I disagree, up until the Space phase, the game is very goal oriented. At the pond your goal is to eat enough food to divide and not be eaten. WW compared it to "a version of pac-man," albeit with upgradable abilities.

Creature phase centers around fullfilling your needs which include food, ect. until you are able to mate and then continuing to enhance your creature until you max out its brain capacity and move on to the civilization phase. I don't remember what he compared the creature phase to, but I would say it sounds a bit like the Sims (need fullfillment.)

Civilization phase has two big parts, tribal and city. Your goal is to eventually conquer your planet and develop a ufo to move onto the space phase. Tribal was compared to populas and City was compared to a simplified Sim city, though little was given on how to accomplish your goals other than "both military and diplomatic player styles" will be able to conquer this phase.

Finally, Space phase still has plenty of goals to work towards with upgrading your UFO and participating in a number of "mini-game" type senarios involving first contact, terraforming, ect. Really, it's not until space phase does it truely become a sandbox and you have the ability to revisit prior phases with all the ufo tech you've accomplished.

Well, I didn't find the slashdot article, but an older Gamespot report from Merrill Lynch JapanBelieved that it would cost $494 to produce a unit at the time it was set to debut, but they also thought it would sell for $399.

A later Gamepro reported that they would lose $300-$400 per unit if it shipped at $399 (so a loss of $0-$100 or $100-$200 with respect to which version.)

In the end, neither is a very recent article, but even if they are breaking even or making a gross gain per unit, we still have to consider the massive start up costs Sony has to cover before each PS3 unit makes a net gain.

But assuming someone is buying the PS3 for the games and is not as interested in HDMI, wouldn't it be a strong arguement to wait for more core shipments if everything else is upgradeable? Or is Sony so sure the HD quality of the PS3 is whats really going to sell it? Wait a minute. Don't answer that last question.

Is Japan's HDTV adaption rate really that much more than the US'? Am I missing something about what the $600 version offers that makes it much more interesting than the $500 besides the HDMI port?

I don't think letting our garbage pile up beneith us was doing much better at curbing our consumption either. I think that our consumption isn't the real problem; its what we do with what's left over from consuming things. No matter how little we consume, if we can't take the output and make it into new inputs, it will not be sustainable in the end. This kind of technology is a step in the right direction, its taking outputs of consumtion and making inputs of most of it again. Combined with other technologies that develope over time, it will ultimatly be the best solution to sustainability; much more so that just consuming less.

Until I hear news on the 8800 series, I'm holding off upgrading. Hopefully, I can upgrade and get my PCI-x, dual core, Directx10 and Vista also supported in one fel swoop. So far, as long as I'm moderate with the CPU and skip the on board video, its shaping up to be about 1000-1100 (minus Vista, but why subtract 0? ;) All this hinges, of course, on the 8800GT being price in line with prior releases...

Now, anyone who reads my history will know, I have no love for Sony. As much as I'd love to see them fail, I want to be honest in my posts and anaylsis. So... I am left wondering, what is the High Def tv adaption like in Europe? According to good old wikipedia High-definition television in Europe HDTV pretty much failed the first time around. It's starting to make a comeback, but it's still behind in popularity compared to other regions.

So, what I see here is Sony cutting off the leg to save the body. Less market pressure in Europe means more supply for areas that have adapted to HDTV a little more, which Sony has really pushed forward for the PS3, in hopes that a rising PS3 tide will float its blue ray boat.

What this could mean outside the gaming industry, however, is a little more breathing room for HD-DVD in Europe. I hope HD-DVD takes advantage of it; if the format wars doesn't flop, then I can only hope HD-DVD comes out on top. Now, if Sony hadn't gone with regional lockout on blue ray disks (unlike HD DVD which currently has no region coding) they could have lessened the advantage they just gave HD DVD in Europe. Instead, Region coding may hurt Blue Ray more than we might imagine.

Does this mean the PS3 is going to bomb completly? No. Will Sony collapse? If only...erm I mean, No. But is it a catastrophy that will hurt Blue ray in Europe, PS3 overall, and Sony in big time in the long run? Time will tell, but this 8-ball sees all signs pointing to Yes.

I doubt it. Hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong (I'm no hardware expert) but that change effects only the 'Reality Synthesizer' (RSX) also known as the PS3's GPU. I do recall that the previous specifications were comparable to a G70-based high-end 7800GTX 512 MB Nvidia GPU. The new Clockspeed is in line with a GeForce 6600 GT. However, we have to be careful as clockspeed alone is not what makes a GPU great. (Assuming we can trust the source) previous specifcations were compared to two GeForce 6800 Ultra, while a GeForce 6800 Ultra has a clockspeed of 400. Therefore, the GPU's clockspeed's relativity to price is questionable. Between the cost to cover the Cell processor and Blue Ray drive, I doubt this would have any impact on the price we pay (well, maybe other gamers pay) at all.
