Even more, you can pull out pretty interesting launchers with just plain bash/sh by modifying.desktop files (I found one to populate Zim Desktop Wiki's launcher with quick note support and listing all notebooks, the same could be made for other notetaking/organizing apps!). The progress bars are just lovely, there's even a nice firefox add-on to integrate download status within the launcher (even if your launcher is *heavily* customized!). I just miss a simple way to add unread message counts to Pidgin. I'll keep investigating:P
I am not as fond of the indicator API because I don't find as many practical uses myself, but when the need arrives, it'll be there for me. It can be even used with simple tools like zenity and/or yad, so it's very accessible.
A) I use Kupfer as launcher, I modified it to suit my needs so any other offering (dash) just offers less, but I find the Lens system interesting. B) I don't like the centralized menus because of my screen config. Before I got this screen, I would have used it gladly as I used to have only one big window. C) I am used to a few plasmoids in KDE I cannot live without (I really just need replacements for 3, though). D) (Nitpick) Clicking on a group doesn't maximize/minimize the whole group (something configurable in the plasmoid in that screenshot).
I installed it a week ago while still in beta, and for the first time I didn't have to solve any unexpected situation, it was smooth. I actually rushed just to get an updated GIMP version (ppa never updated that version for 11.04, and the update fixes ORA support and single-window mode) , but didn't regret it.
Also, am I the only one that doesn't hate Unity? I don't use it, but I like what I see. I even adapted my KDE desktop to be kind of compliant (except for the shared menubar, I use panoramic and I have a setup of 1 big window and 3 side windows, and it's a mess to use a fixed menubar for all). I jokingly name it Kunity: http://i.imgur.com/WvwDn.png (The taskbar is Icon Tasks, a plasmoid that implements the Unity API. For launching I don't need dash, I use Kupfer. That that thing at the corner is a Conway's life plasmoid, I am addicted to that thing).
I see myself eventually using Unity2D if I ever dump KDE (2D to avoid lag when developing GL games. Some effects are hard to see with compositing enabled, I keep it disabled in KDE). And the Unity Launcher API is very fun to play with. Made myself a nice launcher for Zim and a way to switch firefox profiles very quickly in just 5 seconds (not literally, but less than 30 min. including checking the specs and examples).
I personally do my searches on google...from another country. I directed all of my "desktop" (via helper apps) searches to google Canada. I am "officially" logged out (I guess that they can guess who I am based on IP, but at least I keep my "official" profile clean of random cruft). The searches I make from the browser are usually API calls or techie stuff like that, in which case I don't mind them being indexed.
I got fed up about this when google started suggesting stuff based on random crap my friends link to or ask me to search for them. All of their valuable datamining must make the average person seem like a three-headed chimera.
I am a game programmer and I generally prefer console games, as hammy as possible (if things explode gratuitously, bonus points)..more like arcade genres, such as shmups, beat'em-ups, platformers and fighting. Although I play roguelikes as well, if that counts as programmer games (do they?). And I don't care if it's kiddy stuff, I indulge in pokemon when I get the time. I used to like console puzzles like Tetris, Puyopuyo or Panel de Pon, but I don't see anything new on the field since that Puzzle Quest thingy.
Then again, the type of games I make are either roguelike-ish or arcade-ish, and things do explode gratuitously, so maybe there's a relation there.
In free online services datamining means "you pay with the continuous maintenance costs of a free service with your privacy". Fine, that's fair enough. With hardware it's "you pay for the 'discount' with your privacy". That is not fine, because they won't stop datamining after they recover the difference in price. They aren't going to be "OK we already got $100 from this guy, no more datamining". So they will be having access to whatever data they gather...forever. Not what you'd expect for a lower-end piece of hardware with less features. Are we selling our souls here or what?
For how long is datamining data valuable, and how much profit do they expect to get from it?
Aah, in the past, for cheaper versions of hardware you just had less features or quality. Now you get datamining on top, for good measure. The logic for free online services does not... rather, should not be applied to physical hardware you pay.
No, people with drones kill people without drones and drones with people kill people.
Because drones that kill people require people with drones that kill people. You cannot kill people with drones without drones and without people with drones operating drones to kill people.
Can I have a drone? I'll name it Buster, I already got the dronehouse in my yard.
I know as much, I enjoyed Might and Magic 2 more than any other mortal in this planet has enjoyed, but I find most western RPGs to be quite samey, as JRPGs are. The custom character systems take quite a bit from the experience since dialogue tends to be washed up to accommodate your choices. And always the same stock high fantasy races. I can only take so many "by the book" orcs and elves before getting bored of them.
And despite popular acclaim, I couldn't get into mass effect. Throw me a freaking final boss instead of a blue human-sized thingy that shots lasers and clings to walls. That's "first boss" quality there, not final boss.
It's not like there are so many new JRPGs nowadays, so I don't get why so much hate towards them, when there are no targets for such hate other than several-year-old examples.
Because monitoring every move of a kid can not backfire in any conceivable way. Right... Isn't this whole tracking people thing going a bit too far already?
Hmm. No. I have disabled the checks for that string, of course. The failing is because of random internal changes, and makes certain extensions fail if they use the deprecated or changed internals (I don't know if the word API is proper use in this case?)
The problem is that many medics will over-prescribe such drugs. I was diagnosed a pretty strong drug for sleeping, and it wasn't only useless, it severely crippled me during the day, and it was addictive as fuck. The abstinence syndrome was brutal. They tried to give me the same substance with another name after I complained, and they attempted to give it again with yet another name a few months ago for "stress issues". No thanks.
Birds have been proven (by SCIENCE no less) to be fairly intelligent animals, totally not honoring that silly "bird brain" nonsense. Is this surprising to anyone with a minimum of interest in ornithology?
I always wondered, how do lie detectors separate liars from awkward people? I know a lot of people with low confidence (including myself) that gets very nervous when talking to some people. I would assume even more nervous when being monitored or tested actively.
How do operators of such devices define the proper thresholds for every individual?
You are joking, but I fear this is the actual reason. People are somehow enchanted with Mars and will never let go until they find something.
I quote "but there is a price that you have to pay if you want the toys."
Ahem. ...
THOSE TOYS ARE NOT FREE! You have to pay for them to obtain them, it's not like google services or facebook that are "paid" with your user data.
Yes, just updating your packages should leave you in a "release" status.

I mentioned my reasons, but to summarize:
A) I use Kupfer as launcher, I modified it to suit my needs so any other offering (dash) just offers less, but I find the Lens system interesting.
B) I don't like the centralized menus because of my screen config. Before I got this screen, I would have used it gladly as I used to have only one big window.

That's all, really. Everything else is either fine or good to me. The eyecandy is really nice as well, even in 2D (it does a great exposé/present effect without compositing enabled!). A bit more polish and a few options (or config dialog) and I am sold.

...but this is just sad. This guy did stuff I care about.
Godspeed.
How is this anime? Because of the big eyes? I see no other reason to call it "anime robot girl". Could be an owl girl for all I can see.
This is definitely not Valsione-R. It's even worse than a Fairlion. (super robot wars fans, any here?)
I have been using Virtualbox for years and never had any of those issues. This is the first notice I have about it not being just awesome.

Since I didn't explain myself too well there...

I moved to the roguelike genre, which is very alive, even if they are still stuck with the same boring high fantasy clichés the western RPGer is so fond of.
I see no taskbar in that video...you need to zoom out to pick up windows in the same workspace?
I know as much, I enjoyed Might and Magic 2 more than any other mortal in this planet has enjoyed, but I find most western RPGs to be quite samey, as JRPGs are. Ah, the ubiquitous JRPG hate.
The only thing is that we changed a series of Japanese clichés for a series of American-European clichés, that we will get bored of in a few years, and then we'll say "western rpgs are all the same".
Because monitoring every move of a kid can not backfire in any conceivable way. Right...

Extensions stop working at random without any good reason and in record time. So many of us use Firefox over Chrome because of extensions.
This plan is just terrible.

Oh man that sucks. Airport sec or something like that?
