    Well, writing compliant html/css might take some time if you without thinking write "cursor: hand;" in your css. On the other hand, if you're used to the standards, you know that it's "cursor: pointer;".

    Forgive the kind of random example, but you didn't give any example of what takes long to write while adhering to standards.

    Well, when I browse that news site, a temporary copy of their image is stored in my browser cache. If I have a worm, that means I might have distributed a copy of that image, albeit unknowingly.

    As I understand QoS routers, they should be able to prioritize traffic in such a way that browsing stays responsive while p2p is only minimally slower. And as I understand the OP, the question was "what is the best way to do this". I clicked on the "read more" button because I, too, wonder about this.

    In typical Slashdot fashion, half the answers (including yours) have been "You're an idiot. I understand your problem much better than you". Thanks a lot for being so helpful.

    I would suggest statical linking. You can link only against the needed parts of Qt (for example, no XML, WebKit, Phonon and SQL, but GUI and networking), so the result should be better than other crossplatform alternatives.

    No, the patch is to make sure that the identity of the image can't be established by a computer, even if all images were tagged manually beforehand.

    This can be done by making sure that URLs vary for every request, and by ensuring that the image data is different for every request. To accompish this, use simple color substitution (that is not noticeable to humans), cropping, or simple artifacts like lines in the edges. The URL can be made to vary by using a random number, and only remembering what real ID that number maps to for say 10 minutes (and don't allow mappings to be used from several IP adresses of course).

    If fiber is public, then why involve private companies at all? They will demand profit, and this will increase costs for consumers.

    If all fiber is public, all ISPs will have to rent fiber and bandwith from the state/municipality/whatever. So why the middle man? That will only raise prices for the consumer.

    Well, the move to qt4 was the perfect opportunity to bring change, all the apps had to do a rewrite anyway.
    And the KDE4.0 release _is_ stable, for the core libraries. As the developers have said again and again.

    I recall actually waiting for Windows 2000 and XP with interest and anticipation. Those products fit their install image into 300 MB of space and packed new features by the hundreds. What happened to that?

    have you figured out how to compile a program (even Hello World) and statically link it against a Free implementation of the C++ standard library so that the executable is smaller than 200 KiB?

    That would be uClibc++. No locales, but most other parts of c++. According to the webpage the library is about 76kb in an optimised build.
