don't get me wrong, I'm a gun person myself, but one of the first things I learned to follow to the letter was to keep my DAMN FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE the weapon.
When the PS2 was first released it was a loss leader for Sony too..
You really think the PS3 won't do the same?
Oh yeah wait, I forgot this is Slashdot, home of supposed Linux fanatics, yet more than 70% of the visitors to the site are still Windows users... imagine that.
1.) You don't have to like it, but it is the way of the future. I really cannot see a family gathered around a video iPod to watch movies on a 2" screen... Right now it IS looking good for Microsoft as the Xbox 360 does a lot more than previous gen consoles do, and it looks good.
2.) The first Xbox was, the 2nd one isn't. Not even close to a PC. The point is, Microsoft didn't dube anyone into buying the Xbox, they brought plenty of content as well, and as the sales of Halo2 proved.
3.) It's a NAME, hell RedHat and SUSE have done the same thing...
4.) The Library may be ports, but most of them will be on the Xbox 360 first and then ported elsewhere. The point is its a HELL of a lot easier to develop for a console, especially the Xbox and Xbox 360 than it is for any other console let alone a PC.
5.) All consoles are just more of the same. The Xbox 360 does bring a new suite of features over and above the PS2, Xbox and Nintendo Game Cube. Right now the Xbox 360 IS the absolute top hardware in the console market and will continue to be so for 6 to 8 months. Even then, the PS3 keeps getting stuff chopped out of it to make the delopment cycle and to keep costs down (even though its looking like the PS3 may be $500+).
6.) Again, so what? Isnt' that what Sony is doing? Nintendo? RedHat? SUSE? Sun? Steve Jobs also spent nearly A BILLION dollars marketing the iPod and iTunes, don't even think of kidding yourself otherwise.
AMD sued because they couldn't market their product.
No other reason.
We all know AMD has superior technology and will continue to do so until well into 2006, but the REAL reason for the lack of sales is nothing more than a terrible marketing program.
With the AMD lawsuit against Intel (which I think is stupid, the main reason AMD doesn't sell well is crappy marketing), Intel will have a hard time retaliating against Dell.
More lower priced systems.
I really want one of those XPS systems with a nice AMD processor...
And of all three consoles, it was still in last place, beat by Microsoft's very first console ever...
What is unusual this time around in the Console wars, is for the first time ever, the market supported three consoles. Every other time/revision, the market self-limited itself to two consoles, one that did really well and one that did OK...
Read the article where it says:
All will run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Center operating system

If said experiment was repeated, funded by say RedHat and they found the same results, do you think they would have the acument to publish them?
PLEASE tell me he isn't a gun rights type. He cannot even hold a pistol safely...
This is Slashdot.
The world would stop or sumthin if the blowhards actually did what you asked.
Or worse yet, drink themselves into a coma when they come to the sudden realization that Windows isn't as bad as they seem to think it is.
Mostly, becuase unlike ESR, he doesn't seem to have an agenda... Unlike ESR the Dr. doesn't work for Microsoft or any OSS org...
Looks like a bunch of honest and detailed answers with no dodging...

Which also means you are three years behind in features.
Not every company likes to say behind the times.
As you said, teh retail numbers really don't count because they DON'T include Dell (or any other mail/web order sales outlet).
So it's not looking at all the real numbers, only a small subsection of them.
So says AMD.

Bingo... I don't know how much more clear I could have been.
Perhaps the AMD fanboism is strong around here...

We still have the Linux people at our office saying that Microsoft can't do enterprise environments either...
