  1. Re:Community college, anyone? on All-You-Can-Eat College For $99-a-Month · · Score: 3, Informative

$20/unit for in state tuition at a community college in California (Where I live). Out of state tuition is currently about $185/unit or $200/unit depending on if you are doing summer classes or other.

    Books should average about $250/semester

    http://www.cos.edu/view_page.asp?nodeid=2822&parentid=2864&moduleid=1

This information is according to the College of the Siskiyous website (Where I went to community college 8 years ago).

Assuming you take 15 units/semester which is what you need to graduate with an associates in 2 years or a bachelors in 4 years that comes out to (approximately):

($20 per unit x 15 units) + $250 books = $550/semester or $1100/year + misc expenses for in state students (subsidized by the state of California)
    or
($185 per unit x 15 units) + $250 books =3025 $/semester or $6050/year + misc expenses for out of state students (un-subsidized by the state of California)

This comes out to $275/month for in state students or $756/month for out of state students (8 month school year)

We have an appliance called KBox made by Kace http://www.kace.com/ We push out an agent to all the computers and they check in periodically. They then upload information such as their IP address which allows us to see where they are. But you do have a valid point. If you dont have an appliance like they kbox you might want to put the location in the name.

  3. Nameing convention I use on Suitable Naming Conventions For Workstations? · · Score: 1

We name the computers as follows: -Asset Tag number We have an asset tracking system where we keep track of all our equipment. In that system we keep track of when it was purchased, when the warranty will expire, etc.... We name each image with a name that says some thing about what image it is such as XP2 or XP3 or our latest one we called it DM5 for the version of our document management system. So if we have an HP dc7700 computer with the DM5 image and an asset tag of 12345 the computer name would be DC7700DM5-12345 So we can easily look at it in AD and see what model and computer image is on that computer, and if we want to know more about the hardware we look up 12345 in the asset tracker.

We have had some performance problems for the remote locations, but it is still usable. I did a search for open source document management systems on Google and there are a ton out there if you don't feel like paying for something.

  12. The phone subsidy is a reason for the contract on iPhone Users Angry Over AT&T Upgrade Policy · · Score: 1

Apple is the one charging $500 for the Iphone. ATT then gives you a $200 subsidy to buy it as an incentive to sign a 2 year contract. If AT&T were to let people upgrade their phone at the subsidized cost anytime they wanted to, they could stand to loose a lot of money. I agree with AT&T on this one. Check out what the Early Termination Fee(ETF) is...I would bet it is less than $200. You could always pay the ETF, then get your iphone at the subsidized cost.

I can see a few reasons for Amtrak's failures:
    1. They are always late: I have ridden Amtrak numerous times, and I am yet to ride it, or pick someone up who was riding it where it wasn't at least 15 minutes late (usually much later).
    2. It is slow: I looked into taking a trip from California to Texas on Amtrak...it would have taken 3 days, same amount of time as driving.
    3. Cost: It costs more than flying in a lot of cases.

A high speed train has the potential of alleviating 2 of the 3 failures I see from Amtrak...and if enough people use it, it could be cheaper than flying.

I know it probably won't be any faster than flying, but once you factor in getting to the airport early, dealing with security, baggage claim, etc... who knows. Assuming the two would take the same amount of time, and be the same price, I would totally choose rail. Whoever designs/plans the system just has to make sure to make the cost of rail/speed of rail competitive with flying.

In regards to Rail not going everywhere people want to go, maybe we should start using it to connect the major airports. This would make parking available for the people taking the train (Reduce the cost of implementation), and give an alternative to canceled flights....or give an alternative to the trains being stopped for whatever reason.
