On a related note... if MS comes and threatens that you are using a free product that has their patent, is there any reason you can't just tell them to "blow off"?

"blow off" can also be interpretted to "take it up with the company that developed it", "provide proof that our closed-source code makes use of open-source code that you have debatedly patented" or simply state that everything must go through a lawyer if M$ is threatening court action.

If M$ comes to you and states that they want money for something they didn't do, and you give them money, do you still get to bitch about it?

My experience is that it isn't where it needs to be, and that it will continue to just almost get there. I just don't see people building the things that NEED to be built. We discussed the newest Linux at work the other day: It deals will PS3 software, it will have a 3-d desktop, it will not reliably auto-mount a usbdisk. The day Linux can read: a new harddrive that also has the name "LogVolGroup00" a usbdisk after pulling it out 5 times my mp3 player (30 gig DRM-free Phillips GoGear from 2 years ago) *reliably wireless network - admittedly, I haven't tried to fight this one yet I will switch to using nothing but Linux. Really, it does almost everything else. Bash-shell programming is great, auto-backup is great, locate/find are great, Open Office is great, Firefox is already my primary/only browser, I am a console-gamer now, Winamp works just fine. It can do almost everything, but the things that it can't do ARE CRITCAL to day-to-day functionality for me.

Like it or not, this is an information war just as much as it is a religious one. Terrorists/Guerilla troops never purposely attack strong locations. If we can mislead them into thinking a strong location is weak, they will attack it (and hopefully lose). If we can mislead them into thinking a weak location is strong, they will not attack it. It is that simple.

What you imply is that terrorists drive down the street weilding rocket launchers and attacking every target, regardless of tactical importance. In reality, they seem to be targetting places where economics (Trade Centers), politics/leaders (UN buildings) and transportation (planes, trains) are located.

If you put up a facade that one particular UN building has impossibly tight security, do you honestly think that they will target it because the "Great Satan" is there?
