why would you stay in a job that makes you miserable? Your relationship with that employer is a voluntary choice that you made and you are free to unmake it anytime.
I agree. Your employment relationship is voluntary. Why do you stay in a job that makes you miserable?
You draw a big distinction between 'good for business' and 'morale'. If morale is not based on business success then what is it based on?
