  1. netsol on Ask Slashdot: Advice For Domain Name Registration? · · Score: 1

I've used many, but have had a domain registered with Network Solutions for 15 years. I've never had any issues with them, and have complete control over my DNS settings. However with others, sometimes I do not. EuropeRegistry for example, does not allow you to add TXT headers properly, and their documentation is a little sub-par.

Wow, seems like yesterday man. I don't normally post here, but I read /. at least every day. You helped shape the mindset of a generation of geeks, for which I am eternally thankful. Best of luck in the future, Rob.

  4. Re:US-only problem? on Ask Slashdot: CS Degree Without Gen-Ed Requirements? · · Score: 2

Yes, but also here in Germany most employers won't take your application seriously unless you have a CS degree. That typically means a masters degree too. I find the whole idea bloody annoying to be honest. It makes it very hard for very experienced foreigners living here to get a job.

  5. Re:Battery availability might be a concern. on Recycling an Android Phone As a Handheld GPS? · · Score: 1

Yeah, GPS works fine in airplane mode. However, it uses a lot of power, and I think that also applies when the screen is turned off. His dad would have to return to the home screen and then lock the phone in order to store it, and then both turn it on and re-activate the maps program to use it. That might be a little cumbersome.
All depends on how the GPS works on the particular version of Android you have I think.

The thing I never got is just who the hell Jon Katz actually was? Was he famous for something? Did he invent something? Or was he just some troll that somehoe managed to post crap (and it WAS crap) on Slashdot ? I'm sure I can find him on Wikipedia... but it almost makes it more fun this way!

  7. Re:Awkward Article on Cancer Survival for Software Developers · · Score: 1

I don't think that in my life that I have ever been offended by anything, but the editor who put this on Slashdot is getting pretty close to being the first to do so.

Hear hear. I too was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. I had treatment and am now undergoing regular observation to check that it has gone.
I found this article insulting and fucking irritating. My world came crashing down around my eyes when it happened, and my ONLY concern was getting better and being with my family.
