So many people "diss" gentoo because either they are afraid to use it, or consider it a waist of time. I'll admit that gentoo would be incredible if it also had an i386 compilation of all programs, but, gentoo is about customization. Ubuntu, you get all that prepackaced crap, a large program. Gentoo, fits on a usb stick... ok, old usb sticks:-p, those 256mb usb sticks.. if you want it to.
I use gentoo on 4-5 computers. I've even got my own little lame compile cluster:-p
But, I don't know how the thread says "No reason to switch to 'secret sauce'"
You don't "switch" versions of gentoo, because you consistently upgrade. I'm already at the version of "secret sauce" because I update my system periodically, automatically, while I'm away from my pc.
don't bash gentoo, learn to luv it:-p
I'm sorry, but you've only stated a part of the problem. The worst tech thing... clearly, by all means, Windows. Anything else can barely compare to the crappiness of Windows, expecially M.E.
The laws on copyright infringement are ridiculous. I understand if you are making a profit stolen ideas, like stealing the clap on idea and making money on it. But, for the average schmoe who steals a song, I think the punishment should be the same as the shoplifter. Ban computer access for a week or something, but dont' give me a 719085798 dollar fine!
Yes, these laws are going too far. American Congress is going too far. Where's our American Revolution that is supposed to happen every 100 years to keep the people straight?
I completely agree. Students should be expected to push their limits, not be crushed underneath them. I've learned a heck of a lot more by testing my home personal security, and the schools security than I have in my study halls (after I've finished my homework)!
Whats the big deal.
I completey agree with that statement. Because you may have more knowledge than an administrator you are considered an extreme security threat. They found out one kid knew how to crack a teachers password and change grades, and they expelled him, just because he knew how to do it.
At our school there is no specific rule against proxies. In fact, there are very few rules, but one that protects the school nonetheless. In the computer contract agreement, it basically says they can revoke your privleges for school computers with our without any reason. Basically, anything they don't like you can get punished for, whether or not it is explicity ruled out. (Not a single comment about a proxy, but if you use one your banned.)
Yes, I do live in wisconsin and were paying around 120 bucks a month for basic cable, internet, and charter phone. They REFUSE (even though I don't think they are allowed by law) to sell us internet without cable, and the phone was a bit cheaper than vonage... Pisses me off though.
Here in the US the Cable/DSL companies charge boatloads and agree not to encroach in each other's territories because it is more profitable when there is no competition. They each take half a zip code, but at any one location you cannot get both services. (Therefore avoiding the FCC? rules of having more than one company in a zip code.) So technically their is competition within the zip code, but not at each household. What a crock, where's my subsidized wifi!:-D
I doubt anytime soon that we will have free/subsidized broadband. I do however hope that the companies are forced to compete with each other, and that WIFI starts to become free from individuals/companies across the US.
I see value in these DVDs. In fact, I even downloaded Wikipedia once, something like 7gig for just the text, made an exact mirror on my own laptop. It is nice to use when you have linux, and bad wireless drivers hehehe. My internet is so intermittent at school, that I just use downloaded content to review during school. I even used the articles while I was on a 10 hour drive from Wisconsin to New York. My neighbor would love something like this too because he uses dial up, and I think he's still using a 33k modem lol. In fact, I'm downloading it now. There are all sorts of people who can use these. People on airplanes, buses, at a cafe with no wifi, etc. Although, in 20 years there will not be much need for these (I should hope), but they are nice to have now.
Nanotubes have been around for some time now, but these look like they are structured differently and with different materials. Although, I do believe the problem isn't so much as "efficiency" as it is "price." Once solar energy becomes competitive/better than fossil fuels, I think we will see a huge increase in hydrogen storage (for batteries) and solar energy, along with wind mills for n ighttime power and cloudy days.
In fact, they even have clear glass windows that college solar energy as well (might have been on slashdot?) We definitely have the ability, were just willing to spend the resources.
thats right..
I still run windows 2k alogn with gentoo linux...
but I've also got a few boxes around here, (and neighbors) with 95/98 on 233 amds..
I remember thinking it was cool my friend had a 333, and he still has it..
I do not see Vista selling well until SP1 comes out. Right now there is no need for vista, and supposedly DX10 just got hacked, before DX10 games came out! So again, no need for vista, nor its bugs. It is also ridiculously confusing with its many different versions, some of which less capable than XP. I'd like to see M$ burn, but it won't happen yet.
Idiocy:lack of knowledge.
somebody knows that you are driving from Chicago to Detroit. This person puts a bag of weed or cocaine underneath the rear bumper. Because you didn't know it could be stored there, nor that it was there, you are held liable for possession of cocaine/weed when you get pulled over for speeding. Its the same thing, either way your screwed.
Thats like saying because you wanted to get a hand gun, your going to be a school shooter. There are TONS of open WAPs because people don't know better. It gives me the desire to go from home to home and do child porn searchs and FBI searches from all the homes to force this decision to get overturned. I mean come on.
I don't know whether or not the guy was innocent/guilty but I do think that this "probable cause" thing is complete crap. If I see cops going down the streets with laptops I'll chase em away and sue the city! Mental anguish or something. (luckily, I don't live in texas;))
If they make openWAP's probable cause, then what about a coffee place where you get free wifi. Will the owner be held responsible for this customers actions? Will you be *REQUIRED* to get a permit for an open WAP. This is complete crap.
Hmm, I'm curious as to whether they knew that they would take a hit for Q1 but think that there will be brighter days ahead. Although, it doesn't look like they are going to be doing anything except reduce expenditures. But uhm, 600million in expenditures can't be stopped. However, their merger with ATI may help with some new technologies. Intel seems to really be putting the pressure on AMD as of late with a lot of new architectures, but if AMD can get one extremely efficient/cheap/powerful processor that can dominate the x86 market, they will recoup a lot of their market share, and possibly take some more.
I like AMD and their products, and I think that they have some new products that haven't been seen yet, but will be seen in Q2.But another beating like this, and they'll need some serious help.
Actually, there is a long term substitute position nearby because the teacher left on paternity leave (his wife is about to give birth, or has).
I do think that maternity/paternity leave should be allowed for BOTH genders (maybe more for the female because there is definitely a lot more strain IMO for the female in child birth;)
also, I did not mean "YOU" as in females, I ment as in all people. I know too many teenage parents, some try to be responsible, some don't care. (I mean, two kids before your 18, thats ridiculous)
I do think many women are treated unfairly. In waitressing jobs/waitering jobs, men often get tipped more because its a natural instict of "men are the caregivers and need money."
It was also mentioned that men and women of the same position get paid differently. That may be true in some circumstances, but not always. Men and women often choose different career paths too, which is why averages can be down. I believe it was reported the female makes 75cents to every dollar a man makes. meh, what do I care, no woman will ever want to marry me so I'll never have to get into this argument!:-(
Every OS is constantly trying to increase its grafix capablilities. Windows 95 = super fast and sweet installer, new kind of OS never seen before... (Brilliant Idea), Windows 98, minor updates/fixes with more hardware support and better grafix rendering.. less dos intertwined, then 2000 (sort of NT), similar to 98, a little more stable, new framework, even less dos, yet another new grafix rendering engine, then.. *shudder* M.E. (I tried installing it on 3 computers, BSOD on all three during INSTALL), followed by XP, more grafix, but at heavy CPU usage (I turn them of on all computers for more Win2k feel and less drag, much quicker), and now Vista, with its beryl like effects that have been cut in half (huge memory hog and processor hog)
With each generation of OS's, more capable detailed graphics will be intertwined into the structure of the OS (or if like linux, into xorg/xfree)
However, atm a 1.4ghz underclocked to 1ghz with 1gig ram, and 128mb vid) works quite well at handling all linux based operations..
(some slowness with HP products in win2k)
However, on my 1.6ghz laptop with 1gig ram and 32mb video card, I can't run much at all. In fact, even firefox is slow (in a light WM like xfce)
More power can always be used, more power, MORE POWER, RAUGH RAUGH RAUH! (home improvement..)
Although I think you have gone a little far with your statement (and have become flamebaited) I must agree that all this "retribution" is getting a little out of hand. Unfortunately, a man (like myself) can say nothing about it without be called a sexist. On the squawkbox or whatever news channel that is, there was recently a WOMAN complaining about the government getting in the affairs of women and how much they get paid. The govt wants to help women have increased wages so that they earn the same amount as a man. However, what hasn't crossed their minds is that the kind of work they do is FAR different from the average work of a man. Many men work in dangerous jobs such as construction, roofing, etc. Many women work as clerks/teachers/support calls/etc and work with more flexible hours.
I do realize that there are quite a few single mothers out there (of course, one could also blame the teenagers that are having sex at such a young age). In fact, I recently discovered that two of my former gradeschool classmates (like, from 4 years ago? I'm senior in highschool now) are pregnant, and one of which for the second time!
I personally think retribution is going a little too far for sexism. I mean, look at these women who marry millionaires and famous actors, then divorce, and NEVER get another job so they can just soak up their divorced husbands money. However, these are the women that do not care about equality, but rather themselves. Many of the women that are concerned about equality are those that do not have it.
Unfortunately, some take equality to the extent of give us everything so that we dominate males.
I do not think that daycare is something the business should have to pay for. You should be PREPARED to have a child, and not already knowing of a neighbor or a daycare center in the area is a serious lapse in judgement. But who am I but a senior in highschool. I say it as I see it.
The article itself mentions that other drugs will fail. We need to eradicate HIV entirely, like small pox.
However, this could be difficult to do.
Jokingly, take everyone with HIV and put them on their own island, would be a quick fix. The next reasonable idea, nanobots!
heh, rather, Vista is more like a bus that gets hijacked by malicious coders:-D
also, look at Walmart and their "use IE!"
Its not that people don't know about firefox, its that people get paid off by M$, or uhm..
well, I guess there ARE stupid people that don't know about firefox...
hmm...
Let me ask some fellow highschool students.
ok back, uhm... after a quick survey..
Uhm, 2 in about 15 students know.. and thats including me..
Alright, its that people don't know about alternatives because they have become mindless M$ drones.
It is extortion, but the US govt is too dumb. Look at our FAA and FCC. All of our political leaders need some regular people to inform them of their pettiness.
Uhm, as I recall on the Mythbusters show, cell phones WILL interfere if there is no shielding, but because everything is shielded there is no effect. (Right?)
lol, the republicans/democrats of today are political mudslingers with an agenda of PERSONAL gain, and not community gain..
what we realy need to do.. is ban campaigning, reduce the pay, and throw some run of the mill joe up into some of these positions rather then 274095874th generation of wealth;)
by no means take offensive to my views, i'm a fruitcake:-D
I'm living in an area where there is intermittent access. There are two broadband corporations here, RoadRunner, and Charter. Neither of which encroach in each others territory, so both of them FORCE you to buy their entire package for broadband internet.
