My new laptop has become my primary machine at home for coding, gaming, blogging, etc.

The desktop has been relegated to filesharing and being used by the wife.

    Yes, it's becoming more popular.

My wife, family, and a few friends mainly read my blog, and that's okay.

Believe me, Nintendo will NOT release a new 8-bit system. If you think they will do this to fight off someone who can sell a couple hundred clones at $20 a pop, you're crazy.

They're going to sell the 8-bit games as a tool to sell their new platforms, period.

You're defeating your own argument, anyways. The games are just as antiquated as the consoles and "are going to become increasingly hard to find". These will not be reproducible by any third party, only Nintendo.

If you want to know how the MMO world works Blizzard would be a good place to start. They have so far to my knowledge, taken what they saw as mistakes of other MMO companies and stayed away from them for the most part.
They certainly polished it and refined it. They didn't necessarily remove the flab that a lot of gamers tire of, ie. travel, raiding emphasis, phat-loot, etc.

If anyone innovated and removed the "mistakes" it's NCSoft with Guild Wars. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but they targetted the PvP aspect of MMOs and focus their development there. I think they did a good job.

I guess I'm also missing the point of your post.

You're saying the choice would be between an 8-bit Nintenclone or a next-generation system that just happens to also play 8-bit Nintendo cartridges?

I can't imagine any next-gen console developer other than Nintendo themselves wanting people to play classic Nintendo games. If that's the case, then the Nintendo Revolution is going to be offering the 8-bit games without the need of a cartridge.

Also, instead of buying that $20 imaginary clone system, just buy an actual Nintendo. They're available right now.

    What am I missing here?

Actually, it appears this has already happened. The developer released a new "island" in the form of a space resort. The space resort features a unique spawning point for new users and lots of other goodies that the first island didn't have.

..and get this: the space resort sold for $100,000 USD.

The product can keep changing, though. It's easy in a virtual game environment to create the next big fad.

Give the next coolest island a special trainer that can teach people how to fly, and people will flock to that island, raising the initial sale value.

Of course the smart buyers will notice this trend and figure out that there may not be a lot of equity in a virtual property that is constantly one-upped.

Now they can create another virtual island that's even sweeter and sell it for even more money.

    copy virtual_island1 virtual_island2

Not a bad deal for the island-buyer either, as long as they've determined the risks, ie. the game's subscriber base withering away.
