In Finland, my home city had a widely publicised project to start using open source software. In the end, the project was scrapped, with the only thing achieved being that MS lowered it's licensing fees somewhat.
Only a few weeks ago the City anounced it would purchase a new MS software for all of its computers.
This was probably due to proficious wining and dining on the part of MS.
"as to just say 'well, eveone's biased anyway' really doesn't seem like an acceptable attitude."
Actually, post modernist theory uses many complicated pages to explain that indeed, everyone IS biased.
Of course one could also argue, that even though a mountain looks a different shape to people standing at different angles to it, it does not mean that the mountain is shapeless or continuously reshaping.
So the point is, EVERYONE is biased, but perhaps by asking everyone to describe the mountain, we can come to some conclusion as to what its true shape is.
I agree. I am a power user, I suppose, and have had computers set up with Linux. I find certain things on Linux much better than on Windows machines, but taken as a whole and looking at the things I do everyday, Windows comes out on top.
It really isn't a case of "operating system X is crap and Z is simply wonderfull" but a case of looking at what your needs are and what system works best for you.
I do believe that Linux has the very strong potential of overcoming it's weaknesses and would in that case truly win over Windows.
However, we are not there yet so in the meanwhile, Windows will do.
Also, Windows will probably work on getting better and perhaps Apple will come closer to the proletariat equipment wise, and make it a three way match.
Actually, the US does violate human rights, but perhaps more pointedly, the US does censor the internet. People who post certain things on line, say, movies and mp3s have to pay huge fines and even go to jail.
Except it is not called repression or censorship.
I you bother to read the article, you would find out, that it is INITIALLY a $110 laptop with $10 donated, and this $10 is expected to dissapear as technology advances and production volumes increase.
The eMate had a 25mhz processor and cost $800 in 1997. It was not really very compatible, except with apple's newton PDA's.
Granted there is some similarity, but no, not really comparable.
In Finland, in a trial of a man that was convicted of the rather brutal murder of his wife and two small children, the suspect's Google searches were used as evidence in the trial. He had searched for information on suicides and various other things.
The information did not play a very big role in the trial, but was used as a gauge of his state of mind and used to prove that the deeds were premeditated.
They have beer in the USA??!?!?
News to me bubba.
