Google should stop screwing around and just bite the bullet: develop your own operating system based on Linux and get it over with. Windows Vista is down, kick them in the nuts when you can!
So should we keep flooding western countries with $1000 electronic equipment that needs to be replaced every two years (and shipping the crap to developing nations)?
Besides, these computers are about as durable as computers can get, so I don't see these being the first ones to be discarded because OLPC Vista media center edition requires a four core processeor to show HD on the 42 inch plasma screen.
If I was seeing Linux on the ClassMatePC instead of MS Windows, I might be able to believe that Intel could be motivated by charity but with Microsoft involved and how BOTH companies blasted OLPC in the press, it's all about business and their sole purpose here is to get OLPC to fail. The ClassMatePC would be pulled from the market later since cheap hardware and software is NOT what Intel or Microsoft want. IMO. The Mexican government is actually specifying a Linux operating system and Intel is providing some version of Mandrake on the machines.
I should point out though, that the OLPC software is designed to work with the hardware AND work with the user in an educational context so the Intel offering is a bit lame.
It's lame even in the cases where they are offering Windows since XP is far from a purpose designed educational software. And on the Intel offering, you probably can't install any even if you wanted since with specs like that how the hell are you going to run bloated XP programs?!
I'm really mad at wintel over this now and it makes me want to throw my wintel laptop through the window:-(
Well, it IS four times as expensive, it hasn't been designed by a bunch of educators and it isn't running open source.
I guess it's sort of like taking a school history curriculum, desgined by educators to teach kids and comparing that to learning about history by watching the History channel.
Both will work towards the same goals, but are not equal or comparable.
Even though campaigning like this is often viewed as obnoxious and the author of the article sure seemed to think so, it's motivated several big companies to clean up their act.
Case in point, Ikea, which is nowadays greener and more ethical than any number of small furniture retailers, even the mom-and-pop operations that probably sell the worst kind of child labour produced rainforest wood furniture there is.
This due to being vocal about the problems by that company and now it turns out that if you want to be an ethical shopper you have to shop at Ikea.
these days everybody seems to be facinated with running Windows CE on a small PDA screen and call it an improvemen
There are alot of PDA's out there that would be very good laptops if they just added usable keyboards to them. Somehow I just don't seem to get it I guess. What's so damn great about a large touch screen, when you could have a keyboard to go with it and it would be the perfect device for surfing, writign and communicating?!
"Personally, I think we should just cut to the chase and start growing humans specifically to harvest the organs. Why not? As long as they don't achieve consciousness, what's the harm?
We already have those. They are called motorcyclists. Emergencey response teams don't call them "organ doners" for nothing.
Well, Nintendo seems to be going for the strategy, where you get other people than your normal gaming bunch interested. The DS seems to have done this on its part, so I'm expecting some more with the Wii.
I've definetly got my money on Nintendo this time around. I mean, I see no reason why PS3 and/or X-Box won't make lots of money catering to the gaming crowd, but Nintendo will bee the one emerging victorious from under a humongous pile of money.
So when they say every child they must obviously mean every single fucking child in the whole wide world no matter what the circumstances. Yes, that must be it. Well, then my argument would be invalid now wouldn't it, and I definetly would be an idiot.
This is NOT insighful. This argument has been shot down SO many times, and every time it comes up! The fact is, these computers are going to people who DO NOT... let me repeat that DO NOT have a shortage of food or other basic needs.
What they don't have is OPPORTUNITIES and a FUTURE!
The parent's argument is based on total ignorance of the world based on CNN and the limited news that comes to the US. Most people in the world get along just fine foodwise, even people living in the theoretical "village" talked about by Negroponte. In fact, most people living in villages probably are cared for quite well.
Actually, this does not seem like the kind of excersize the story article mentions, more like a very limited event at one location, not some huge nationwide excersize.
I think consipiracy theorists are really good at reading more into a story than really is there.
This is interesting, there was this movie, I can't seem to remember the title or anything, but it was only made a few years ago. It tells the story of a successful 1950's all american family where dad is a well paid executive and mom is a happy homemaker.
Unfortunately the facade comes crashing down when the guy turns out to be gay and abandons his family, and the mother falls in love with the gardener who is black.
The movie illustrates quite well how the "good old times" were not what they were cracked up to be.
Oh, interesting factoid: the guy who strted the Islamic Jihad movement in Egypt studied to be a doctor in the States in the 1950's and his experinces led to him radicalizing. He said Americans are more interested in lawn care than the world.
What I find interesting is the term "bad guy". It seems I've been hearing this alot lately. It is like some strange code word, and when that label is applied to someone, they instantly become a target that can be killed, arrested, abused, even tortured without a guilty consciense.
For instance, in numerous television interviews, troops in Iraq talk about bad guys, cops on the street talk about them, inteligence agency agents talk about them etc.
I'm kind of worried, is this the new code word for sub human? For unexplaned threat?
Getting programs and hardware to work on Windows is a nice feature, sadly lacking from Ubuntu. Which otherwise is quite nice.
The economic sanctions of Iraq were a reason stated by Osama bin Laden for his acts of violence.
So what's your point exactly?
It's like the Cuban missile chrisis all over again, except this time it's the Americans playing crazy dangerous games with missiles.

The problem is, this isn't about competing in a free market.
Here's the 60 minutes clip: http://olpc.tv/2007/05/21/60-minutes/

Oh no! Now we won't know how newts breed in zero gravity! This is a tradgedy for science and the human spirit.
You are of course correct. Also, they think that the engine de-greaser they call wine is the best stuff in the world.

Well, if Apple did not manufacture iPods in China, those women would be tending pigs for $0 dollars per hour.
So why is this a bad thing exactly?
*rolls eyes*

I think the answer is "to run over the Iraqi children who were probably going to grow up terrorists anyway".
Drinks can be purchased from the flight attendants for near-robbery prices?

"or even serious civil disturbance (ie, Shrub gets elected for a third term)."
I'm betting with my buddies on the next prez. I've got my money on George W. Bush. The only problem is, if I win, the joke's on me!

I think when they say 6Mbps they mean 3 in one direction and 3 in the other. So all together 6.
So the asker getting 3Mbs would be about right.
No, really, I actually am this popular.
Besides, my obviously dimwitted comment was moderated as funny, what other proof do you need?
