etree.org doesn't really deserve any credit form Phish's standpoint, excepting that it brings people together to share their music. There are many other organizations which provide the same thing. Should they all be credited. I think not. But you bitch about nothing with the best of 'em. Congrats.
I didn't read anything about analysis of how the kids made the interface do what they wanted. How did their brains interpret seeing a monitor? What happened when they discovered that by touching it the picutre would change? How did they correlate this to tasks?
I'd love to see some analsyes of the very early input queues. Before the click metaphor was learned.
At what point does the cost of broadband become greater than the cost of using the mail to exchange data?
Before the days of broadband, I routinely mailed many GB of music around using CDR and CDRW. For about $3 I could ship someone a dozen disks. For $45 bucks a month, the cost of my Road Runner connection, I could ship several hundred disks. As the storage capacity of disks grows, these costs go down.
If bandwidth costs more than the mail, is it really worth it?
The only problem I see is that companies tend to pass along cost increases to consumers. Especially when nobody is allowed to compete on cost, as there is only one version of a copyrighted work.
Seems like old books and movies would become ever more expensive.

This integration will include checking the posted files against the md5 signatures in the database. This will make it close to impossible for people to post files that are illicit.

Would you rather the company pay taxes on the money they are going to give you then have you be taxed on that income, or have the shares prices rise then you just pay taxes on the capital gain? Is it moral to "avoid" taxes in this fashion? I don't know. But I certainly wouldn't want companies not to be able to write off my salary as a portion of their cost of goods sold.
If it is illegal then why do most large companies maintain multi billion dollar publicly announced buyback programs? If you go to Yahoo financial news and do a search on buyback you will see dozens of announcements just this week.
Could you explain when and when not this pactice is illegal? I'd love to know. Do they just have to say it's not to avoid income taxes?
My understanding is that dividends are taxed twice. Once as income for the company, then again as income for you.
It is more tax efficient for MSFT to take that cash and do stock buybacks. These program reduce the outstanding shares, increasing the earnings per share and hopefully the stock price. The investor realizes the income as a capital gain instead of a dividend.
Then why don't they change the banner. Because this is obviously only something that would matter to that type of person. Honestly, I don't remember such insignificant anti-ms stories before the linux bubble burst.
Here's my question. Assume that the publicly funded research eventually leads to reactors which can power our appliances. Is it at this point that companies step in and start making profits, or should they wait until the public builds the reactors for them?
Free market? Like the present airline bailout, right? Where we give for profit companies cash and loan guarantees equal to nearly twice what said companies ARE WORTH in our free market; so that they can continue making profits.
Or the public provides huge grants to gollege researchers so that the universities can build the ip portfolios?
