  2. but why...? on Does Having Fun Make IT More Enjoyable? · · Score: 1

" Does having fun make ANY job more enjoyable?.................. *yes*. "

Having fun implies we are doing it because we want to as opposed to because we have to. It signifies choice, even if it is an illusion of choice. It is the difference with allowing the horse to walk to the water and drink versus dragging it to the river and forcing its head into the water. It would die before it drinks. Regardless of how thirsty it might be.

      Its xmas morning. I'm thirsty.

  3. what about power? on MySQL Beats Commercial Databases in Labs Test · · Score: 1

from TFA: "bringing administration and configuration within the realms of the novice" and "Obviously ease of configuration and administration is paramount -- the in-house staff must be able to easily enter and update data, while the novice administrator must be able to make minor changes to the database on the fly."

Is it Just me or are we awarding our winners based on how easy it is to use, as compared to how much more power it places in our hands?

then again I'm cheap and would most likely get one if its cheap.

  5. first self aware? on Robot Demonstrates Self-awareness · · Score: 1

I remember in a Intelligent Agents class we were told of a computer system (OpenCYC i think) that was able to learn, mostly through asking questions. One of the first questions it asked was "am i alive?" Just makes you think i guess. IMHO, if we have strict laws on human cloning and stem cell research it is only fair that it soon be time to have those limitations on AI research as well. On one hand we say skynet is far away from ever happening but there is no other industry as unpredictable and amazingly fast as the computer one.

  11. Ubuntu and Debian on Talking With Debian's Branden Robinson · · Score: 2, Interesting

So much said here about Debian and Ubuntu. I love Ubuntu. Yes its a spinoff from Debian but Mandrake was a Spinoff from RedHat before it went solo. Ubuntu is good not only because of the cutting edge technology it gets from Debian but also because of the management, marketting, and administration. A well engineered hybrid of technology and usability. Which sure as hell beats replies from Debian elitists who mostly go "RTFM. F-cake!" (i'm still hurting from that). With the experience Ubuntu gets from Debian, it would not be surprise if they able to go on for a long time even if Debian drops off.

  12. World First? on Macedonia Deploys 5,000 Ubuntu Desktops in Schools · · Score: 1

Makes me wonder if it's possible to create a country that has 100% of its computers running on OSS. And methinks Ubuntu is a good choice here. Check out http://www.edubuntu.org/, Mark Shuttleworth seems genuinely interested in developing OSS for the not-so-developed countries. Its not just about the technology or the beauty or KDE vs Gnome, I think the philosophy of ubuntu fits in well with the market needs and the objectives here.

Survival of the fittest anyone?

Besides, if it's in the genes then /. would have had ancestors who woulda been too friggin lazy to uh... procreate anyway.
