Sun wants 64 bit capability to be a differentiator for Solaris. So they will not rush to use AMD's 64 bit offerings.
OTOH who is going to try to make a go of AMD/64? For sure not any of the system vendors who have commited to IA64. That means no Dell, no IBM, no HP. So there is an opportunity for Sun.
This is the best java book I have read. I swear I already knew 80% of what is in the book but I had forgotten half.
But the most useful thing about the book is that you can quote it to people. It has been a useful tool for applying to the Open Source mailing list I have to participate in.
And if you are writing an API in Java you need this book shipped to you overnight delivery. You can thank me later.
Presumably this technology does speech->text->animated model Wouldn't it be simpler to present the text to the user? I would have thought text->human is much higher bandwidth than animated-model->human.
I will completely abandon Windows when I have outgrown computer games
You will then never abandon Windows. The trouble is you never grow out of playing games. Like with music you now don't have to give up games when you turn 30... 40...
It looks like the cpu is in the base of the monitor. When the CPU is outdated, can I use the screen with another computer? If I can't then it doesn't seem very evironment-friendly.
Are Transmeta microprocessors manufactured in a particularly environment friendly way?
Why is everyone so surprised that Jagger and co. are interested in business? After all don't rock stars want to be "*Rich* and Famous". And like most things in life it helps to be talented *and* hardworking.
There was a cool profile of Puff Daddy in a recent New Yorker in which it was revealed that he spends more time at the office than in clubs. But no one ever made it in the hip hop world by shouting about how they are a suburban catholic school educated grind.
Guests at a wedding take lots of photographs, but they are all the same. You get a million shots of the couple cutting the cake, but not many of Aunt May together with Uncle Bruce. As the article says the wedding photographer also composes shots that other people copy.
The other thing is: never hire a friend to take your wedding photographs. Your friends are there to enjoy themselves. One of my friends hired another friend to take the wedding photos. Something went wrong and the photos were never delivered. Those old friends are still not talking. Don't be cheap, hire a pro!
This is an example of a badly design security process. It isn't actually making anything more secure. There is a nice piece in the Atlantic: http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2002/ 09/mann.htm
Patrick Naughton was doing something wrong, but he did not 'rape children'. He was caught by a sting and made a plea bargain. It looks like he did serve some time in 'home detention'. In our great American system he has the right to do this. I bet he has leaned his lesson. I bet he also realizes what a loser he was to even think about the sort of crime he committed.
I am glad the FBI has someone smart working for them that can help catch the real pedophiles.
The sort of hysteria spouted by the original poster does not help.

I wonder how the changing characters in Narnia will affect the franchise
All movie studios want to create a franchise. It enables them to make a boatload of money. People will go and see any old Batman crap they serve up because they're hoping that each will be as good as the first.
So one problem with the Narnia books is that there are different characters in the books as the series progresses.
Another problem to be smoothed over is the Christian allegory. Even as an 11 year old I found 'The Last battle' a bit hard to take.
Why are influential albums reissued as double CDs? Could it be anything to do with money? We just had 'The Velvet Underground and Nico' released as a double CD so that you can listen to the mono version of the album, or the stereo. Also annoying was the 'Live at Leeds' debacle: First there was a version for CD, then a version with extra tracks (the remaster), then a deluxe double CD version.
Having said that ZSatSFM is a great album. And actually the single version CD seems to be still available.
Oh yeah, and anti-social mobile phone users could be punished with an electric shock if prototypes from a design company go into production

Consumers in both Europe and Japan currently purchase such content with minimal complaint
What are you talking about? What copy protected content do European consumers purchase? DVDs maybe but I heard they were available in the US too.
America will actually desire the copy protection if they are told it will lead to better sound and picture quality
So everyone will believe what they are told? Clearly there is no technical relation between better sound and picture quality and DRM.
Granted, he was working within the industry
And you believed what you were told.

I love slashdot but the weakest part of it is the selection of stories. I wish the editors could be more discriminating.

My daughter (now 6) loves Totoro and Kiki.
Can I take her to see Spirited Away? Or will it be too scary?
